I can't shut if off.

Bakás: Limampung Taon ng Malikhaing Paglilimbag (Fifty Years of Printmaking)
26 November, Thursday,5 pm
Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery), 3/F
Cultural Center of the Philippines
to be preceded by the launching of the book Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. Into the Threshold at 4pm at the same venue
Presented by the Philippine Association of Printmakers in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts
BAKÁS Traces the Path of Philippine Contemporary Printmaking
The Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) celebrates its 40th Anniversary with Bakás: Limampung Taon ng Malikhaing Paglilimbag (Fifty Years of Printmaking) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The exhibit opens on 26 November, Thursday, 5 pm at the Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery), 3/F Main Theater Building.
The art of fine printmaking has drawn the interest of local artists since the 1950s. But it was not until the 1960s that training was made available to young artists through the efforts of Manuel Rodriguez Sr. In 1969, the PAP was formed with most of his students and himself as founding members.
Printmaking may not attract as many followers as the art of painting but it continues to sustain a constant group of committed practitioners and advocates who have established their reputation in this fine art medium. Through workshops and lectures, PAP members have encouraged veteran and young artists to explore printmaking using traditional and experimental methods. Current PAP officers conceived of this anniversary event to give recognition to artists within and outside the PAP who have supported and promoted its cause.
The exhibit begins with a brief historical overview marking highlights in printmaking practice and the growth of the PAP. The main part focuses on the different printmaking techniques done in the four basic printing methods namely serigraphy, relief, intaglio, and planographic process. In each section works by artists across decades will reveal the range of styles and creativity that can be achieved through technical variations and experimentations.
Selected works from the CCP print collection serves as the core of the exhibition. By itself, it is already a significant gathering of works. Other works are loaned from artists, institutional and private collections. Featured works include those by national artists Vicente Manansala, Cesar Legaspi, Jerry Elizalde Navarro, Arturo Luz and Bencab, and past PAP officials Adiel Arevalo, Ivy Avellana-Cosio, Brenda Fajardo, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Romulo Olazo, Pandy Aviado, Fil dela Cruz, and Raul Isidro. The exhibit will also feature artists who are not strictly practitioners in this art form but have incorporated printmaking techniques and concepts with different mediums, e.g., painting and sculpture, thus creating hybrid and mixed media works. These include Roberto Chabet, Gerry Tan, Raymundo Albano, and Fernando Modesto. Altogether, the exhibit will feature over eighty artists representing different periods, generations, and styles.
The opening will be preceded by the book launch of Manuel Rodiguez, Sr.: Into the Threshold at 4 pm in the same venue. Mr. Rodriguez will be among the honored guests during the opening event. This exhibit is organized in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Bakás: Fifty Years of Printmaking will be on view until 30 January 2010.

Chastity Covers, Phallic Implements, and the Boxer Codex by Ambeth Ocampo
The complete story of the Philippines and the Filipinos remains to be written. Since it is a long and complex story that depends on written records, how do we tackle pre-history? Jose Rizal took up the challenge when he annotated Antonio de Morga's "Sucesos de las islas Filipinas" (1609) and published a new edition in 1890 because he believed that "to know the destiny of a nation, one has to open the book of her past".
Today we have clues into Philippine pre-history from archeological artifacts supplemented by our earliest written records. In an illustrated lecture Ambeth Ocampo will introduce the collections of the Ayala Museum to explore how and why our past has been re-presented in the continuing search for that elusive thing we call national identity.
Ambeth Ocampo writes a widely-read editorial page column on history for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and teaches at the Ateneo de Manila University. His research interests cover 19th Century Philippines, the Philippine Revolution, Philippine art, food, and culture. He served as Chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (2005-2007) and is currently the chairman of the National Historical Institute.
The lecture will be held on November 28 at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Lobby. The same lecture will be delivered twice: one at 1030AM and anther at 130PM. Participation in the lecture is Php230 for students and Ayala Museum members and Php300 for regular adults. The price includes admission to all galleries of the museum.

The Museum Foundation of the Philippines is pleased
to announce a not-to-be-missed series of lectures on Philippine culture
and politics leading up to the May 2010 elections entitled "Politics: Pinoy Style."
In cooperation with Yuchengco Museum, the lecture series will kick off with the lecture of:
Prof. Michael L. Tan
Anthropologist and "Pinoy Kasi" columnist
Philippine elections: behind the guns, goons, gold and glitter,
Prof. Tan will reexamine the 4G's and propose a deeper analysis of how
we are trying to build democracy in a feudal society, which means there
are constant negotiations around privilege and power. Elections are a
time when the common tao can negotiate and navigate, even if in a
limited way. The MFPI and other concerned groups have an obligation to
help create more space for that negotiation and navigation.
This will be on Wednesday, Nov 11, 2009 at 6:30 pm at 4th Floor
Upper Wing Gallery of Yuchengco Museum, RCBC Plaza, corner Ayala &
Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati City. Please do come and also join
our MFPI Fellowship that will follow right after the lecture.

Perhaps It Was Possibly Because

Not the heads of two strangers whose tops touch each other at a diner, but the neck of a bottle of ketchup jutting out of the counter.
Not the spectacle of specks from fireworks in the dark, but the specter of a window that seems not so much an opening into the structure of a building but into the structure of night.
Not the thicket thickening the photographic field, but the image of a bicycle wheel cropped not only by the dominating foliage its upper border of people but by the edge of the photograph itself.

Being forward thinkers, jewelry artists Michelline Syjuco, Kristine Dee and Paul Syjuco discussed the theme of futurism and came up with several concepts. For them it meant progress with a deep-seated respect for the past. It meant concern for the common good by doing things a little bit better along the way. It also meant, most importantly, creating new things with imagination and creativity.
The different design eras and paradigms expressed the future in different ways. The early twenties to forties envisioned the future rife with airplanes and flight as well as abstraction. Mid-century futurism contained visions of monorails and superhighways. There seemed to be a fixation with organic alien life forms, lasers, UFOs and space exploration in the sixties and seventies as well as parallel universes of mythical beings and objects in the eighties. However, these "Retro-futurist" pegs aren't exactly what the artists pay tribute to. It is the constant attempt to experiment. It is the pushing of the mind to create concepts of external objects not present to the senses. And while we all know that most concepts of the past didn't quite make the cut, being relegated to archives at best, it is the spirit of creativity and resourcefulness that is held high. After all, a lot of our perceived realities now were long ago only considered fantasies.

Habi, the Philippine Textile Council, has arranged for Dr. Norma Respicio, leading textile expert, to talk on embarking on indigenous textiles research on Saturday, October 24, 3pm at the Yuchengco Museum's Masters Gallery. An exhibition of rare home-grown fabrics from private collectors will open simultaneously with the bazaar. A minimal fee of Php50 entitles the visitor to the bazaar and free admission to the museum and lecture.
Originally slated to open October 9 & 10, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is a joint undertaking of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), the Yuchengco Museum and the Lopez Memorial Museum in celebration of Museum Month this October. It also celebrates the United Nations proclamation of 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers. Likhang Habi is an offshoot of Market Encounter initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium held last February at the National Museum. Museum and Galleries month is celebrated annually in October. In line with this, the National Museum is organizing a lecture entitled "Heritage: Makakain Ba Yan?" with Mr. Eric B. Zerrudo, Director of Metropolitan Museum, as guest speaker.
The lecture that tackles the importance of valuing and giving value to our heritage has been well-received by the locals of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Laoag in Ilocos Norte, and other fora. As we saw the significance of this topic to cultural workers, we are inviting you to listen to this enlightening lecture on the first day of October 2009 at 10:00 in the morning at the Ablaza Hall, 2nd floor, National Art Gallery.
For confirmation and details, please contact Ms. Rizza S. Salterio of the Museum Education Division at telefax (02) 527 0278 or email us at museum.education.nm@....

Christina Dy will be showing Roots, new commissioned portraits of her signature charcoal hair series, at SLab's 20Square Gallery from Wednesday, 23 September to Saturday, 17 October, 2009 from 6-9pm.
CD started hair drawings four years ago as abstracted portraits. Drawn in a subtractive process, CD shades the entire field in charcoal black and simultaneously draws with an eraser and fills in details with graphite. The tangible and tactile becoming more so evident as the highlights are erased in. She starts with photographing her sitter's hair, then scaling up the images and abstracting them completely. They are anonymous, but present very intimate clues as to the identity of the subjects. How the curls fall or the waves turn, the angles of a widow's peak, or the twists of a crown puyo-these are individual and unique landscape markers of our crowns. Hair is our expression of identity, a carrier of our DNA, an organic marker of every person's individuality. One of the commissioned pieces is her self-portrait. The artist offers new possibilities of portraiture.
This 2009, Christina Dy received the CCP 13 Artist Award and shortlisted for the second time as a finalist for the Ateneo Art Awards.
