Imposition of ban on student politics is now a days a popular demand among the
rising urban-based middle class, especially whose are residing in well developed
countries. This demand got its momentum after killing of a 2nd. Year student of
BUET, named Sony, who was a victim of tender baji.

Stop Student politics was first raised by the then Governor Monaem Khan and
tried to shift Dhaka University from its original location to Saver. Due to
student protest Monaem Khan had to abandon the idea of shifting of Dhaka
University and decided to establish a new university. By this way Jahangir Nagar
University was established. A student organization called NSF was formed with
the then East Pakistan government money to disrupt student movement of that
time.

After occurrence of 1975, at the time of starting student agitation against army
rule of Zia, students were bribed with money and arms. Ershad took over power
and tried to mould student politics in his favor with money. But he did not
succeed. During Ershad time the rising urban middle class again raised demand of
ban on student politics. At that time it was told that the students were more
engaged in politics then studies which are their prime duty, University
examinations could not be held in time and sessions were got tangled and 7 to 8
years were being required to complete 4 years course, so student politics to be
stopped. The reasons stated above were resolved by establishing private
universities. This means we intentionally convert education into commodity. A
selected group of people can afford to send their children to these
universities.

Out of total only 5 to 10 % student can bear expenses of government subsidized
universities, medical and engineering colleges. And a small section of that
student is being successful to get admitted into universities, medical and
engineering colleges. Our big political parties as their arm cadres are using a
microscopic section of these students. It was seen in different occasions that
the majority student of JCD or BCL student wing of BNP or AL respectively are
against tender baji but they can’t always open their mouth for fear of arms or
loosing their seats in hall.

Our Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Dictator of BNP, stated in Parliament that she
is willing to impose ban on student politics. This means that if AL agrees then
student politics will be banned. So ball is now in AL coat. We do not yet know
the reaction of that party. Tender baji, a method of bribing student, was
creation of BNP and still they are continuing that activities. AL successfully
practiced that tradition during their tenure of power. At present no one can get
tender unless he is a party man. Tender baji is fighting of two groups of
political party in power under the umbrella of student politics. Now who is to
be blamed: (1) the ruling party who pokes its ugly noses into student politics
or (2) the victim, student politics.

We, the rising urban-based middle class, are afraid of student because they may
go against our self-interest characteristics. Therefore we could not appreciate
BUET student Mumu’s protest against razakers’ coming in power and could not
collect signature in favor of her and against ruling party’s student mastans
(later on these people were evolved in tender baji and Sony’s killing) who
declared Mumu’s presence in BUET unwanted. We could not also collect signatures
to protest against closing of Adamjee Jute Mill, the biggest jute mill of Asia
and did not care for 50,000 workers who lost their job due to the act of Adamjee
closing. The ruling party forced 2,50,000 (@ 5 persons/family/worker) people to
starve but we are mum because these people do not belong to our class.

Are we sure that imposition of ban on student politics will stop tender baji?
This act may create hurdle for student politics but I am sure it will not stop
tender baji or killing of student.
