Rangpur is a quite town in North Bengal, an ancient city having glorious past. It was the part of ancient kingdom of 'PragJyotishPur' and also of Kamarupa. During Husain Shahi dynasty it came under great Husain Shahi rule. The land was abode of three great ethnical people Hindu Kshatriyas, Muslims, and Shaivaite[worshpers of Lord Shiva] Kochas ( Kuchbehara - means abode of Kochas) living side by side in a peaceful congenial atmosphere from the time immemorial. Each group of those people had their hay days in the region- each ethnic/religious group in some stage of history ruled the land and extended their supremacy.

Islampur is an important locality in the town. Within this locality lies a small Mihama known as Hunumantola (home of the Hunumanas, the great followers Lord Rama). In here lives a poor family consisting of mother and a female child of age 8-9 years. No body of the mahalla could think that their little mahalla would find place in National Dailies. The credit goes to the Imam of Islampur Jame Masjid and a local Jamat Leader Abdul Malek. However the local people could not take pride for the reason Hunimantola made the news, rather they are ashamed of it.

It is alleged that the said Abdul Malek committed a sexual assault on the minor girl on 19^th May at about 11 a.m.

Girls mother lodged a complain at the Kotwali police station on 25^th May. The girl was produced before a first class magistrate who recorded the statement of the girl on 28^th May. [p1]

According to the mother of the victim-child some local influential people advised them not to file any case on the plea that they would settle the matter amicably through discussion. But nothing happened. Under the circumstances the mother lodged a complain to the Kotwali Police station. However the police have not yet arrested the Jamat leader. It is further learnt that an influential businessman of the locality is giving protection to the rapist.
