Rajufa Episode Part 4: An Appeal for help by her parents
-Ajoy Roy
Remember the poor 7-year girl of village Konda under Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi, a victim of gang rape. Her name is Rajufa. She is still fighting for her life. She is now in psychologically imbalance condition following the barbarous act committed on her person by a group of gangsters, the golden boys of the Part in power.
She needs better treatment both physical as well as psychiatric. The treatments would need a good amount of sum, which obviously the poor helpless parents can't afford. Therefore, the parents of ill-fated girl have appealed on 17th April by an open letter to the kind-hearted people for helping their daughter for better medical treatment. It may be recalled that the girl was gang rapped by a group of goondas allegedly belonging to local Yuba Dal on 21st March night. The Bengali daily "Sangbad" published the contents of those letters with a caption:
"Father Mother of Raped Child Victim Appealed for Help"
The appeal-letters read as follows:
" To the kind hearted people we make this appeal that we are very poor and day labourers and helpless parents of the victim. We appeal to you for helping us for better treatment of our ill-fated 7-year old daughter. Our poor and innocent daughter has been the victim of political revenge; the crime has been done by a group of local hooligans (name not disclosed). They raped our daughter on 21st March night. They not only raped the girl but cut her private part with a sharp knife causing severe multiple injuries. We do not know what fate is waiting her as she has been exposed to not only physical pain but to psychological agony . ....
We feel that we should take our daughter to Dhaka for a better medical treatment. For this we need large sum which we can not afford to bear, being a day labourer couple. We therefore appeal to you to kindly extend your helping hand."
Latest position:
So long she has been under the care of Rajshahi medical college hospital and receiving conventional treatment. There has been some complication regarding the medical report of raping- as the medical examination need to be done within a week. But as she has been moved from one place to another for treatment- main attention was focused to save her life rather than search for sperm in the vaginal channel.
As she was not improving, it was felt that she should receive better medical facilities.
Finally, BRCT ( Bangladesh Rehabilitation Centre Trauma) unit of Rajshahi on their own initiative brought her to Dhaka Medical college Hospital. She was admitted at "One Stop Crisis Centre" (OSCC ) of Dhaka Medical College unit on Monday (23rd April). I visited her in the after noon at DMCH.
Summary of the episode:
The readers who did not follow the event, here is the brief account of the event.
She, a student of class III, hailed from village Konda under Bagmara Upazila in Rajshahi. Her parents are Rajab Ali and Nekjahan. On 21st March, dead at night 4-5 hooligans forcibly entered the room where she and elder brother Sohel (9) used to sleep. After entering the miscreants pushed a piece of clothing onto her mouth. As Sohel got alert, they threatened him with a knife to keep quiet. Cut her pyjama with a sharp knife; and it is alleged they used the knife to widen the vaginal channel and then forcibly they satisfied their beastly demand, and hurriedly left the place. Hearing the cry of the boy Shoel, parents wake up. They found their daughter unconscious with blood stained cloths, still profusely bleeding.
In the morning they took her to a local village doctor who treated her for 3-days without noticeable improvement. She was then admitted in a private clinic at Rajshahi. She was then taken back home after another 3-days as her parents could not bear the cost. But condition of Rajufa continued deteriorating. Then she was admitted to Rajshahi medical college. Since then she was there till she was brought to Dhaka on 23rd April. On 25th April the Daily Sangbad made a report on this issue again with the caption:
"Child Rajufa now at Hospital, Lost Mental equilibrium"
The police arrested four youths, all belonging to BNP cadres, Ashraful, Israfil, Rahim, Moke and Shantu in connection of the case.
Many sympathizers went to see the Rajufa yesterday including Justice KM Sobhan, Dr. Harun Ar Rashid, Dr Arefin Siddique, Maleka Begum, and Mrs. Ayesha Khanam. They all demanded exemplary punishments to the culprits.
