Proshika Episode 3: Omar Tarek Chaudhury and Ajharul Haque Set Free
- Ajoy Roy
Today (02. 04. 02) the High court declared the detention order of Khaleda government under section 54 served onto two Proshika employees Mr. Omar Tarek Choudhury, Deputy Director, and Messenger peon Mr. Ajharul Haque. The high court ordered to set free two detained persons immediately if there are no other cases against them. The High Court bench constituted of Justice Md. Hamidul Haque and Justice Najmun Ara Sultana on Tuesday, 2nd April issued the release order after hearing two separate writs petitions filed in favour of Mr. Choudhury and Haque. Advocate Zahirul Haque argued in favour of the petitioners, on the other hand Government case was pleaded by assistant attorney generals Zaman Akhter and Quamrunnesa Ratna.
It may be mentioned here that Mr. Chaudhury and Haque were arrested by the police under section 54 on 11-12 March. Then they were served with one month's detention order and sent to Dhaka Central jail. Later on two separate writ petitions were submitted to the high court. The high court then issued a show cause notice to the authority concerned to the effect why the detention order would not be declared illegal on 16th March. [for details see my two earlier posting to Mukto-mona: Proshika Episode 1 2 ]. On 18th March they were granted bail by the lower court in a case filed under 54 section.
At last Mr. Omar Tarek Chaudhury and Ajharul Haque were released from the Dhaka Central jail yesterday ( 3rd April, 2002) at about 8 p.m. following the Dhaka High Court order to Government issued on Tuesday (2nd April) to set them free immediately.
We rejoice their freedom but vow to continue long drawn fight against the crimes committed against humanity and human values.
