Dear Shangeites Friends,
I only objected the frank anti-man sexism in the quoted poem of Shange. I
did not deny anywhere that there are oppressions against women. I did not
deny that we must fight against it. But one does not need to think like
Shange did. This is definitely not needed for the "fight for your rights,
women."
Of course there are, and there must be many many cases where a wife must
revolt against the oppression from her husband and break the family, or even
have to take up arms against him or them. Yet, a sane woman would not think
like that of Shange about ALL THE the men around her. It would be very
unfortunate if this kind of sick thinking leads to personal and familial
unhappiness.
The direction of the swing in the poem is all right. But it way passed the
healthy balance in the middle. I would never think of justifying murdering
one's partner, no matter husband or wife, for the reason that she/he was a
battered spouse. A It is frank sickness. Please help Ms. Shange. Take her
to a therapist. Murdering her boy-friend, even if she were battered, will
neither help her self, nor the cause of feminism.
Please also note the facts about spousal battering that I mentioned in my
last letter; particularly the fact that lesbians also batter their partners
with equal frequency.
Thanks
