Some books are unfortunate. Although they are inanimate objects, because of
their contents they provoke anger of the states, institutions, religious sects,
and even individuals. They are banned, burnt, and boycotted. Even their authors,
publishers, sponsors, sellers, translators, and even the readers are not spared.
It has been reported that the great library of Alexandria was burnt three times.
Indian ancient sage Manu professed that all books except the Vedas were wrong.
Brahmin/Kshatriya rules in India used to burn books by Charvaka. Salman Rushdie,
Taslima Nasrin , etc. are the latest victims.
Why to blame only Vivekananda and Khomeini? What about progressive writers
like Sunil and Sofa who in the past attacked the writings of Taslima Nasrin?
The fact is that the books, although inanimate, can be pretty powerful--- more
powerful than the rulers and the vested interest groups.
