I am happy to learn that Dr. Jaffor Ullah and his family are doing OK. I met
Dr. Ullah in 1995 when I started teaching at Xavier University of Louisiana
in New Orleans, and he was a senior scientist at the USDA Southern Regional
Research Center in that same city. Through our commonality in progressive
thinking, we became good friends. After the hurricane Katrina, my wife and I
have
been trying to reach friends in the New Orleans area. We could get in touch
with only one family. Their house, the house that we used to own, and most
other friends' houses are mostly under water and are probably beyond repair. My
heart goes to all those people; many are my old friends, colleagues and
students. It is indeed too painful to see their loss of life, livelihood and
things of sentimental value. I do wish them strength to cope with this
devastating natural disaster.
