Hi FreePerson, here's the letter I sent to Dean Hogg:
Dear Dean Hogg,
I have learned that Osgoode Hall, York University, plans to discipline a law student, Mr. Demitry Papasotiriou, for an article he wrote in response to articles written by Mr. Omar Siddiqui on Sharia, or Islamic law. I appeal to you to stop disciplinary actions against Mr. Papasotiriou.
I would like to say that as a woman, I found Mr. Siddiqui's efforts to justify beating women offensive. Fairness would demand that Mr. Siddiqui be disciplined for his statments, as Mr. Papasotirou is being disciplined, but I am not recommending that. I do ask, in the name of fairness, that you halt disciplinary actions against Mr. Papasotirou.
I would also like to draw attention to the role of the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in the complaints against Mr. Papasotirou. I have long objected to how CAIR carries out witch-hunts of people, thereby putting their lives and livelihoods at risk. As one person noted, they like to target people who do not have the means (clout or influence or due process) to oppose CAIR's efforts. CAIR has succeeded in pressuring school districts to dismiss teachers who dare say anything that Muslims construe as critical as Islam, including bringing up discrimination of non-Muslims in Islamic countries. It sought the firing of a U.S. political party analyst for an article he wrote in his personal capacity for an Orthodox Christian e-magazine, which indicates that CAIR is actively searching for grievances.
I am shocked that Lorna Marsden, president of York University, felt obliged to answer to CAIR to inform them about proceedings against Mr. Papasotirou. I insist that York University officials be equally accountable to those who uphold providing a platform for Mr. Papasotirou to voice his views.
Yours sincerely,
