Kurtz describes real dangers we face in Islamic fundamentalism, but his view of
the other side is naive. What makes the world a powder keg now is Islamic
fundamentalism confronting Christian fundamentalism combined with the dominance
of global corporations--in other words, theocratic fascism. This is what we
face in the Bush administration. If we actually did have world powers,
including a US government, who were committed to "the ideals of democratic
humanism--tolerance, pluralism, and dissent . . . [and] human rights," we
wouldn't be in such a dreadfully dangerous situation; we would have much more
hope. Tragically, Bush and his administration is more on a par with the most
extreme Islamic fundamentalists than they are with those who seek democracy,
the rule of law, justice and peace.
