Re: Most of the greatest Philosophers believed in God?

Dear M RS,

Yes there are indeed some famous philosophers, scientists who believed in God in the past, again there were  famous people who have rejected God and religion for various reasons. If one God-fearing Philosopher like Hegel or Kant can be cited, then on the same breath equal numbers of philosophers like Anaxagoras, Epicurus, Hume, Marx, Bertrand Russell etc. can be put forward  who have advocated living life without supreme being.

Please check:

Famous Dead Nontheists:

http://www.visi.com/%7Emarkg/atheists.html

living celebrity atheists/non-believers :

http://www.celebatheists.com/

Again, Among the famous scientists, a recent poll of U.S. National Academy of Science members indicated only 7% believe in a personal creator, down from 15% in 1933 and 29% in 1914. If anything, most scientists seem to be moving away from spirituality rather than toward it. ( http://www.secularhumanism.org/library/fi/stenger_19_1.html )

Also check the two links:

Leading scientists still reject God:

http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/t-24879_Leading_Scientists_Reject_God.html

http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/news/file002.html

Table 1 Comparison of survey answers among "greater" scientists
Belief in personal God 1914 1933 1998
Personal belief    27.7    15    7.0
Personal disbelief    52.7    68    72.2
Doubt or agnosticism    20.9    17    20.8

Belief in human immortality 1914 1933 1998
Personal belief    35.2    18    7.9
Personal disbelief    25.4    53    76.7
Doubt or agnosticism    43.7    29    23.3

So you have 72.2% of scientists that are atheist. 20.8% of scientists that are agnostic. Biologists had the lowest rate of belief at 5.5% and mathematicians had the highest rate of belief at 14.3%.

Regards.

Avijit

P.S. I haven't read that book though.

The above mentioned book has claimed that most of the greatest philosophers
of the past believed in God. Has anybody read this book?

Please visit this website:

The above website says:

Unlike what some atheists and agnostics propagate, most of the greatest
philosophers of the past believed in God.

Great influential thinkers like Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Descartes,
Rousseau, Bacon, Pascal, James, Mill, etc. concluded that God exists and
openly confessed their belief in a Supreme Being. Some great philosophers,
in fact, lived very devout Christian lives. This site was created to offer
undeniable and fully documented proof that the greatest thinkers of the past
believed in a Creator God.

"Nothing exists outside of God" (Fichte)

"God is the beginning of all things and the end of all things" (Hegel)
