The members of Advisory board of Mukto-mona condemns the brutal attack on Sheikh Hasina, AL leaders, and meeting attendees on August 21, 2004
We are stunned hearing the assassination attempt on Awami League leader, Sheikh Hasina, and other leaders of the party. The obscurantists and their followers had showered military-grade hand grenades from neighboring buildings on meeting attendees. The grenades have so far killed 14 people and injured over hundred innocent people. When the assassination team saw that Sheikh Hasina came out unscathed from the attack, they then showered the leader’s vehicle with bullets. Surprisingly, Sheikh Hasina was saved from the vicious attack.
It is very clear that a vested quarter comprising of Islamic extremists and some members of the ruling party alliance are hell-bent on assassinating Sheikh Hasina and decimate the Awami League. This vile group wants Bangladesh to be an Islamic Utopia; they know that as long as Awami League is present in Bangladesh soil, their dream will remain elusive and unfulfilled. We condemn in strongest word this vile attack on the main opposition leader.
We wish the civil society of Bangladesh will now come forward and join other secular forces to weed out bigotry, obscurantism, and communalism from Bangladesh. It also pains us to see the government being lame duck at this time of crisis. We however remain hopeful that the saner elements of Bangladesh will come forward to foil the evil design of this vile group. Long Live Bangladesh, Long Live Freedom.
