Urban Beekeeping
Honey bees are essential to our natural environment, the agrifood industry and
the entire food chain. Unfortunately, honey bees are dying at an alarming rate,
a phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disease/Disorder (CCD).
Major cities like Montreal provide an excellent habitat for bees. This course
shows what individuals are doing in cities around the world to reduce bee colony
losses through urban beekeeping in home gardens, city apiaries and roof top
gardens. This course teaches the legal rules for beekeeping in Montreal area,
basic bee biology and genetics, hive placement, how to get started in beekeeping
and how to get involved with the beekeeping community which is growing rapidly
in Montreal.
Students learn about bee hive products such as packaged bees and queens, venom,
honey, mead (honey wine), proplis, pollen, wax. The best time to take this
course is in the fall or spring, to be able to get ready for the beekeeping
season which usually starts in May (depends on the weather). The theory part of
the course is given over 1 day (usually a Sunday) starting at 10AM and finishing
at 3:30PM with honey and honey beer/wine tasting during the 1/2 hour lunch
break. At the end of this course students will feel confident in moving forward
with beekeeping. The practical part of this course is given usually in May at
various collaborating apiaries around Montreal (the students can choose their
preferred location at the course).
