Subject: REMINDER: Jan.12th Worldview Initiative Conference for 8th -12th graders!
bonniehoskins

From: Lana Thornton <lana.thornton@...>

Hello families with 8th - 12th grade students,

This is a reminder that the January 4th postmark deadline for a reduced fee to the excellent one-day Worldview Initiative Conference is almost here

Parents, we encourage you not to let your 8th - 12th grade students miss this Conference prepared just for them, to equip them with a deeper, clearer Christian Worldview so they can better navigate in this increasingly secular culture!

This multi-media Worldview training is scheduled for Saturday, January 12th from 9:00 - 4:00 at the Willliamson College, (the original Rockettown), 274 Mallory Station Road in Cool Springs.

The cost for the Conference is so reasonable; just $15.00 per student for registrations postmarked by Friday, January 4th!  The $15.00 includes a lunch of turkey or ham sandwich, chips, chocolate chip cookie, water bottle & a snack.

Below is information about the Conference, following this is the Registration Form, both of these are also included in the attachment.

The Ambassador Home School Speech & Debate Club invites all 8th - 12th graders (from home, private & public school) to attend the excellent one-day Christian Worldview Conference called the Worldview Initiative to be held at Williamson College in Cool Springs on Saturday, January 12th from 9:00 - 4:00.

This training is led by staff and students of Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee.  Bryan College is the first college east of the Mississippi to partner with Summit Ministries of Colorado and host Summit's 2 week Student Worldview Conferences and has done so every summer since 1996.  From this foundation, Bryan College staff and students built the Worldview Initiative ministry for students in grades 8 - 12.

The Worldview Initiative Conference is a highly interactive multimedia program designed specifically for 8th- 12th graders. This one-day conference focuses on understanding the Christian worldview by answering the question, “Who are we in relation to everything thing else that is?”  By exploring God, humanity, and culture, students are challenged to think critically and gain new insight into the way Christian believers should live. The Conference will engage any student with its use of pop culture examples, interactive breakout sessions led by Bryan College staff, and fresh content.

John Stonestreet is a man deeply involved in Christian Worldview ministry and while he is not leading or speaking at this event he has impacted it as a former Biblical Studies professor at Bryan College.  John currently divides his time in leadership with Summit Ministries and the Chuck Colson Center where he serves as co-host and commentator of their radio show Breakpoint providing thought-provoking commentaries on current events and life issues from a Biblical worldview

John says of this Conference, “The Worldview Initiative continues Bryan College's historically strong contribution in this task by teaching students how to understand the significance of the Christian Worldview and how to engage the competing ideas of our culture."

The Worldview Initiative information will strengthen your faith and fortify you for the challenges presented by our increasingly secular culture.  So plan to be there, bring your friends, invite your youth group!

So print out this e-mail and fill out the registration form or the attachment and mail in your registration!

Don't miss this informative one-day worldview training!

Seating is somewhat limited so register early and miss the late fees, too!

Looking forward to seeing you there,
The Ambassador Speech & Debate Club

p.s.
We'd so appreciate it if you would forward this reminder announcement to your friends, your tutorial, co-op or support group, your church youth group & any others you think will be interested? Thank you!

We will again be making arrangements for our 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade students (or ages 16-24) to participate in the best career exploration program in the United States – the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program (ASVAB CEP). Historically, the ASVAB has been known as the “Military’s Test”. While the military does rely on the ASVAB for evaluation of persons for entrance into the service, the ASVAB is no longer just for the military. Many independent civilian studies have found that the ASVAB is also a very accurate tool for determining vocational aptitudes in the civilian workplace. When combined with the CEP, this program can greatly assist you in guiding your testers toward a career path.

We will offer the test at Blakemore United Methodist Church, 3601 W. End Ave, Nashville, on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. The testing will begin at 9:00 a.m. The testing takes about three hours, and the results will be made available around 1:30 p.m., that afternoon. I encourage you to respond and sign up for this outstanding opportunity.  Please provide a sack lunch for your student for a short lunch break.

Note from Bonnie: See attached flyer for additional information. We will not be able to offer the ASVAB during the MTHEA Curriculum Fair Expo this year due to space restrictions.

Nashville Krav Maga, a homeschool family owned and operated studio, is hosting a Women's Self Defense Seminar on Saturday, February 2nd from 9AM until 12:30. In this 3.5 hour specialty class, women are taught how to safely and effectively fend off an attacker with punches, elbows, knees, and kicks. This is open to all women ages 13 and up.

Krav Maga, pronounced `krahv muhGAH', means `contact combat' in Hebrew. It is the ofď¬cial defensive tactics system of the Israeli military. The system is simple, practical, and instinctive. Because the techniques mimic the body's natural instinct, they are easy to learn and easy to remember under stress.

In 1885 Samuel Watkins donated the funds used to create the Watkins Institute, one of the finest community-oriented education facilities in the middle Tennessee region. For 120 years, Watkins’ role has been flexible, addressing the unmet educational needs of Nashville.  Today, Watkins College of Art, Design Film is an independent institution dedicated to providing education in the visual arts. It is an institution that values service to the community and seeks to be a resource for the community. In this role, Watkins offers non-degree arts education in addition to the college curriculum.  Watkins Community Education program sets the stage for people of all ages to learn the process of creating art in a variety of fascinating media. Classes are taught by talented practicing artists and emphasis is placed on both the finished product and the process of thinking, designing, communicating and creating.

Young Artists are introduced to art fundamentals through drawing, painting, working with clay and other techniques. Teens learn about past and present artists while expanding upon their artistic skills. This spring Watkins Community Education is offering the following programs for youth and teens:

Spring Intersession Multi-Arts Camp, March 18-22, Tuition: $325

Our Spring Intersession Multi-Arts Camp provides an enriching week for your child to experience the fun, stimulation, and joy of making art and friends in our state-of-the-art studios. Campers will work on age-appropriate projects in a variety of media including drawing, painting, clay, sculpture, collage, printmaking, and more! Dress for mess and bring a bag lunch. All art supplies are included.

Group A: Ages 5-7
Group B: Ages 8-10
Group C: Ages 11-13

Register online, by phone, mail, or in person by March 4. Scholarship applications are available online and are due by February 15.  Sibling discount: First child pays full tuition. $25 discount applies to each additional sibling.

 Spring Intersession Camp Intern

We’re looking for 3 highly motivated high-school JUNIORS or SENIORS who:

  • Love making art
  • Have experience working with kids (babysitting, helping younger siblings, previous work or volunteer experience, etc.)
  • Are responsible, personable, positive, and proactive.
  • Want to gain work experience for their college resume.
  • Want to get the most out of Spring Intersession by assisting our professional teaching artists to provide a creative camp experience for kids ages 5-13
To apply, fill out the application form on our website by February 1, 2013

Teen Workshop: Show-stopping Stop Motion Animation

$75, plus $25 materials fee
Teaching Artist: Carmen Mims

This workshop is designed for teens to explore the magic of stop motion film and animation. Participants will view stop motion short films, create flipbooks as a warm-up, and dive into creating a stop motion film based on a big idea of their choice using drawing, modeling clay, puppetry, objects from life, or a combination of techniques. Participants will then bring images to life in iMovie. The workshop will conclude with each participant sharing his/her stop motion short film with the group and creating an online library of films using YouTube. Register online today!

Adult Classes Open to Teens:

Comic Illustration
Wednesdays, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
February 6 - 27 (4 weeks)
$100, plus $20 materials fee
Open to Adults and Teens 14 and up
Teaching Artist: Michael Lapinski

More than just superheroes and the funny papers, comic art has a long and rich history extending back to Ancient Egypt and forward to the Graphic Novels of the present day. This course will uncover the roots of the art form while instructing aspiring comic creators in the fundamental craft of telling stories composed of long-form sequential art. The end goal will be for students to create their own 3-page comic. All supplies included in materials fee, and students will leave with a set of ink pens to continue the creative process at home.

Nashville: City on Film
Wednesdays, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
February 6 – April 3 (9 weeks)
$205
Teaching Artist: John Warren
Open to Adults and Teens 16 and up

The “City Symphony” is a poetic style of documentary filmmaking created in the 1920s that sought to celebrate the urban environment by capturing its life, rhythm and movement. In this shoestring digital documentary filmmaking course, students will chronicle the sights and sounds of Nashville from their unique perspectives to create a cinematic portrait of the city. Students should bring a digital recording device that captures video and sound (digital camera, iPhone, Flip video camera, etc.).

Registration for these classes is open until January 21 online, by phone or mail.

Registration for Summer 2013 Camps, which occur during the month of June, will open by the first week of February.  More information on these camps and teen workshops will be available on our website soon.  Pre-College (for highly motivated juniors and seniors) will run from July 8-26.  More information on that program is available online

From: Diana Kulas <DianaKulas@...>

Williamson County Spelling Families,
Here is the long awaited e-mail regarding this year's spelling bee. I apologize that it is a bit later than usual. The Middle Tennessee Regional Bee had a change of sponsors again and, this year, it looked like they might not get one at all. This is what that means for our homeschool bee. None of the schools can register for the bee until there is a sponsor for the regional bee. So, we could not begin planning our bee until the sponsor was secured and other details were attended to by that new sponsor! I can assure you that, since those decisions were finalized, my assistant-coordinator, Diana Kulas, and I have been working as hard as we could to get this information out to you. Thank you for understanding.
Sincerely,
Cammy Hubbard
Coordinator, Williamson County Homeschool Spelling Bee

WHAT: 2013 Williamson County Homeschool Spelling Bee

WHEN: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.--check in begins at 8:30 a.m.. Plan to be signed in and seated by 8:50 a.m..

WHERE: Christ Community Church, 1215 Hillsboro Road, Franklin in the Fellowship Hall

WHO: Kindergarten-8th grade homeschooled students who live in Williamson County. Yes, you must reside in the county!

We will have a bee for the younger students, K-3rd grade, and a bee for the older students, 4th-8th grade. The bees will take place simultaneously. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the 4th-8th grade bee will advance to the Williamson County Spelling Bee in Franklin which is currently scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 9 a.m.. The first and second place winners at the county level will then proceed to the Middle Tennessee Regional Spelling Bee at MTSU, Murfreesboro, TN in March.

Attached to this e-mail and also at the Williamson County Homeschool Spelling Bee website, www.wix.com/dianakulas/wchsbeeyou will find the Study Words for K-3rd Graders and the Scripps 2013 School Bee Study List which is for 4th-8th graders. 4th-8th grade students may also study the 2013 Spell It.  The online version can be accessed at www.myspellit.com or you may download a pdf of the 2013 Spell It on the resources page of the WCHS Bee site. You may also access the Scripps National Spelling Bee website at www.spellingbee.com. Here you will find many study helps and other pertinent information.  If you are not receiving the attachments or links in this or future e-mails, you are receiving your e-mails as a digest. You can access the needed information by going to your homeschool group's e-mail loop website.

The cost of the spelling bee is $5 per child with a $12 family maximum. Registration fees cover Williamson County Homeschool Group's registration fee to the Scripps National Spelling Bee organization. The fees also cover the cost of certificates, ribbons, trophies and other expenses incurred by the bee. These costs have been greatly reduced by our sponsors Brentwood Driver Training, owned by homeschool parents Jeremy and Melanie Lyon, and Brilliant Sky Toys & Books in Brentwood, TN.  Please be sure to thank them and patronize their business!

You should register your children for the Williamson County Homeschool Spelling Bee at our website. The address is www.wix.com/dianakulas/wchsbee.  You will find a lot of useful information and resources pertaining to our spelling bee at the website and you can even pay your registration fees via PayPal if you would like! Please note, the deadline for registration is 9 p.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2013. You must register and your registration fees must be received by this date! Also, you must register your children in the same grade that they are currently registered with your umbrella program. If you have questions that are not addressed by this e-mail or at the WCHS Bee site, you may send an e-mail to wchsbee@....

We ask that you familiarize yourself and your children with the PDF, Rules for Local Spelling Bees found on our resources page.  You might even want to role play different scenarios with your children.  We also recommend that you take some time to peruse the Frequently Asked Questions found here: WCHS Bee FAQs.

There will NOT be childcare at the bee. If you choose to bring your little ones with you, they must be quiet or you should be willing to step outside when they are not. It is very distracting to the spellers to hear small children in the audience even if they are only making "happy" sounds.

Please be sure to pack a nutritious snack for your child to eat during our short intermission/bathroom break. We anticipate that this intermission will last 15 minutes. Parents, we will need your assistance to make sure this is done in a timely manner. We don't want the bee to last into the lunch hour. Please offer your children all the help and encouragement they may need to move quickly.

If at all possible, please do not leave the bee before it's conclusion. The bee will likely last until around noon. Please make sure your schedule will allow you to stay for the duration. If that is not possible, please consider not participating this year. There is no way to predict how long the bee will last as we cannot foresee how well the students will spell! We would like all spellers to be available after the bee for some group photos and the awards ceremony!

Following the bee, we will have a short reception with snacks and drinks.

Thank you very much!
Cammy Hubbard
Coordinator, Williamson County Homeschool Spelling Bee

*Please feel free to circulate this to your homeschool e-mail groups.
All Williamson County homeschooled children are welcome to
participate. But all official information will be circulated through
the Williamson County Homeschool Group's (wc-announce loop). So, watch there for any updates. Friends who are not on this list may not get important
information, so make sure you check this site for them or have them

Tuesdays only beginning February 12

2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
PHOTOGRAPHY
(middle school to adult)

You will need a digital camera. It would be great if you had a DSLR, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_single-lens_reflex_camera, but this is not necessary. If you can change your camera settings, like Aperture or the "A" setting, or Shutter Speed, or "TV" setting, and Manual or the "M" setting, that will be fine.

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CAMERA'S MANUAL. Learn how to use your camera and exercise your creative eye as well as apply basic photography rules to photo shoots. Apply what you learn both in class and on your own time. This class will also touch a little on external lighting.

You will need to know how to upload pictures to your computer. If you have Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, GIMP, Picassa, or other photo-editing software, that will be helpful, but again, not necessary.

This will be a very hands-on class with photo shoots and a field trip downtown during the semester.

A group will be set up on Flickr, so you can upload your pictures so everyone can look at the work the students are doing and the progress they are making.

U.S. Government Current Events Discussion - (Bambas)
G.A.T.E. - Platinum Dance Studios in Lebanon (Hwy. 109)
Tuesdays only beginning Feb. 12

This class is a discussion group aimed at keeping interest and knowledge high about what makes our government work and what it is working on!

For those who just completed the U.S. Govt class during fall semester, we will take what we learned in class and apply it to what we find in the news ...to help us understand what is going on and help shape our views and opinions about what is happening.

Other students are welcome to join in this discussion with us, and maybe you'll come away with a desire to be involved and learn more about our country and our government as well! An important part of this class will be learning how to give and take in a discussion so that you can make your point clearly without attacking those with differing views.

No text is required, but access to newspapers, magazines, and internet are necessary. Homework will be light compared to high school credit courses, but some weekly research and readings will be required.
