Papo Ortega´s CUBANOSON, (New York´s Cuban Orchestra,) celebrates their
4th anniversary

www.theclave.com/cubanoson

After playing piano for over 30 years for various Latin bands, in 2005, Papo
Ortega created his own orchestra known as Papo Ortega´s CUBANOSON, (New
York´s Cuban Orchestra.) This orchestra performs traditional Cuban music in
their interpretation of Cuba´s Son Montuno integrating various instruments and
adding a flavor of New York style Salsa while maintaining their Cuban roots.
Papo says: "I want to thank all of you who have been with us from the
beginning, to those who are just getting to know us, and those we haven´t even
met yet that will soon discover traditional Cuban music as interpreted by this
pianist and his orchestra. Since 2005, the members of this orchestra have been a
great extended family and I want to thank all of the musicians who have
performed and continue to perform with us. CUBANOSON would not be where it is
today had it not been for all of you. I would also like to give special thanks
to Ed & Cari Castaeda for their incredible promotion of Cuban events, and
specifically for all of the work and support they have given CUBANOSON."

CUBANOSON has been featured at NJPAC, the West Gate Lounge, Westchester´s
Emelin Theatre, Union City´s Park Theatre, UNIVISION TV, XM Satellite Radio,
Music Choice Channel, Club Winner Circle in Westbury, NY, numerous festivals andevents including performing most recently at the NY Hilton at the 9th Annual New York´s Salsa Congress opening the congress for the legendary pianist Eddie
Palmieri.

What´s new for Cubanoson? Rosa Romero, Cubanoson´s stage and production manager states, "We have just produced two song videos for our 4th anniversary, to be released on the web on the orchestra´s anniversary day, (October 30th, 2009.) The two music videos are of two of the most popular songs from their debut CD, `Recordando A Cuba.´ The two selections are"Cubanoson" and "Recordando A Cuba". Both of these songs, written by the orchestra´s leader Papo Ortega and have been on numerous playlists around the world including CD compilations in England and Italy."

Recordando A Cuba
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjNBsTrglc0

Cubanoson
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecOr_orXSA0

In Cubanoson´s song videos, produced by Guido Diaz of Skylight Studios in
Union, NJ, CUBANOSON features in the brass section their lead trumpet and
musical director, Roberto Rodriguez Jr., Trombonist Jose "Leonardo2 Freire,
and Trumpeter Guido Gonzalez; in the string section, tres guitarist, Junior
Rivera, and bassist Willie Cintron, on percussion Jaime Figueroa and Larry
Figueredo, on vocals Jorge "Papito" Sanchez and Orlando "El Nino"
Espinosa, and the orchestra"s leader, lead vocalist and pianist, Leonel
"Papo" Ortega.

Papo, what were the most memorable moments of these past four years? "There
have been so many great moments. For example, these are but a few legends that have sat in with the band live: Cachao, Joseito Mateo, Chocolate Armenteros,
Marcelino Valdes, Lalo Rodriguez, Luisito Quintero (who also recorded on our debut CD ("Recordando A Cuba") to name a few. Over the years, we have had
the opportunity to open for several great stars including, Paquito D´Rivera,
Brenda K. Starr, Spanish Harlem, Tito Puente Orchestra, Milly Quesada, Johnny
Ventura and most recently Eddie Palmieri."

When asked about future recordings, Papo Ortega states, "We are back in the
studio recording our next CD. Like our debut CD, our goal is to make every song
danceable and enjoyable to dancers and listeners. This new CD will be completed
by the end of 2009, beginning of 2010, and hopefully we can get it out worldwide
and submit it to the Latin Grammy´s for 2010. Incidentally, our debut CD, "Recordando A Cuba" made it to the 2007 Final Entry List in 12 categories."

In closing, Papo says, thank you to all of Cubanoson´s Musicians and to the many Djs, Radio Hosts, Promoters, Event Planners, Friends, Family and Supporters for their continuing success. "We hope to see you at our next event and if you are hosting one - let us make your next event an even better one."

LEXIMAN WORLD EXCLUSIVE
Here at the Jungle we are thrilled to host the legendary Leximan, nominee of the
Latin American Music Award, playing, for the first time ever, a cracking
selection of tunes from his new album, Plan B, an extraordinary combination of
timba, reggaeton and merengue, featuring 10 original songs that are already
hitting the streets of Cuba and the USA.

On this latest album Leximan worked with some of the top Cuban reggaeton
artists, including El Micha, Gente de Zona, De Calle, Samill y Meisen, Jimy de
Barrio, and the superstar of the moment, Cathy Picante

Leximan was born in Santiago de Cuba, where he grew up listening to reggae,
rumba, Afro-Cuban, congas and comparsas, his first musical inspiration deriving
from traditional music, salsa and bolero.

His career really kicked off when he started exploring new ways of combining
different styles of music and he is now renown for his fusion of rap and salsa,
blended with Afro-Cuban rhythms. In 2000 his first album Revelacíon Faray was
released, becoming so popular all over Santiago de Cuba that it was a mainstay
on the radio airwaves.

Now resident in the UK , Leximan continues to broaden his horizon. He has been
greatly influenced by hip hop, old skool, dancehall, r&b and bashment, all of
which were reflected in his last album, Deja la Guerra, one of the top 10
reggaeton/ hip-hop albums in the UK.

musicality exercises, choreography work, the toughest and ultimately

DEVIL DISCO CLUB feat Findo Gask live- 29 January 2010
Trouble is back 'n' black!
You can be sure the Devil Disco Club DJs - Kris Wasabi [Wasabi Disco], Nick Yuill [Solescience, Shoot The Pump], Hobbes & Erik d'Viking [Trouble DJs] - will cover all the bases from soul and rap, myriad strains of vintage disco from New York, classic eighties boogie, cosmic, italo and other rarities, not to mention some poppin' electro-funk and proto-house gems.  You know where it's at!
Live guests Findo Gask make the kind of off-kilter pop perfection you might dream up if you loved the Beach Boys, Cornelius, the Associates, Squarepusher and music from computer games.  Gregory [bass] and Gerard [vocals] have been in bands together since they met at school in Kirkcaldy.  All of the band have a degree of classical training - Gregory and Michael [drums] went to Fife Youth Orchestra together - but it wasn't until 2006 that Gavin [keys] joined, bringing with him a wealth of electronic equipment, and everything was turned on its head.
In December 2007, the band released their debut single, Va-Va-Va - hailed by Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie as "staggeringly good... just an astonishing record" - on OSCarr, the label run by Glasgow's Sunday night clubbing institution, Optimo.  Since then, the perfectionist Glasgow quartet are taking their own time crafting giddy pop epiphanies.  They're also part-time remixers, having re-imagined tracks by Long Blondes, Yoko Ono, Psapp and Bloc Party.

The Devil Disco Club is a new party about going back to basics, embracing your dark side and letting it all hang out.  It's about listening to some of the most exciting new dance music out there alongside the classics and it's about checking out a buzzing new live act that will move your feet and engage your mind.  It's about doing all of this alongside some of your favourite people in one of Embra's favourite venues: the Bongo Club.

Music: soul, rap, boogie, italo, cosmic, disco, electro-funk, acid & early/proto-house: re-edits, remixes, extended versions etc

The Beltane Fire Society celebrates IMBOLC- 31 January 2010
A special celebration this evening for Imbolc, with DJs
The Beltane Fire Society was created in the late 1980’s as a community arts project, celebrating the seasonal quarter-day festivals through street performance theatre.  BFS continues this role to the present day, and encourages members of both Edinburgh’s Community and the wider world to join us in continuing to celebrate these traditional events.
Imbolc is the festival which marks the early beginnings of spring, and celebrates the return of the warmer months of the year.  The festival focuses on the Cailleach, who gives birth to the Sun, or Golden Boy at this time. This represents the first kindling of warmth for the summer months to come, and the end of the Cailleach’s reign during winter.  Imbolc is an Irish Gaelic word meaning ‘in the belly’, and this indicates the readiness of the earth to ‘give birth’ to life again in spring.

Brigid is another character associated with Imbolc.  She is considered a guardian of learning, prophesy, poetry, healing and metal-working, and at Imbolc serves as the midwife for the Cailleach as she gives birth to the Golden Boy, and nurtures him until Beltane.

Imbolc was traditionally held at the start of spring, and has been associated with indications of spring, such as the first lambs of spring being born, and leaves beginning to appear on the trees. It was a time for the people of the community to come together in winter, celebrate their success in surviving this harsh time, and look forward to the return of spring and summer.

The Beltane Fire Festival is held every year during the night of 30th April on Calton Hill in Edinburgh.  An audience of around 12,000 people come to share the spectacular procession, justifiably famous for its intensity and colour.

Celebrate the start of the summer at The Beltane Fire Festival: a unique and wild procession of fire, drumming and revelry on Calton Hill.   Witness this spectacular revival of the ancient Celtic fertility festival in the heart of the Scottish capital.

The Beltane Fire Festival will take place on Calton Hill during the night of Friday 30th April 2010.
We are always looking for new members to join our society, and become part of the dynamic and vibrant Beltane community.   To get involved, please email volunteers@...

In 2000 the visual artist Robert Wilson and the musician Tom Waits turned Georg Büchner's unfinished and fragmented play into a musical at the Berliner Ensemble.  The QMU Drama Society has taken some of these musical elements and incorporated them into a new translation of the play.  This allows for a new and vivid interpretation of Woyzeck that focuses on the rapid interchange between comedy and tragedy, delving deeper into the confusion and darkness of the human condition.

Translated and directed by Steven Kirschbaum, this production draws upon his own experience working in fast food restaurants and other poorly rewarded jobs.  The longer one works in a high-pressure routine working environment, the more mechanical and motorized the body - and the mind - become.

With Iain Orr's masterful arrangement of Tom Wait's lyrics played live by The Checkmates, the poetry of Büchner and Waits are interwoven to explore the broken mind of Woyzeck

Mamer, one of China's most innovative and influential young artists, is to return to the UK together with his band for an 8-date tour, starting on 18 March 2010.  Hailing from Qitai County in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Mamer (pronounced "Ma-moor") grew up, like every Kazakh child: on horsebacks and in the strong musical tradition of the Kazakhs  his father and relatives taught him to sing folk songs and play the dombra, a lute popular in Central Asia.

'Eagle', Mamer's debut solo album, was released on Real World Records in 2009.  The album features songs of the grasslands that are deeply rooted in traditional Kazakh music, while incorporating influences from Western folk and rock.  Mamer's deep voice is combined with dazzlingly fast plucking and strumming on guitar, dombra and other traditional instruments.  This is lyrical troubadour folk infused with an alt.country sensibility.... also known as Chinagrass! (Full press release attached)

UK reactions to 'Eagle':

"'Eagle' is terrific, and questions every assumption about "country" and geography in popular music." **** Uncut (no. 76 in Uncut's 2009 top 100)

"Another surprise from the Far East ... unpretentious, open and no-nonsense." **** Mojo (no. 9 in Mojo's World Music Albums of 2009)

"Irresistible." The Independent on Sunday

"A lovely, original and haunting creation." The Observer

"This is music for a road movie evoking endless space and roaming horses." **** The Evening Standard

"'Eagle' sounds undeniably familiar, a record worthy of welcoming into the home each day, like an old friend you miss every moment they are away. An absolute triumph." The Line of Best Fit

"An intriguing album." *** The Guardian

"Other current obsession is Mamer 'Eagle'. Astounding eastern music. Never heard anything like it. Wonderful." Stephen Fry (on Twitter)

"A wonderful record...mesmerizing...a beautiful voice…trance-like melodies." Peter Gabriel

"A lovely and deceptively simple album that reveals ever more of its layered charms with each listen." fRoots (no. 18 in fRoots' New albums of 2009 Critics Poll)

"Another indication that the regional sounds of China are becoming cool." **** Songlines (Top of the World album)

"China may not seem an obvious homeland for Bluegrass, but the plains of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were grassy enough to inspire Mamer." **** Financial Times

"The production on this album is astounding... marvel at the rich sound of this Chinese gem." London Tourdates

"An already well-developed talent with a rumbling, resonant, gravel-encrusted bass voice that could trigger a seismometer several hundred kilometres away." *** R2/ Rock'n'Reel

"There's a gentle dignity to Mamer's incantatory strumalongs, a quality evocative of American Country or even Scottish music." *** The Daily Telegraph

"Immediately accessible combination of programming and organic instruments." Morning Star

"Highly original and accessible music... [An] atmospheric solo debut, which has a vivid sense of place." BBC Music

"Glorious music." Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

"A stunning album ... really atmospheric." Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

"'Blackbird' [is] a haunting sing-song Kazakh-folk sing-along with a nagging melody that feels like it's been around forever. You'll find yourself humming it for days after hearing it." Fly Global Music

"A skilful blend of East and West, old and new." The Scotsman

Saint Patrick's Salsa Festival

When Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, he said to his friends, lets have a party, and so it was, but one forgotten fact is that Saint Patrick loved dancing and Salsa was his favorite.

So in honor of this the nice people of Dublin have now decided to restart the Saint Patrick Salsa Festival!

So why not come to the Salsa Party or stay for the whole Saint Patrick's week of festivities? And to help you to come theClave is offering a very nice discounted price to all foreign visitors.

Check this and all the Salsa Congress out at:
