Subject: New at "Likembe": Classic Makossa, Nelly Uchendu, Kenyan Hits!
beadlejp
Send Email Send Email

Dear Friends:

Recent posts on my audioblog, "Likembe," feature a number of classic hard-to-find tracks from Africa.
http://likembe.blogspot.com/
From Classic Makossa:

". . . Back in the mid-1980s if there was one musical style that rivaled Congo music in the hearts of Africans, it was makossa out of Cameroun. Given that Cameroun is a country of numerous ethnic groups, there is a constellation of musical styles there competing for attention: tchamassi, bikutsi, ashiko and mangambe among them. The music of Cameroun's largest city, Douala, makossa's international popularity can be attributed partly to one man, Manu Dibango. His record "Soul Makossa" (a song that is not even true makossa!) was a smash hit in 1972, but makossa the genre reached its apogee in the mid-1980s thanks to the hard work of another, producer/musician Aladji Touré, whose Touré Jim's Records launched numerous careers and revived many others. . "

From Nigeria's Golden Voice:

". . .
Comb and Razor's recent post on Onyeka Onwenu has put me in mind of another exemplary Nigerian female singer. I'm referring to Nelly Uchendu, the "Golden Voice of Nigeria," who passed away on May 19, 2005. Actually, Uchendu was a bit of a musical oddity. While there has been no shortage of female "pop" singers in the Naija music scene, and women singers dominate Nigerian gospel, Nelly was one of the few female singers in the Igbo highlife genre (actually I can think of only one other, Queen Azaka). . ."

From Brother Charlly Computer & his Friends:

". . .
Reader/listener Tim Clifford has a big interest in East African music and is responsible for two of the best installments in Matsuli's late, great "African Serenades" series. Tim's working on a detailed discography of East African music and I was happy to pass on to him a listing of titles in my collection. In response to one of these, he wrote, ". . .I can't wait for you to post the single by Brother Charlly Computer and the Gloria Kings as it just might be the best band name ever!" . . . Of course, I agree. I'm happy to post Brother Charlly, and why don't we listen to a few more Kenyan 45s while we're at it? Most of these are from around the same period, the early to middle '80s, and they are among the last singles pressed in that country (record piracy pretty much killed the format within a few years). . . "

Dear Friends:

There are a number of new posts on my audioblog Likembe.

From "Why I'm an "Ebenezer Man'":

". . .If Virgin Records had licensed some of Obey's great Nigerian releases like Current Affairs (Decca WAPS 488), Sound of the Moment (Decca WAPS 498) or Eyi Yato (Decca WAPS 508), they might have gotten somewhere. Those records, all released in 1980, with their soul-stirring Yoruba harmonies, mind-bending guitar work and echoes of American rhythm and blues, display the great Obey at the peak of his powers. In comparison Sunny Adé, as good as he is, is just outclassed. . ."

From "
Hummin' With the Bees!":

". . .The Katenga Humming Bees, led by guitarist T.C. Katenga, were a popular band in Malawi during the 1970s. Other than that, I can't tell you anything about them. I love the rough and ready quality of these two tracks, issued on the Zakwathu label (MX 104) circa 1973. . ."

From "
Music From the Heart of Africa":

". . .It turns out that Chad has a small but vibrant music industry, and many of its artists are showcased on the website Ialtchad.com. As you might expect from a country located in the geographical center of Africa, the musical influences run the gamut: from soukous and hip-hop to highlife, mbalax and even Ethiopian funk. Maitre Gazonga's LP Les Jaloux Saboteurs (Tangent/Celluloid TAN LP 7003) was recorded in Abidjan, apparently utilizing musicians from several African countries.
. . "

From "Franco in the Age of Authenticité":

". . .It just so happens that among the many hours of African 45s on tape reels that I recently digitized are thirteen tracks that le Grand Maitre recorded with his band le Tout Puissant OK Jazz in 1972-73. This era is interesting for several reasons. In October 1971 President Mobutu Sese-Seko proclaimed his policy of Authenticité, which had a number of implications. For one thing, the name of the Democratic Republic of Congo was changed to the Republic of Zaïre (it was changed back following Mobutu's overthrow in 1997). The cultural dimensions of authenticité are described by Graeme Ewens, in his essential biography Congo Colossus: the Life and Legacy of Franco & OK Jazz (Buku Press, UK, 1994). . ."

From "
Another Mystery Tape":

". . . Alèmayèhu Eshèté has been called "Ethiopia's Elvis" or "The James Brown of Ethiopia" for his musical style and manner of dress. He's been on the scene since the mid-1950s, when he revealed a talent for imitating the singers Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Ray Charles. In 1956 he joined the Police Orchestra in Addis Abeba, and from 1961 onward has formed numerous bands and recorded uncounted songs that have become popular standards. . ."

Who is Drumming at the Festival?
We knew that an African dance festival just would not be right without the best of the best in African drumming! With that in mind, we have invited the superstars of the National Ballets of Guinea, Senegal and Mali to not only drum for the workshops, but to teach you a little of what they know. In the midst of all the dancing, we have four drum workshops from Friday through Saturday for you to take!

Loran Camara (Guinea) - Djembe Drum - Friday 5:30-7:00pm
Loran Camara hails from Conakry, Guinea. A member of Les Ballets Africaines for more than 20 years, Loran Camara is one of the most respected music artists from the National Ballet of Guinea. He is now residing in New York City and he teaches and performs at workshops and events across the US.

Mangue Sylla (Guinea) - Women's Dun Dun - Saturday, 12:00-1:30pm
Mangue Sylla, from Conakry, Guinea started playing music at the age of 10. Sangban being his first and favorite instument, he learned from some of the best teachers and performers including Lamine Bayo, Kanda, Lancey and Numudi. In 1993 he joined "Les Merveilles de Guinee," where he studied under the leadership of the late Mohammed Kemoko Sano. Mangue Sylla currently teaches and performs around the world and  resides in New York City where he teaches regular drum classes.

Cheikh Tairou M'Baye (Senegal) - Sabar Drum - Saturday 4:30-6:00pm
Senegalese sabar musician, Cheikh Tairou M'Baye is a Wolof griot from Medina, Senegal. In 1987 he founded the drum and dance group Sing Sing Rhythms, named after his ancestor, Sing Sing Faye, the first master drummer of the Cape Vert peninsula. The group has performed and toured extensively in Africa, Europe, Canada, the Virgin Islands and the U.S., and have recorded with such luminaries as Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour, Randy Weston, Jack DeJohnette, Angelique Kidjoand Craig Harris. Cheikh M'Baye is currenlty based in Harlem, New York, where he teaches and performs regularly.

Fode Seydou Bangoura(Guinea) - Djembe Drum - Sunday, 3:00-4:30pm

Born in the village of Samou in Southeastern Guinée, Fodé has been recognized internationally for his work as the lead drummer with the acclaimed ensemble "Les Ballets Merveilles de Guinée." A protégé of the late, great Mohamed Kemoko Sano, Fodé is now one of the most respected and sought after drummers of his generation. He has toured the world, has dozens of recording credits, and has appeared on national television, including a featured spot on MTV. He has performed at Walt Disney World and at the Lincoln Center Festival.  He currently resides in New York, where he teaches Djembe, performs with a variety of ensembles, and accompanies some of New York's finest dance instructors.

Idol 2008 is coming to your area and for the first time this year is
open to dancers to enter and compete to become Idol 2008.
Idol 2008 is the music and dance competition for singers, vocal
groups and now for dancers and dance groups to enter. 2007 was the
competitions third year, with over 10,000 applicants entering. This
makes the competition the largest talent contest outside a certain
ITV show and with Idol's new dance category, this year's contest is
set to be even bigger!
The competition will now offer singers and dancers the opportunity to
perform live in front of large audiences as well as the chance to win
up to £25,000 in prizes if crowned the UK'S 2008 Idol. This
competition is the ultimate search for the cream of the UK's talent
and with over 7,000 dancers and singers already registered
nationally; this year's standard is expected to be the highest to
date.
Idol 2008 auditions are presently kicking off all across the UK, with
applicants auditioning from August in hope of being chosen to
progress through to the live rounds. The competition has two age
categories; Under 18 and 18 and over. The selected individuals from
auditions will then qualify to appear in a regional live shows in
front of a capacity crowd. Thereafter, only the very finest acts will
then qualify for the National Grand Final to compete to be the UK'S
ultimate.
The competition poses fantastic opportunities to not only develop
performance skills and personal ability, but to expose competitor's
talent. The latter stages of the competition provide competitors with
the opportunity to impress the judges and many guests from record
labels, agencies and the entertainment industry.
Additionally, the vocal winners will receive a range of prizes
including for the winning act the prize of a recording contract to
release their single with the aim to nationally chart. The dance
winners will go on a UK tour and appear in the video for the vocal
winner's single.
Last year's winners B-Kay & Kazz are set to storm the National charts
with their debut single `You know it's right' being released on July
21st. The talented duet have been at Indie store number 1 for 10
weeks and just concluded a 200 date UK tour.
With the competition offering a multitude of prospects and prizes for
undiscovered talent, this is one opportunity not to be missed for
singers and now dancers alike.

Dear Friends:

I've recently added some new music to my audioblog Likembe.

From Memories of Oliver de Coque:

". . .Listening to Oliver de Coque for the first time in 1984, I was made aware that there was a whole lot more to Nigerian music than King Sunny Adé and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. De Coque, born Oliver Sunday Akanite, passed away of a heart attack on Friday, June 20, joining in death his colleagues Sonny Okosuns (who died only in May), Stephen Osita Osadebe, Nelly Uchendu and Warrior. With his passing, Nigerian highlife music, on life support for the last twenty years, has sustained a mortal blow. It's doubtful that anybody, or anything, can take his place. . . "

From
Ebenezer Obey On The Town!:

". . .As I promised, here is the second installment of ground-breaking classic jùjú by the great Ebenezer Obey, his LP On The Town (Decca WAPS 30, reissued as Obey WAPS), recorded in London in 1970. Here we find the Chief Commander and his International Brothers stretching out with a non-stop medley on Side 1. Side 2 features two extended cuts. I especially enjoyed the highlife 'Ajoyio/Ore Mi Maje Aja'. . ."

Please feel free to drop by!
