This September, a very special numerical sequence will occur on the second
Wednesday of the month:

The date will be 09/09/09.

For those who would like to mark the day, we will meet at Watts Bay to sail in
the early twilight hours, then adjourn to Perkins Restaurant in Cranberry to
synchronize our watches at 9:09 PM and enjoy coffee and dessert and some
nautical talk. We'll plan to meet at Watts Bay at 6PM, rig and launch some
boats (how many depends on your participation!), sail until the sun begins to
set, then return to harbor, haul the boats out and put them away and convoy to
dessert. RSVP to Ken Andrews at kandrews84us@... to participate.

Hi MSC members!

I want to invite each of you to participate in the Regatta at Lake Arthur this
coming weekend. The 11th Regatta at Lake Arthur will occur this coming
weekend, August 1 and 2.

One of the highlights of the weekend is a fireworks display on Saturday night.
MSC has arranged for the use of the Davis Hollow cabin for Saturday night for
the convenience of our members who would like to stay overnight after the
fireworks.

We are sponsoring sailboat races on Saturday and Sunday, as well as providing an
opportunity for our members to watch the fireworks from the water on Saturday
evening.

To promote Moraine Sailing Club, I am asking for your support and help in
conducting the races on Saturday and Sunday and providing information to Regatta
visitors at Lakeview Beach at a club information booth between 10 and 4 each
day.

I will be Day Steward on Saturday. I need three to four people to assist in
conducting the Saturday races (between 9 and 3). For Sunday, I would like to
actually sail my keelboat in the races, so I am looking for a Day Steward and
three to four people to run the Sunday race from about 10AM registration to a
finish around 2PM.

Saturday will feature three races (starting 11:30/12:15/1:00) on a triangular
course in front of Lakeview Beach and stretching toward Bear Run and Watts Bay.
Sunday will feature a "pursuit" format in which the slower boats will start
first, with the fastest boats starting last similar to what we did on the last
race day of the 2008 season. Keel boats will start at noon, other monohulls will
start at 12:20, and catamarans will start at 12:45. Start and finish line will
be off Lakeview Beach, with a mark near the dam and the other mark near the
island opposite Watts Bay.

Registration Forms are attached to this message and will be available at the MSC
information booth at Lakeview Beach as well. Participating boats will receive a
yellow streamer to fly from the top of their mainsail during the race.

In addition to race committee staff, I also need several people to represent
Moraine Sailing Club at our information booth at Lakeview Beach. I'd like to
have the booth staffed between 10AM and 4PM each day. At the booth, we'll have
newsletters, brochures and membership applications as well as additional
information about sailing. For the information booth, I am also looking for a
sun/rain shade to protect our people and our stuff from sun and rain.

Please let me know what you are willing to do to help with this event.

Kelly IV is a 1979 Endeavour 32 sloop. We'll do both daysails and overnight
sailing, including sails to Canada and the Erie Islands. Kelly IV has room for
8 people on a daysail and can host 4 overnight. These sails are usually
relaxing, lazy, easy days on the water. In late June through August, the water
can be very nice for swimming off the boat. We'll take lunch, visit some
coastal restaurants, and enjoy the sailing and the weather. There are over 25
Islands to visit, some within a 2 - 3 hour sail! Check these links and email me

I'm looking for advice on reputable (and, ideally, economical) sailboat repair
services. I've happily acquired an Ensenada 20 in decent condition which I hope
to bring to Lake Arthur soon. Modest fiberglass repair, bottom painting,
rigging replacement are all within my abilities -- but it looks like this season
or next, the 500 lb. iron swing keel will need to be removed, sandblasted,
painted, and replaced. I think this is beyond my ability.

Can anyone suggest a good marina or boat service that could do the job? I'm in
Indiana County but would trailer the Ensenada to Erie, Eastern Ohio, etc. as
necessary.

Thanks for any advice. Feel free to backchannel if it's not of interest to all:

All,

I would like to announce Ken Swetka as the new Secretary for Laser District 19 (Michigan)!  I am guessing that most of you already know Ken fairly well.  If you do not, Ken is a great guy and is about as active in the Laser class as anyone I know right now at the moment.  Ken has recently been responsible for:

1) Our new content management driven website (which allows anyone to can add, edit, delete their own content)
2) Hosting our www.d19laser.com website for at least the last year or so at his expense
3) Organizing a bunch of laser activity (and many other classes) out of Detroit's Crescent Sail Yacht Club and within our area for many years.

Ken is also extremely fast and fun to race with/against :-)!

I have become increasingly busy with my company and do not have the availability I have had in recent years.  After 4 years it is clearly time to take advantage of Kens growing energy and pass the torch.  It was rewarding and fun being a part of all the great Laser regatta's that have been held in Michigan during this time.  I am certain that bigger and better Laser events are in our future with Ken driving for them!

Sincere thanks to Ken for taking on this role and helping to help us all stay organized, active and growing as a Laser District!

Greetings,

Hope the winter is treating everyone well.  The 2009 Laser Grand Prix Regatta is going to be hosted by Cowan Lake Sailing Association which is near Wilmington, OH May 16th & 17th.  Last year the event was held at VBC and something close to 40 sailors showed up!  A big part of the success came from I-lya attendees.  Camping is available and it is a low cost 2 day event with food included.  As gas is still so cheap it would be great to see 40 boats again!  If you're thinking about attending, don't do it alone; bring a friend or the whole family...but not your dog because pets aren't welcome :)
Have a great winter and spring and congrats to Orangebowl participants; you're the ones who will pace the fleet in the years to come!  Attached is the flyer with pricing and other relevant information.  Thanks so much and feel free to foward this to anyone or any sailing associations you wish to!

Hello. I have a sailing dinghy that should find a new home. It is a
sloop rigged fiberglass boat with a daggerboard and kick-up rudder.
The mast and boom are aluminum. The mail halyard is run inside the
mast, and the jib halyard is run outside. There are cam cleats and
fairleads for the jib sheets. The mainsheet is rear-boom mounted with
a center-boom turning block. The standing rigging consists of of wire
cable side-stays (shrouds), and all tangs, pad-eyes, and wire are in
good shape. The running rigging consists of main and jib halyards,
and main and jib sheets. All are woven line and are in fair to good
condition.

When I bought the boat this summer, it came with a bunch of "extras."
I have two rudders, two tillers, two daggerboards, two jibs, and two
mainsails. I also have a small bag of small-boat hardware, including
a bunch of extra shackles, pins and split rings. One jib and one
mainsail appear to be new. I only used the older jib and mainsail,
which are only in fair condition. I was just learning, though, so
they were fine for me. :) I also have a portable, hand-held bilge
pump and a set of oars to go with this boat, but I do not have oar
locks (though the boat has slots for oar locks).

The sticker with the builder's information inside the boat is damaged
and I could not read it. The sail bag says that the sails were made
for what looks like the name "J. L. McReynolds Co., Pittsburgh, PA."

I carried the boat on top of our Subaru Outback Sport (essentially,
this is an Impreza Wagon). I taught myself how to sail in this boat
on a harbor on Lake Huron this summer. It was a great deal of fun.
Under full sail, I easily had it up over 4kts SOG.

I can email pictures to anyone interested. I paid $400 for it this
summer. Best offer takes it.

Hi folks,

Sailing season is coming to an end very quickly, and there are some urgent things to accomplish before the end of this month.

First of all, tomorrow (Saturday, October 4!) is our last sailing/racing opportunity.  It is also our last picnic of 2008.  The races will be more fun than hard edged competition, with advantages given to those with slower boats and less experience.  The Club boats as of a few moments ago are entirely available for use by CSP members, so take a moment and think of reserving one for tomorrow's activity.  If you prefer to crew for someone else, that opportunity will be available as well.

Second, we must plan for the storage of our boats over the winter.  I need CSP members, especially, and also basic/social members to help with this process.  We have at least 10 trailers with boats to haul to winter storage either at Burk's or at the Butler Fairgrounds.  Prior to that, the boats need to be derigged, inspected, cleaned and secured to their trailers for storage.  We have scheduled a work day for both Saturdays...Oct 11 and Oct 18.  The more we get done on the 11th, the less will need to be done on the 18th.

Start time will be at 9:30 AM on each day.  If you have a trailer hitch, I may be asking you to stop either at Burk's (on West Park Road, as you turn off US 19 to come into the park) to pick up a trailer or to meet me at Cooper's Lake to pick up some additional boats.  Detailed instructions will follow to those who RSVP.

Obviously, those who have a trailer hitch will be needed to transport the boats.  Others are needed to store equipment in the shed so that we can find it easily in the spring when we bring the boats back out.  We will provide appropriate equipment and also food and drink for those working on the two days in question.

Please RSVP to me via email or cell phone 412.600.3395

Thanks for your help in making the 2008 Community Sailing Program a success!

As you know, all boats need to go into winter storage by Oct 31st.

We will be transferring our Flying Scots and Sunfish to winter storage

move to storage on those two days, so please set aside time starting
at 9:30 AM each day to assist in this process. We'll meet at Watts
Bay at that time. If you have a trailer hitch, please let us know so
that we can plan how to convoy our boats to their winter homes.

Thanks for your help with this annual task!

Cheers all,

Since we may get a slip in the marina next year, we're turning our brains to the issue of bottom paint--cause we'll need it--and we're newbies in this area.

One big issue is we would prefer not to have to repaint every year.

Anyone out there care to share their experiences with bottom paints in Lake Arthur's muddy waters?

In particular, I would be interested to learn about paints that have performed well over several years and if anyone has any experience with  Pettit Unepoxy.

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Ahoy mateys,

We still have our old outboard:

1999 Johnson 3.3  HP, long-shaft (20"), 2-stroke, no transmission, including gas can, extra spark plug and nearly full bottle of 2-stroke oil.

Runs good.  Pretty much one pull start.

We didn't do much to market it this summer, so we still have it.  We were asking around $500, but have now lowered our asking price to $425 OBO.  We'd like to find a new home for it.

To put price in perspective:
I thought I saw the last of the new 3 HP 2-strokes going for 700-800 last year.  New 4-strokes are 900+.  Our outboard has only been used a little bit, maybe half of the years it's been around.

More information or pictures, contact me off list.

MSC Round the Lake Tour

On Sunday, September 7, MSC members will participate in an “Around the Lake Tour.”   Those who wish to participate should reserve a CSP boat from 10 to 4 on Sunday, or bring their own boats to rendezvous off Watts Bay at approximately 10:15 AM on Sunday.  We will then proceed as a fleet toward Lakeview Beach, sailing past the beach to a position from which we will have a view of the dam, then we’ll alter course toward Bear Run, sail up the south shore of the lake, ducking east to pass Crescent Bay.  If the wind is favorable, we’ll continue east to the edge of the sailing area of the lake; if not, we’ll then sail toward the 528 bridge, before returning to harbor at either Watts Bay or Davis Hollow, depending on your mooring slip.

Those returning to Davis Hollow will fire up the grill at the F dock pavilion and wait for the Watts Bay contingent to put their boats away and drive to Davis Hollow for post-sailing picnicking and refreshment.  Parking in Davis Hollow on the upper lot is available without a parking pass.

Bring your camera and/or binoculars, as well as lunch and something to grill.  I’ll provide the marshmallows.

Saturday, August 30. There will be a "shore school" scheduled for
Sunday afternoons in the early spring to continue discussion of
navigation and charting subjects; VHF radio and Rescue 21; foul
weather tactics; docking, mooring and anchoring techniques; and other
topics of interest.

I'm seeking members with experience in the areas of outboard motors,
anchoring techniques, marine VHF radio operation, crew overboard
recovery, docking techniques etc to help in the presentation of our
seminars on August 24 and August 30. Joe Shields will have his
sextant and charting knowledge, I will demonstrate heave-to
techniques, but I would like to have a variety of people each
presenting on one of the subjects.

Let me know if you can help with the program or if you want to
attend. We will do as much of this program on the water as we can,
perhaps using the club's pontoon boat as a floating lecture hall for
the "shore school" portion of these demonstrations.

Thanks,

Ken Andrews

I'm writing this brief note to encourage you to consider participating in the sailboat races at the Regatta at Lake Arthur this weekend.

Moraine Sailing Club is sponsoring three short races around a triangular course in front of Lakeview Beach on Saturday....Captains' Meeting at Watts Bay at 9:30 AM with races starting at 10:30, 11:30 and 12:30.

We will announce the starting procedures and race conduct at the Captains' Meeting.

Trophies will be distributed to the winners at Lakeview Beach at 4PM.

On Sunday, there will be one race, starting from Neeley's Point and sailing to marks in the vicinity of the 528  and 422 bridges before crossing the finish line near Neeley's Point.  This race will begin with Captains' Meetings at 11 AM at Davis Hollow and at Watts Bay, followed by a start off Neeley's Point at noon.  Boats will have no more than three hours to complete the course.

Trophies will be distributed to the winners at Lakeview Beach at 4 PM.

These races, especially the Bridge to Bridge Race are open to all sailboats, including keel boats and catamarans.  This is an opportunity to test your boat handling and sailing skills in a structured environment.  We encourage all boats to participate.

Applications are available at www.moraineregatta.com or www.morainesailingclub.org and may be downloaded for submission at the Captains' Meetings.

Thanks for your consideration and participation.

As you may be aware, the Regatta at Lake Arthur draws thousands of people to Moraine State Park and Lake Arthur on the first weekend of each August.  This year the event will be held on August 2-3.

Moraine Sailing Club has long been an event provider for the Regatta by sponsoring and administering sailing races on both days.  I would like to use this event as a publicity and membership driver for sailing and for the Moraine Sailing Club.  YOUR HELP is essential to achieving this objective.

This year, we will run up to three races on Saturday, primarily for daggerboard and centerboard boats, (Sunfish, Flying Scots, and the like) although other sailboats (including keelboats and catamarans) are welcome.  These races will be run in front of Lakeview Beach, on a triangular course, with the start/finish line within easy sight of Lakeview Beach.
Captains Meeting will be at Watts Bay at       9:30 AM            with racing starting at 10:30 AM and continuing to estimated finish time of 1:30 PM

On Sunday, August 3, we will run the Bridge to Bridge Race with start/finish line off Neeley's Point and a mark in vicinity of 529 bridge and the other mark in vicinity of 422 bridge and Lakeview Beach area.  Initial direction of race will depend on wind direction at time of start.  We will hold captain's meeting at Davis Hollow and at Watts Bay at 11 AM, with start time for the race scheduled at noon.

On both days, we will have an information booth at Lakeview Beach near the docks there.  We should have two volunteers at the booth during both days, but especially during the sailboat racing events.  Booth should be staffed from 10 AM to 2 PM each day, but I'd like to staff it until 5 PM each day.  The regatta begins, officially at 10 AM.

Volunteers will be needed for the following positions:

Race Committee:
Pontoon Boat
Day Steward
Day Steward Assistant
Time Keeper
Communications
Safety Boat #1
Operator
Assistant Operator
Safety Boat #2
Operator
Assistant Operator
On the water volunteers may volunteer for either or both days.

Information Booth (Lakeview, near the docks)
2 or 3 MSC members able to talk about a sailing and Moraine Sailing Club
I would like to rotate people at the information booth on an hourly basis, so that everyone can have time to enjoy the regatta.

If you have ideas or suggestions as to what we should make available at the information booth, please let me know.

So that I may fill out tentative assignments, please contact me at csp@... or via cell phone 412 600 3395

Saturday evening, many of us may elect to raft up on the water opposite Barber's Point for dinner and to watch the fireworks.

Thanks for your assistance...

Dear MSC sailors,

There is a nice story in The  Herald  (Fox Chapel, Blawnox, Sharpsburg, etc) about MSC and sailing at Lake Arthur. It starts on page 13 of the July 17th issue which is just out. You can buy the paper at the following locations (50 cents):

Good sailing,

Bob Zavos
