I attended the Purple Martin field day today at Zions Crossroads
in Fluvanna County. This was a great event. Our own Ron and Priscilla
Kingston do a lot of the behind the scenes work to make it so great.
The main speaker at this very informal event was Lance Wood, a
riveting spokesman for Purple Martins. I would urge as many of you as
possible to attend this event next year ( I hope it will be repeated)
even if you have no plans to try to establish Purple Martins. There
was a great deal of useful information being dispensed. I attach a few
photos, two of the martin colony and one of a Wood Duck on a nearby
pond. On the evening of July 25 there will be a Purple Martin festival
at Richmond. This is built around a phenomenon in which thousands of
Purple Martins stage in the evening in a hedge row in preparation for
their departure for their wintering grounds in Brazil. Apparently this
is quite a spectacle. If any of you would like more details, or maybe
would like to go as a group from here, let me know. Stauffer Miller
