I am trying to determine if there is enough interest for a Montessori team for the next school year.  This project will require a minimum of five dedicated adults.  A dedicated adult:

·       Commits to a minimum of one afternoon a week in direct contact with students, Sept – Nov.

·       Commits to attending coaches training (July or Sept)

This competition is for students age 9-14.  So far, I have myself and ONE person.  This is GREAT fun and a wonderful team building project.

I put my name in for site council and it turns out it’s a contested election. Who knew! My first campaign since high school. J The Harborviews newsletter coming home this week includes a little box with a ballot (hidden on page 2, I think). My platform: I think Harborview is a great school and I’d like to be an advocate for the school and what’s best for all our kids. FYI: Montessori, I learned, is for governance purposes included in Harborview’s site council. As I think you know, I personally believe Montessori is a good option for our kids to have and the Montessori program can mesh with Harborview in a positive way.

Okay, I know I’ve already sent an email, but I can’t stress how important it is that the district receive feedback on this document.  In one section (E5-A) the percentage of students eligible for specific categories can range only 2% below the district average to twice the district average.

This is a reminder for tomorrows work session on the School District Lottery process to enter the Montessori Borealis program.

The lottery affects JMS families when their children are ready to enter the elementary program.

Historically, the majority of JMS applicants have entered the program, even if it is later in the year (November); however, it is a painful process for JMS families who desire a Montessori Education for their child not to be guaranteed access to this program; and it’s sad for teachers to see Montessori children left out.

• Make your voice heard. Tomorrow you have a rare opportunity!
Do you have questions about how and why the lottery operates? Do you have concerns about how the lottery works? Come to a meeting tomorrow morning in the adolescent classroom at the Marie Drake building, upstairs. From 8-10 am there will be a work session with the Montessori Borealis Site Council and our assistant superintendent Laury Scandling. Bring your concerns – but also good and productive ideas for problem solving. Please look through the lottery procedures prior to the meeting. I know that some of you have attended previous meetings and it can be frustrating when things do not go the way we want, but we have to continue working with district officials and school board to help them understand our children’s and families’ needs and even the programs’ needs; if they want the Montessori program to be a successful district program.

Many of you participated in the surveys former representative Andrea Doll and former assembly member Sara Chambers were working on to determine the needs of young children and families to make Juneau a better place to live.

At a public meeting last week, they presented their findings and participants from various groups serving children and families in our community set priorities and recommendations for developing an action plan.
