Subject: Harborview/Montessori Organizational meeting for parent volunteers

Good morning everyone!

As you know, this year our elementary kids will be attending a whole new school for hopefully one year while Harborview school is renovated.  So I am trying to put together a group of parents who would be willing to help get our school ready for the new year.  I am asking for you to send this email along to all the Harborview and Montessori families that you know to help spread the word about a meeting  the project manager, Sarah Lewis will be having next week.  Sarah is looking for parents who can volunteer for various projects to help get the school ready for our 1st day.   You'll find all that information on the attachment.  It should also appear below, just in case.  There is a lot of little things (okay, some big things too!) that need to be done to help get ready for the first day.  After you read over the list, if you see anything that you may want to add or suggest, let us know!  Sarah is open to ideas and suggestions to make this transition as smooth as possible and limit first day chaos!

In case you aren't sure who Sarah is, she is the project manager who works for CBJ.  She is working with the city, the contractors, the parents and staff to make this a good year filled with on going information and progress.  She also has a 3rd grader in Harborview so she understands the questions that we all have regarding the progress of the renovation and smooth operations of our school.

Teachers and staff have been working to get their classrooms ready and will continue to do so.  I realize alot of us have last minute travel plans before school starts (like myself) but if you have any time or talents to lend a hand, that would be great!

If you are interested in helping, please email me at dg4430@... or call 463-4430.  I will keeping a list of volunteers with their email addresses, cell and phone numbers so we can contact you.

So I hope to see some of you on Tuesday, August 19th at 5PM at the Marie Drake Library!

Thank you,

Dina Gregg

Hello everyone!

I received a phone call from Natalee Routhouse today, asking that the word get out to Montessori familes that we DO have to register our kids at Harborview, even if they are returning students.  THIS IS NOT RELATED TO YOUR CHILDS ENROLLMENT IN MONTESSORI BOREALIS.   It is simply a procedure that needs to be followed when a child changes schools.  Those of us who moved from Harborview to GV had to fill out all of the forms with that move.

In a nut shell, Harborview needs all of the permission forms (walking, internet use, ect) that was needed at GV.  Natalee stated that if parents can’t register before school, they can on the first day of school.  Don’t panic if you can’t do the first day of school either, I’m sure you’ll be contacted.  If you want to call the Harborview office, the phone number is 523-1850.

Cheers!

It would be absolutely wonderful if we could have consistent representation for Montessori with this group.  I’ve already committed to the site council and I can’t participate in both groups.  They are a VERY nice group of people.

Hello All,

Thank you for your interest in fair and equitable access to the Montessori Borealis Optional Program.  We are moving forward with this and are having a meeting scheduled for Noon on Sunday, October 19th at the Juneau Montessori School in Douglas.  Please attend to learn about the process and offer your opinions.  A group approach will be most beneficial.

We would like to keep you informed about the processes that are taking place with the school district.  At this point, we have met with Superintendent Peggy Cowan regarding our Public Complaint and are now appealing to the Board of Education as we felt that their changes to the Montessori Lottery on April 1, 2008 were arbitrary and capricious and contrary to law.  The changes created inequitable access to Montessori Borealis.   If you are interested in pursuing this with us, please attend the meeting.  If you do not want to be included in this group, please email me so that I can take you off our list of advocates.

Thank you all for stepping out of your comfort zones and standing up for fair and equitable education with the Juneau School District

Sincerely,

Stephanie Kohlhase, 523-0617

Subject: Harborview Site Council Meeting for school within a school committee

I attended the Harborview Site Council meeting last night and there were a few things I'd like to pass on. Mostly the issues that touched on Montessori revolved around the use of the turf field. There was a little concern about the perceived lack of supervision on the turf field in the morning. I mentioned that parents are actually watching from cars in an unofficial manner. The council was worried about the liability and would prefer to have a more organized system that would guarantee that there was a parental presence there in the morning. This is a fairly easy issue to ease over, and I would be happy to look for parent volunteers to stand in the turf field from 7:30-7:45am if this committee gives me the ok. The other issue, that was mostly important to just one site council member, was the "fairness" of Montessori "getting" to use the turf field when the rest of Harborview is not. I'm not sure how much of an issue this will turn out to be, but probably is best left alone for now. It may eventually need to be mentioned that the use of the turf field is a necessity not a privilage for the Montessori children.  Mark Choat is going to ask the School Board for some emergency funds to pay for extra help on the playground (there have been some safety issues) and possibly to pay for a school district employee to be present at the busses at the beginning and end of the day. He mentioned that it might be possible to have that person be available for the Montessori busses as well. However, he felt it might be a bit of a long shot.

I think that is important for a Montessori representative to be present at the Harborview Site Council meetings to answer questions and listen for important information. I am not able to be that person, I would be happy to help find a replacement.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want further information.   Please forward this message to those members who I missed.

Thank you,

Alicia Smith

issue has ramifications way beyond any single family. Please attend if you

Education for Life, Education for Peace!

Special "publicly noticed" meeting on Monday, Nov. 3rd, 4:30-5:00 at Riverbend Elementary Library

Hello All,

Just wanted to send an update regarding where we and the BOE remain on this issue.  They could not reach a decision at the last BOE (Board of Education) meeting regarding opening the Montessori Borealis spots... So, the BOE decided to hold a special "publicly noticed" meeting on Monday, Nov. 3rd, 4:30-5:00 at Riverbend Elementary Library.  We think that they have 4 votes to open the spots at the November Trimester for students off the waitlist...  We are keeping our fingers crossed...

Until these spots are open and there are plans to look at diversity and lottery procedures with all three optional programs represented, our issues are still unresolved.

I'm not sure if they will allow public testimony at this meeting, but when the time and date are confirmed, I will update this group again (this Thursday or Friday).  Thanks for all your effort!

Stephanie Kohlhase, 523-0617

November 20th, from 6pm - 8pm at the Harborview Library, in Marie Drake

WE ARE THANKFUL FOR BOOKS!!

In this season of Thanksgiving, we'd like to gather for a community evening to give THANKS FOR BOOKS!! We have a wonderful event planned for Thursday, November 20th, from 6pm - 8pm at the Harborview Library, in Marie Drake. This is organized by SEAFOM and serves as a fundraising event, but is also created to bring families together; all of Harborview and the Juneau community are invited.

This is a Hearthside Books catered booksale, with a wide selection of books for gift giving, children of all ages, gardening and cooking, Montessori philosophy and books by featured local authors. There will be a bake sale and a bonus table with used novels! We plan to have local librarians share suggestions for wonderful childrens' books that are not to be missed!

AND...

from 7:00 - 7:30pm we'll share a very special time with Jean Rogers and Susi Gregg Fowler as they read a few favorites and some as-of-yet unpublished works. Mrs. Fowler is not yet confirmed; keep an eye out for posters and fliers that will hopefully reflect her availability.

Put a child on your lap and a book in your hands! We ask you to come join us for this cozy evening of reading together - bring Mom, Dad, or a friend with whom to read!!! Buy a few lovely books and mingle with fellow book lovers. And, PLEASE, look through your shelves and bring used novels to donate either to your child’s school by Wednesday, Nov. 19th or to the door that night.  We'd like chapter books, young adult readers, and adult novels in excellent condition to sell.

Thank you! Jennifer Ryznar, Catherine Fritz, Kim Hope, Susan Hall, Shauna Murray, John Seagren, Mary Jane Tenney & Lupita Alvarez

The Harborview PTA has received the wrapping paper orders.  Since these orders include frozen food families will need to pick up at the Northland Services Dock (on the channel, across from the hospital).

PTA members will be at the container tomorrow 2:30 – 5:00.  They are trying to accommodate Montessori by being there after our students are released.

Two notices should have gone home, but I haven’t received mine, so thought I’d send everyone an email.

Hello everyone!

I’m coordinating a community service project in Chris’ class.  We are setting up a Treasure Store at Harborview for Christmas; essentially a place for children to purchase gifts for their family.  We are happily copying the Glacier Valley Treasure Store, which many Montessori Borealis students have enjoyed for several years.

For this to be successful, we need products to sell.  We are asking for donations of gently used items, but they must be small enough to fit in a child’s backpack.

Donations can be sent to school, or placed in a collection tub at the Harborview entrance (this should be in place by early next week).

Thank you!

On behalf of the SEAFOM (SouthEast Alaska Friends of Montessori) Board, we thank you for your ongoing support and hope that you will continue to support Juneau's Montessori community for many years to come. Following is a letter from the Board that requests your financial support, and a second document that suggests ways you can help if a financial contribution is not possible for your family at this time.

May the holiday season be filled with peace and joy, and may 2009 be a wonderful year for you!

could the woman that bought the breast pump at our freecycle sale
last weekend contact me? I found some extra parts for the pump that
i think your sister would appreciate. please email me!

Also, whoever took the mobile for the crib accidently dropped the
part that attaches the mobile to the crib in our driveway, i'll put
it on our front porch for pickup. let me know if you need directions
again.

Thanks!
Amy

The Juneau NOW chapter will be holding at Testimony Workshop this
Saturday January 10, 2009 from 10am until noon at the State Capitol
Building in room 124. This workshop is designed to demystify the
process of testifying before a legislative committee so that more
citizens are empowered to engage in the process and focus on protocol,
the legislative process and effective public speaking. Parents, women
and care providers encouraged to attend this free event.

A looming issue is childcare, the costs, the availability, and the
lack of it statewide. In Juneau, several agencies, providers, and
parents have been meeting and discussing the problems and possible
solutions to this growing dilemma. Please note that a house bill HB266
will be reintroduced this session that could lighten the burden for
many working parents. this is worthy of more discussion.

For more information please contact Juneau NOW at nowjuneau@yahoo.com
or Amber King at 209-2011 also please visit www.juneaunow.org.

I hope you can all make it and we can best utilize the great resources
we have here in Juneau!

Dear families,

During the upcoming Hot Salsa – Cool Ballroom event, our MC would like to bring to light, particularly for those who do not have a direct connection with our program, what Montessori Education means to our families.  Most of us, who have been involved in Montessori for a while and have older kids now, have a unique view of how Montessori has influenced our kids. We would love to hear your stories too and be able to share them with others.

You can email me your story, call me or stop by the JMS office and tell it to me and I’ll write it for you.

Remember, Hot Salsa – Cool Ballroom is this Saturday at Centennial Hall – I would like to have your stories right away!

Thank you,

Lupita
