Coming Up!  The “Upscale Garage Sale*” ~ to benefit JuneauMontessori School and the Juneau School District elementary and adolescent classrooms.

Who:  Juneau Montessori School and SEAFOM (SouthEast Alaska Friends of Montessori)

What:  An “Upscale Garage Sale”

Where:  Riverbend Elementary School Commons

When:  Saturday, May 31st, 8 am to Noon

An added attraction…we will have fry bread for sale, free coffee and hopefully some baked items on the day of the sale…details still being confirmed…stay tuned!  Also, flyers are in the process of being made, just waiting for the final confirmation of our space at Riverbend school.

Contact: Cindy Britten to volunteer, 780-6028

I need help with the following:

ü    Setting up the night before, on Friday, May 30th with pricing items, setting up tables, etc.

ü    The day of the sale, volunteers needed to help with selling, taking money, helping in the kitchen, making coffee, and other duties as needed.

ü    After the sale, help in clean up…there is another event happening at 1pm

ü    Please note…those folks who have PIP hours, this is a great opportunity to get some hours in.

ü

Call Cindy Britten, 780-6028

*Definition of Upscale:  what we are looking for are quality items, things you might consider bringing to a consignment shop.  Please, nothing that is stained, torn, worn out, or outdated equipment.  We do not mean to offend anyone, as we all know that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure!  If you have some bigger ticket items you would like to sell, please call me to talk about that.  If you would like to give a portion of your sale to our fundraiser, we can talk.  Also, it would be most helpful if folks can check in at the end of the sale time to see if their items did not sell and then take them back or bring them to Salvation Army or St. Vincent’s.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.  Thank you,

Dear Families,

As we completed our Pansy and Viola Fundraiser, it came to me that it would be nice to start building bridges with the Harborview Teachers.

We are already moving the elementary classrooms on Thursday 29; so here is the simple plan:

On Tuesday May 27, when children come back to HBV on the bus around 3 pm, I will meet them with a load of flowers to bring to each classroom teacher and specialist.

It will take us about 30 minutes to go around the building to every classroom to deliver the flowers.  Parents picking up their children are more than welcome to come along (I would actually appreciate the help of a couple of adults to accompany us to do this delivery)

I have cleared this with Principal Dave Stoltenberg and he appreciates the goodwill gesture.

Please reply to montessori@... to let me know if your child will participate and if you can lend me a hand.

Thank you,

Lupita

Hello,
I've posted two photo albums, one for the 2007 district battle of the
books, 3-4th grade, and one from a 2007 AMP coffee house. We did not
have a working camera for about a year and a half, and I don't always
take good photos to begin with, so I would really appreciate seeing
other people's pictures. I think this is a great place to share
pictures, since it's a closed list and only the montessori community
has access to them.

Stephanie and everyone else,

At last night’s meeting, the lottery issue was not included in the agenda.

It was brought up by Sean Lynch, Rich Conneen & me during the public participation in non agenda items.

We requested them to reconsider their decision of leaving openings in the Montessori program indefinitely for diversity target students.

We also asked to have a review of the lottery process.

Sean reminded them that he is waiting for their legal council to respond to his letter in regards to the legality of their decision making process.

Deb Fagnet (sp?) & David Haas also testified – against our requests.

During Future agenda items, both Marc & Margo requested to bring the lottery issue forward. They did not have enough votes to make that possible.

During the discussion Marc insisted that he had voted for the amendment to the lottery to be applied to all programs, not just Montessori; but they basically told him that the amendment was intended to be applied solely to Montessori and if he did not understand what he had voted for, he needed to pay more attention.

Margo also moved to put on hold the amendment until a full review of the lottery process was done. The motion failed.

That was the end of it.

Sean indicated that if in two weeks he did not receive response from the district’s counsel, he’ll seek a full judiciary review of their process.

We need to get together with JCCJ & the Tlingit program to talk about our concerns about the lottery and create a united front on this issue.

We also need to remind the board that the enrollment is a district responsibility and to meet any district targets, the district needs to address the obstacles that keep people from having access to all district programs, such as transportation or referral system.

Good morning everyone!

As you know, this year our elementary kids will be attending a whole new school for hopefully one year while Harborview school is renovated.  So I am trying to put together a group of parents who would be willing to help get our school ready for the new year.  I am asking for you to send this email along to all the Harborview and Montessori families that you know to help spread the word about a meeting  the project manager, Sarah Lewis will be having next week.  Sarah is looking for parents who can volunteer for various projects to help get the school ready for our 1st day.   You'll find all that information on the attachment.  It should also appear below, just in case.  There is a lot of little things (okay, some big things too!) that need to be done to help get ready for the first day.  After you read over the list, if you see anything that you may want to add or suggest, let us know!  Sarah is open to ideas and suggestions to make this transition as smooth as possible and limit first day chaos!

In case you aren't sure who Sarah is, she is the project manager who works for CBJ.  She is working with the city, the contractors, the parents and staff to make this a good year filled with on going information and progress.  She also has a 3rd grader in Harborview so she understands the questions that we all have regarding the progress of the renovation and smooth operations of our school.

Teachers and staff have been working to get their classrooms ready and will continue to do so.  I realize alot of us have last minute travel plans before school starts (like myself) but if you have any time or talents to lend a hand, that would be great!

If you are interested in helping, please email me at dg4430@... or call 463-4430.  I will keeping a list of volunteers with their email addresses, cell and phone numbers so we can contact you.

So I hope to see some of you on Tuesday, August 19th at 5PM at the Marie Drake Library!

Thank you,

Dina Gregg

Hello everyone!

I received a phone call from Natalee Routhouse today, asking that the word get out to Montessori familes that we DO have to register our kids at Harborview, even if they are returning students.  THIS IS NOT RELATED TO YOUR CHILDS ENROLLMENT IN MONTESSORI BOREALIS.   It is simply a procedure that needs to be followed when a child changes schools.  Those of us who moved from Harborview to GV had to fill out all of the forms with that move.

In a nut shell, Harborview needs all of the permission forms (walking, internet use, ect) that was needed at GV.  Natalee stated that if parents can’t register before school, they can on the first day of school.  Don’t panic if you can’t do the first day of school either, I’m sure you’ll be contacted.  If you want to call the Harborview office, the phone number is 523-1850.

Cheers!

Everyone who is planning to attend the September 9th, JSD Board of Education meeting should be aware that public testimony is not normally accepted for information items; which is where the Montessori Lottery will be discussed. A copy of the agenda is available at:

I have conveyed to the board president (Andi Story) that there are a number of parents who would like to testify.  She will be asking board members, at the meeting, to allow public testimony for this information item.  Testimony is normally limited to 20 minutes total, please be prepared for 1 – 3 minutes of speaking time.

Hello All,

Thank you for your interest in fair and equitable access to the Montessori Borealis Optional Program.  We are moving forward with this and are having a meeting scheduled for Noon on Sunday, October 19th at the Juneau Montessori School in Douglas.  Please attend to learn about the process and offer your opinions.  A group approach will be most beneficial.

We would like to keep you informed about the processes that are taking place with the school district.  At this point, we have met with Superintendent Peggy Cowan regarding our Public Complaint and are now appealing to the Board of Education as we felt that their changes to the Montessori Lottery on April 1, 2008 were arbitrary and capricious and contrary to law.  The changes created inequitable access to Montessori Borealis.   If you are interested in pursuing this with us, please attend the meeting.  If you do not want to be included in this group, please email me so that I can take you off our list of advocates.

Thank you all for stepping out of your comfort zones and standing up for fair and equitable education with the Juneau School District

Sincerely,

Subject: Harborview Site Council Meeting for school within a school committee

I attended the Harborview Site Council meeting last night and there were a few things I'd like to pass on. Mostly the issues that touched on Montessori revolved around the use of the turf field. There was a little concern about the perceived lack of supervision on the turf field in the morning. I mentioned that parents are actually watching from cars in an unofficial manner. The council was worried about the liability and would prefer to have a more organized system that would guarantee that there was a parental presence there in the morning. This is a fairly easy issue to ease over, and I would be happy to look for parent volunteers to stand in the turf field from 7:30-7:45am if this committee gives me the ok. The other issue, that was mostly important to just one site council member, was the "fairness" of Montessori "getting" to use the turf field when the rest of Harborview is not. I'm not sure how much of an issue this will turn out to be, but probably is best left alone for now. It may eventually need to be mentioned that the use of the turf field is a necessity not a privilage for the Montessori children.  Mark Choat is going to ask the School Board for some emergency funds to pay for extra help on the playground (there have been some safety issues) and possibly to pay for a school district employee to be present at the busses at the beginning and end of the day. He mentioned that it might be possible to have that person be available for the Montessori busses as well. However, he felt it might be a bit of a long shot.

I think that is important for a Montessori representative to be present at the Harborview Site Council meetings to answer questions and listen for important information. I am not able to be that person, I would be happy to help find a replacement.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want further information.   Please forward this message to those members who I missed.

Thank you,

Alicia Smith

The complaint filed by Stephanie Kolhase (with support from others) will be
heard by the Juneau School Board at tomorrow night's meeting. This important
issue has ramifications way beyond any single family. Please attend if you
can, to show your support for addressing the equity and fairness issues
around the lottery. Stephanie Allison and Stephanie Kolhase have more
detailed information.

If you have a Montessori button, please wear it. If you have additional
buttons (who has the bag?!) please bring along or give to Stephanie A. prior
to the meeting.

thanks everyone!

Special "publicly noticed" meeting on Monday, Nov. 3rd, 4:30-5:00 at Riverbend Elementary Library

Hello All,

Just wanted to send an update regarding where we and the BOE remain on this issue.  They could not reach a decision at the last BOE (Board of Education) meeting regarding opening the Montessori Borealis spots... So, the BOE decided to hold a special "publicly noticed" meeting on Monday, Nov. 3rd, 4:30-5:00 at Riverbend Elementary Library.  We think that they have 4 votes to open the spots at the November Trimester for students off the waitlist...  We are keeping our fingers crossed...

Until these spots are open and there are plans to look at diversity and lottery procedures with all three optional programs represented, our issues are still unresolved.

I'm not sure if they will allow public testimony at this meeting, but when the time and date are confirmed, I will update this group again (this Thursday or Friday).  Thanks for all your effort!

Stephanie Kohlhase, 523-0617
