The Silver Anniversary of Nordic American Thanksgiving Breakfast (NATB) is
planned for Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Bloomington,
which is located at 7800 Normandale Boulevard, Bloomington, Minnesota. Seating
begins at 6:30 a.m., and the program commences at 7:00 a.m. Tickets are $18 per
person. Special guest speakers include: WCCO Anchor Frank Vascellaro, Gustavus
Adolphus President Jack Ohle, and Lois Quam, Founder and CEO of Tysvar.
Originally founded to help the Nordic community celebrate its common values and

a private, non-profit that provides material and spiritual needs to the
inner-city poor. The second, Minnesota Military Family Foundation, is a
non-profit that provides loans or grants during time of extraordinary financial
hardship to the spouses and children of deployed Minnesota military personnel.
We welcome you and your family and friends to join us in giving thanks. For

Danish Ambassador Discusses Climate Change
Denmark's Ambassador to the United States, Friis Arne Petersen, will offer a
preview of the United Nations' COP15 conference on climate change to be held in
Copenhagen in December. Reducing man-made greenhouse gases that have a negative
effect on our climate system and achieving an international agreement that
combines respect for the environment with living standards and long-term
security of the energy supply in the best way possible presently is the highest
political priority for the Government of Denmark. Learn more about how Denmark
is pursuing a greener future at this interesting conversation. The ambassador
will speak from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, in Cowles Auditorium.
This free event is sponsored by the Center for Science, Technology, and Public
Policy and the Minnesota International Center.

One of Norway's best known traditional music bands, KVARTS (Norwegian
for "quartz"), will be visiting the Upper Midwest from March 28 -
April 5, 2009.
They will be presenting a series of performances and workshops in
Northfield and Fergus Falls in Minnesota, Decorah in Iowa and Mt.
Horeb in Wisconsin.
KVARTS has twice won the Spellemannspris — Norway's version of the
"Grammy" — and their recordings and performances have won high
critical praise.
The musical backgrounds of KVARTS' members range from classical to
contemporary, bluegrass and blues to folk music. This range allows
them to experiment and improvise without weakening their bonds to
traditional folk music. Individually, the members of KVARTS are
recognized throughout Norway for their skills as solo and group
instrumentalists, music educators, composers and arrangers.

Minnesota Film Arts is presenting a series of Swedish short films at
the Oak Street Cinema this weekend and next: The Swedish Experience.
"THE SWEDISH EXPERIENCE" 11 SHORTS From
9 FAMOUS SWEDISH DIRECTORS AT OAKS ST. NOV. 14, 15, 23
Exciting new short works by some of Sweden's most innovative
filmmakers and visual artists.
"The Swedish Experience", screens at Oak St. Cinema for two weekends
starting this Saturday
Nov. 15, 16 and 23 at 3pm.
As a new generation of talents shakes up preconceived notions of what
constitutes "typical"
Swedish cinema, "THE SWEDISH EXPERIENCE" offers moviegoers the
opportunity to
explore the country's vibrant contemporary scene. Shorts in the
program cover a broad range of
styles genres, from traditional animation in "The Looking Glass" to
the near-silent comedy of
"Mr. Pendel".
Works include those from Swedish luminaries: Jens Jonsson (winner,
Sundance 2008; The King
of Ping Pong); famed Madonna cinema biographer Jonas Ĺkerlund; Ruben
Östlund (official
selection Cannes 2008; Involuntary) and Tomas Alfredson (winner
Tribeca 2008; Let the Right
One In.) The Swedish Experience three-image poster series was
specifically created by
Ĺkerlund for the event.
Despite that director Jonas Ĺkerlund is world-renowned for his music
videos - from Metallica to
Madonna, U2 to Maroon 5 - he is really proud of his 1999 short film
"Hidden." Hand-selected
by The Swedish Experience curator Shari Roman, "Hidden" evokes the
powerful Scandinavian
obsession with light and dark with prevailing sexual undertones.
Pernilla Johansson's "Ester" is a comical yet thought-provoking look
at a woman's relationship
with her body. Throughout most of this short film the protagonist
glides through the water, as
her feeling of weightlessness conjures up an Esther Williams-esque
water nymph, but ultimately
her exit from the water allows the audience to see her body as it
truly exists. However, the
woman's confident gait as she leaves the pool leads you to believe she
knows her own
gorgeousness even if it doesn't measure up to society's definition of
beauty.
The Swedish Experience is curated by filmmaker/author Shari Roman. The
initiative is
supported by the Swedish Film Institute and the Consulate General of
Sweden in New York.
THE SWEDISH EXPERIENCE screens Sat. Nov. 15, Sun. 16, and Sun 23 at
3pm. Oak Street
Cinema is located on the corner of Oak St. and Washington Ave. S. just
off the University of
Minnesota's east bank campus. Tickets are $6 general admission, $5
student/ senior and $4
for members. For questions please call 612.331.7563 or 612.331.3134.

> DECORAH, Iowa — For more than 30 years, Vesterheim Norwegian-
> American Museum has been providing exciting and educational tours
> to Norway. In 2009, Vesterheim will offer three different tours to
> Norway—“Folk Art Study Tour to Voss, Rosemaling and Woodworking:
> Norwegian Traditions;” “Textile Study Tour, A Common Thread:
> Textile Traditions of Norway and Sweden;” and “The Fjord Horse:
> Folk Art and Farming in Norway.”
>
> “Because of our connections to artists and museums in
> Norway, we’re able to specialize our tours and take people off the
> beaten path,” said Michelle Whitehill, Vesterheim tour to Norway
> coordinator.
>
> “The Folk -Art Study Tour, for instance, is so
> exciting,” she explained. “It’s packed full of folk art, and
> there are so many special visits to artist’s studios, museums, and
> architectural sites. And of course, the tour includes classes
> taught by three amazing instructors,” she continued.
>
> “And for the Fjord Horse Tour, you can’t get better
> than Phillip Odden,” she said. “He is so knowledgeable and
> passionate about Norway, the fjord horse, and folk arts. Through
> Odden’s family and professional connections, you’ll see a side
> of Norway you wouldn’t be able to see on any other tour.”
>
>
>
> Folk-Art Tour
>
> The “Folk-Art Study Tour to Voss, Rosemaling and Woodworking:
> Norwegian Traditions” is planned for June 17 to July 3 and will be
> led by Vesterheim’s education specialist Diane Weston, who is also
> a rosemaler.
>
> Since the first Folk-Art Study Tour to Norway in 1970, Vesterheim
> has continued to offer American artists the unique opportunity to
> learn from expert Norwegian artists in authentic cultural settings.
> This year, the Folk-Art Study Tour will take place in the town of
> Voss, nestled in the mountains and overlooking Vangsvatnet Lake.
> The classes will be held in the traditional, quaint atmosphere of
> the Voss Folkehøgskule (folk high school), which has inspired
> generations of Norwegian artists.
>
> Outstanding folk-art instructors will teach two four-day sessions
> for rosemalers and woodworkers. Rosemaling instructors will be
> Bjørg Kleivi and Johild Mæland. The woodworking instructor will be
> Torgeir Lirhus. KĂĄre Herfindal will lead an architectural study
> visit in the Voss area, highlighting both historical and
> contemporary building techniques unique to Voss. There will be mini-
> tours after each session that will include visits to various
> museums, studios, and homes to see the best examples of Norwegian
> carving and painting. Also, Astrid Lirhus will give presentations
> of bunads and the fiber arts of the Voss area.
>
> “You will enjoy a community of other folk artists working in the
> Norwegian tradition, learn new artistic techniques directly from
> instructors traditionally trained in the craft, and be immersed in
> Norwegian culture,” said Weston, who has years of experience
> traveling in Norway and guiding Vesterheim study tours.
>
>
>
> Textile Tour
>
> The “Textile Study Tour, A Common Thread: Textile Traditions of
> Norway and Sweden” will be from June 21 to July 2, and will be led
> by Vesterheim’s textile curator Laurann Gilbertson.
>
> The tour will begin in Lillehammer and end in Stockholm with stops
> in Tynset, Røros, and Trondheim in Norway, and Östersund, Falun,
> and Sundborn in Sweden. During the tour, participants will explore
> the similarities and differences in the textile heritage of Norway
> and Sweden. “As we look at textiles—weaving, knitting,
> embroidery, and folk costume—we will consider how traditions came
> to the United States and how traditions have evolved into modern
> times,” said Gilbertson.
>
> Trip highlights include hands-on mini-classes of bunad embroidery,
> knitting, and felting; museum tours with curators; and visits to
> artists in their studios. “There will be something for every
> textile interest,” said Gilbertson.
>
> She continued, “If you are interested in folk costume, there is a
> special program on Gudbrandsdal folk costumes at Maihaugen Museum.
> Knitters will love visiting Selbu, the birthplace of two-color
> knitting. The woven tapestries on exhibit at the Applied Art Museum
> in Trondheim span 400 years! But if that isn’t early enough,
> we’ll see a tapestry made during the Viking Era in Sweden. Also in
> Sweden, we’ll visit illustrator Carl Larsson’s home—his wife
> Karin was just as talented with her design work, embroidery, and
> weaving.”
>
> Gilbertson has been textile curator at Vesterheim since 1991. She
> holds a B.A. in anthropology and an M.S. in textiles and clothing
> from Iowa State University, and she has led three Vesterheim
> Textile Study Tours to Norway.
>
>
>
> Fjord Horse Tour
>
> “The Fjord Horse: Folk Art and Farming in Norway” with Phillip
> Odden is planned for August 21 to September 1.
>
> This tour will start in the productive agricultural area of eastern
> Norway near Hamar and then move to the higher mountain area around
> VĂĄgĂĄ and Lom in Gudbrandsdal, before descending toward the North
> Sea to experience the west coast of Nordfjord.
>
> In this cultural study tour, participants will examine folk art,
> farmsteads, and architecture to gain insight into the changing role
> of the fjord horses in Norway over the years. Not just for horse
> lovers, this tour will be an experience rich in culture, history,
> and art.
>
> Odden, an expert on fjord horses, Norwegian folk art, and travel in
> Norway, will guide this one-of-a-kind cultural experience. Odden is
> the owner and operator of Odden’s Norwegian Fjord Horses in
> Barronette, Wisconsin, where he raises, trains, and sells Norwegian
> fjord horses. Odden and his wife, Else Bigton, who was born and
> raised in Norway, are also woodcarvers and furniture builders in
> the Norwegian tradition. Odden has taught numerous classes at
> Vesterheim in Scandinavian woodworking design and has traveled to
> Norway many times.
