You said that One question about 'N': I understood it to mean "second-most outer string released over outermost string". In the case of my encoding of Bagobo Diamonds, it looked to me like that was the case (in my original step 6). Is it just too subtle of a difference in that case?

In this point, you see high string as the most outer string.
It is not the most outer one. If you extend strings hard, you will find what is the most outer string.
In this case, lower string is L1a-R1a and it takes place of the fact that will be soon the most outer string.
So much as to except knowing what is the most outer or no need to know that,
Easy over release is more recommendable.
N is specialy define the very strict relation on their strings and use it.
You do strict iN on this case, you will get new variation unexpectedly.
