Description

Mission:

To promote high performance kayak (HPK) and surfski paddling in rivers, lakes, and open water in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the surrounding states.

Introduction:

About us: We are a group of about 50(+)paddlers mostly in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana and have formed this group in an attempt to promote what we term Performance Paddling. Many of us are new to the fast boats, though a few members have raced internationally in ICF, surfski, and outrigger. Our roots are in marathon canoeing (indian canoe), bicycle racing, running, and cross country skiing but we all have an interest in going fast in boats. Members paddle ICF K1's, outrigger canoes (OC-1's), surfskis, unlimited racing kayaks and sea kayaks. Traditionally, our area has had lots of river races, and we're trying to slowly branch out onto the larger bodies of water like Lakes Superior and Michigan.

Our concerns and topics are mostly local races but we still chat about nutrition, gear, training, etc.

If you are new to paddlesports, give some thought to your selection of a (new) boat. We like to think that running shoes are to hiking boots as HPK's are to sea kayaks. Each has a purpose. If you are a veteran sea kayaker, you are most likely a novice in a racing boat, so you'll learn a whole new set of skills at the start and we've all been there too.

Paddling an HPK can be intimidating at first. Entry level racing boats are manageable by nearly everyone after just a few hours on the water. The top level racing boats are not. They take much longer to master and should not be your first racing boat unless you've got lots of time and commitment. The HPK's are well worth it, though. So join the group. Send out an inquiring e-mail and connect with a MiPP member in your area.
