Dear MBS members,

I just wanted to update you on 2 new members, Bill and Vicky Stewart.
They will also be joining us in New Orleans. They own an antiquarian book

them to your list of attendees, if you are keeping count!

Remember today is the deadline to register for the conclave and the
hotel. Please let me know if you would like to join us in New Orleans at
tcminibks@... today!

See many of you soon,

Hi! I was referred to this group by a person on the EBay message boards.

A friend of mine has a book that is considered miniature but I have
not been able to find any information on the book at all. There are
full size versions of the book published in different years but this
is one I cannot find any information for the publishing year. I hope
someone here can help!

Here is the info:

A Collection of Hymns for the use of the Methodist Episcopal Church
Principally from the collection of
The Rev. John Wesley, A.M.
1846

What makes this a little different than the other's currently on the
market is it's size. It is a miniature version of the full size book.
It measures: 3.25" x 2.25" and is 1" thick. There is also a name
written in the back in pencil: Charles S. McHenry 19570 There are 623
pages, just like the full size version.

Can anyone help me with information about this book? In the front is
also a commentary about how this is a reprint because the one
published in 1845 was incomplete and there were complaints about
errors on the words. There is no music, another book would have
accompanied this one and would have had all the music in it.

I have done extensive searches on the Internet with no luck. Can find
all kinds of information about the full size one published in 1845 and
the full size one published in 1851 but nothing on this one. Not even
the Library of Congress has this one on file.

Anyone? help? It's for a friend and I would really like to be able to
give her some information on this find. It's in pretty good shape, the
cover is a bit beat up, but nothing major and some foxing on the pages
but all quite readable and easy to turn.

Thanks

Dear MBS Members,

Just a quick note to update the attendance list. I know that some of you are
making personalized keepsakes and need an accurate list. There are 2 people who
will not be making the trip after all. I mistakenly reported that Vicky Stewart,
a new member to MBS, would be coming; only her husband, Bill, will be joining us
in New Orleans. Stephen Byrne has had to cancel his trip due to his wife's poor
health at this time. We regret that he will not be with us and wish Marian all
the best in her recovery. This makes our final count at 72 for those of you
making keepsakes. Even though the deadline for sending keepsakes to Edward has
passed, I encourage those of you who would like to contribute in this area to
bring them with you to New Orleans. If you arrive by early Friday, you can give
them to me to put in the bags; otherwise, you can hand them out yourselves
during the conclave.

If you have any final requests or questions, please contact me via e-mail at
tcminibks@... or phone me at home. My number is in the MBS Yearbook. I look
forward to seeing all of you registered to attend the conclave in two weeks!

Your host,
Tammy

Dear MBS Friends,

All is well in the southeastern U.S. Hurricane Dennis has come ashore in
western Florida, and so far everything is okay in Mississippi. It doesn't
seem that things got as bad as was earlier feared. Edward and I are
working furiously this afternoon to finish up last minute details and are
making great progress this rainy afternoon.

Please add Julian Edison to your list of registered attendees. He has
confirmed his plans to attend the Conclave. We are so happy to have the
distinguished editor of the Miniature Book News join us in New Orleans. I
truly look forward to seeing you all in about 10 days. Keep your fingers
crossed for no further tropical storm activity as our gathering
approaches.

Cheers,
Tammy

Dear MBS Friends,

The time of Grand Conclave XXIII is almost upon us. Some of us will start
gathering in a few days to enjoy New Orleans before the Conclave begins;
some arrive as early as Tuesday. I will arrive Wednesday afternoon
myself. I wish all of you safe travel as you make your way to New
Orleans.

Remember to pack lightweight clothing for out of doors; however, all
buildings are air conditioned and a light sweater or jacket may be called
for if you are cold by nature. Afternoon showers are quite common in the
South, so you may wish to bring a light rain jacket, an umbrella or a
rain poncho.

We are 72 strong, with another 6 joining us for the Sunday evening
banquet. I am looking forward to seeing each of you and to meeting those
of you that I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. I particularly
wish to welcome those making the trip to a Conclave for the first time.

If any of you traveling would like my mobile number in case you need to
reach me, please e-mail me and I will be glad to give it to you.

Take Care, and I will see you later this week!

Bon Voyage,
Tammy

I'm the publisher a two miniature books, Shlemiel Crooks and
Chicken Bone Man.

NewSouth Books, a small independent press in Alabama, has
recently published Shlemiel Crooks as a full-sized illustrated
book for young readers. The illustrations are lush and the book
has received positive reviews in Booklist, School Library
Journal, The New York Times, and other journals and newspapers.
The reviews appear in full or part at the Amazon website below
and the distributor's web site:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/158838165X/qid=1120071840/sr=8-1/r\
ef=pd_csp_1/002-9128885-3656804?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

http://www.shlemielcrooks.com

I hope the full-size version of Shlemiel Crooks will make the
miniature version even more of a collector's item.

Perhaps some of you will also ask your local library to purchase
the NewSouth version so that many kids can enjoy the book.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Anna Olswanger

not compare to the awesome job our photographer/Member, Ray Williamson

them anyway!

And many thanks to all the members who came to partake in the
festivities. Most important, thanks to all of you who volunteered!

Next year I will be exhibiting my collection of designer bound miniature
books at the Grolier Club in New York City. There will be approximately 250
bindings in the exhibition.

The exhibition will open on thursday september 14th, 2005, and close on
November 3rd.

It will be open to the public from 2 to 5 pm, monday through saturday.

There will be a special reception at the Grolier on friday september 15th
for members of the Miniature Book Society and the binders who worked for
me.

This exhibition follows immediately after the 2005 Conclave in Ann Arbor. I
am hoping that many of the Conclave attendees will come to New York to
attend the reception. One member has already said that he and his wife will
be here. He suggested that I try to arrange a block of rooms in a suitable
NYC hotel at an attractive rate. If you let me know that you are thinking
of coming I will see to this.

A book of the collection will be published as the catalog of the
exhibition. I am working on that with Joe Freedman of the Saraband Press. I
was introduced to Joe by MBS member Ed Hutchins.

More information to follow.

Just got my 2005 MBS Miniature Book Exhibition Catalog in the mail and
I just had to write to thank everyone involved in this wonderful
venture. Barbara and Frank and the whole team put together a
top-quality catalog that will serve as inspiration for years to come.
Such crisp, clear photographs and thorough copy. And the books... oh,
the books. Each artist has created such amazing books! Thank you all.

I can't wait to see more in 2006 in Ann Arbor--I grew up in the area,
so it will be a nice visit home. Hope to see you all then.

Have a good day,

Laura

I just received one of the nicest catalogs of miniature books I have ever
seen.

It is "The Miniature Book Collection of Lois Boorman".

It has just (this week) been published by Joshua Heller, a rare book dealer
in Washington, DC.

It includes 396 books, most illustrated in color.

I didn't Lois, but she certainly has good taste in collectng miniature
books. And I'm pleased that her collection is being sold, so others can
have the pleasure or owing these books.

The catalog costs $25, and its a bargain. If you want to buy one you should
get in touch with Joshua at hellerbkdc@....

Dear Friends

My heart goes out to Tammy, and to any other MBS member who has been caught
in this horror.

It is hard to believe that the wonderful beautiful city where we had our
Conclave such a short time ago has been effectively destroyed. I keep
thinking of the driver of the bus tour we took on monday and wonder how "me
myself" is surviving.

When I learn how Tammy and others have fared I will do all I can to help
her and them and I know that others will join me. Pat is already
spearheading such an effort.

Let us all send her our prayers and let us all hope that somehow she has
not been hurt in this disaster.

Hi!

I just got an email from Debbie, Tammys cousin. They are both safe!
Some house damage, though, and no power.

Dear Friends,
Michael Canoso passed away last weekend. There will be no funeral
services as his body was cremated and the ashes will be returned to his home
in Wyoming. There will be a memorial service at Harvard on October 11. I do
not think that an obituary has yet been published in the Boston Globe but
when it appears I shall forward it to all of you.
Sandy and I spent the day with Mike in Cambridge on August 25th and had
a wonderful visit. Mike showed no signs of ill health and his wonderful good
humor pervaded our day with him. Apparently, Mike died the next day.
     We shall miss him.

Bob Bradbury

Dear All,
We are saddened by the news of the death of our dear old friend Mike Canoso.
It was so good of Bob Bradbury to let us all know and we are now in touch with
him about details.
The MBS will miss this great and generous member. Mike was always so keen to
help others, especially new comers.
If anyone is going to the Memorial Service on October 11th at Harvard, would you
please let us know.
Bob has kindly agreed to keep in touch.
Best regards

Ian & Helen's comments about Michael Canoso's gentle nature and
wonderful outreach to newcomers is so true. He was among the first to
welcome us at our initial Conclave. With his keen knowledge of
miniatures and enthusiastic love of books in general, Mike offered help
in our early miniature book-making. Once he even sent a video of a
bookbinding workshop he had attended. We kept in touch with cards and
occasional phone calls and letters in between Conclaves. Mike's warmth
and unpretentiousness was ever evident and future Conclaves without
his presence will just not seem the same. An individual whose
friendship we hold dear... Phil & Anna Morrison.

Dear Friends,

Members of the Society of Czech Bookbinders have followed with horror
the TV news about the devastations caused by Hurricane Katrina. We feel
so sorry for all the people whose lives have changed so unexpectedly by
this natural disaster.

It was only a few years ago when the Czech Republic was stricken by
flood. People whose houses were damaged are still recovering from that
terrible event. It was disaster of a smaller range than Hurricane
Katrina, but we can understand how people feel in such situation.

American bookbinders helped our people, especially those whose damages
were the worst, and we are very thankful for that.

In our experience, what helped most were two things: First: concern of
other people (including real help with saving lives, but also cleaning,
supplying with dehumidifiers, etc.) Second, but with the same
importance: money.

The Board of the Society of Czech Bookbinders has spent a long time
discussing the question of how Czech bookbinders could help American
bookbinders who need help most of all. Unfortunately, we are not able to
bring any help covering those two most important categories. We are too
far away to come and help personally. Money is out of the question,
because the Czech Corona is so low that even the largest amount which we
would be able to collect would be close to nothing in U.S. dollars.

We want to help somehow, but our help would have to be moral support
most of all. We want to send our sympathy in form of something beyond
what is basic.

We are able to supply some art. We would like to send nice graphics and
paintings to bookbinders who are putting their homes back to normal.
Then they will be able to put some nice art on their walls. We would
choose only art done by good Czech artists. We could even frame it and
send without glass. If there are bookbinders who would be willing to
accept this offer, let us, please, know their names.

We are aware that this form of help is not actual help, but it is meant
from the bottom of our hearts - meant to cheer up those people whose
homes are in ruin now.

Thank you for reading this and please, let us know addresses of
bookbinders, or other members of Guild of Book Workers or the Miniature
Book Society, whose houses would use Czech art, after they are in good
condition again.

Jarmila Sobota for the Society of Czech Bookbinders.
