Jon Mayo, MBS vice-president and webmaster, kindly has put the updated Conclave
program plans and other informations on the MBS website. (www.mbs.org) This
will give you a preview before the July Newsletter arrives or if you are not a
member, it gives you the necessary information. The question was raised if
non-members can register as guests? While MBS does not have strict policy on
this, traditionally in the past, guest registrations have been accepted from
family members of MBS members. I suggest, if you want to register at the
Conclave, take out a membership in the Society.(see website) Guest
reservations are accepted for the Sunday night banquet, even for those not fully
registered for the conclave. Tables for the Book Fair can be rented only by MBS
members registered for the conclave.

I was notifies by one of our members that he could not access the
miniature auction for my mini's with the link I gave in the last
email. I would like to therefore suggest to all members that they try
the following:
Go to Ebay and in the search box type: "Miniature Psalms Kabbalah".
This should lead you straight to this auction. In the auction I make
the offer that the winning bidder can buy any or ALL of the mini
books (12 in the picture and hundreds more in my stroage) at the same
opening bid price as the current auction, i.e.$5. It's worth a look!

Dear friends!

We are preparing for the Toronto conclave under unusual circumstances. Among
other previously existing apprehensions, the SARS hysteria really put
Conclave XXI in jeopardy. Fortunately this seems to be behind us, but I don't
know how lasting an impact this had on how many people. The power of
misinformation is monumental ! I can only say to you what I said before, that
there is no risk (and never was a risk) of acquiring SARS on the streets of
Toronto! The city is alive and well and safe and as vibrant as ever. As I am
writing this, 15,000 librarians are here for the American Library Association
meeting. Book people are feisty and don't fall into the trap of mass hysteria!
I would hope the same can be said about members of the Miniature Book Society
.

Why am I writing this? Because I have no indication at this moment, whether
registrations will be around the customary 100 or 25. If the latter is the
case, we can't have a conclave. At this point I have about a dozen of
registrations, most of them came very soon after the April Newsletter
appeared. These are individuals who obviously wanted to express early their
committment and support for the Conclave. The Board never considered
cancellation of the Conclave, nonetheless if attendance would be below a certain
arbitrarily determined critical level, that is exactly what we would have to do.
I am entering the stage where more detailed organizational moves have to be made
and I am reluctant to do that without having some rough idea of anticipated
attendance. I need to have some indications from most of you if you intend to
come to the Conclave.

So, I am asking you to send in your registration forms soon if you intend to
come. If you worry about money, I don't mind if you postdate your cheque to
august 31. The hotel registration, of course, doesn't cost you anything.

Since this E mail group reaches only a fraction of MBS members, I would
appreciate if you could spread this message to others whom you know.

Thanks and best regards:

Paul Devenyi

do want to let you and others (who are also sitting on their hands), know that

we appreciate your having assumed that considerable task. I have a hunch that

Dear Paul and Mary - Please do not get too concerned yet. When we planned
the conclave here in Cincinnati we were operating under the shadow of the events
of September 11th the autumn beforehand. Many people didn't want to travel

Thanks to all of you who responded to my message a few days ago and expressed
support for Conclave XXI and indicated your intention to attend. For those
fainthearted - who were not comforted by personal reassurances - please take
notice that as of today the World Health Organization OFFICIALLY declared that
the SARS outbreak in Toronto is over. I suspect that your media are not as
eager to report this news as they were when SARS cases occurred.

I have a delightful surprise announcement to make. Today I received registration
from Glen Dawson and his daughter Susan! It is wonderful that after the loss
of his beloved wife Mary Helen, Glen is ready to return to the MBS and
conclave circuit. Most of you know, of course, that Glen Dawson is an
extraordinary bookseller, collector, publisher and scholar of miniature books.
And a delightful person as well! Glen's presence will make Conclave XXI special
indeed!

I don't consider it to be a book. It lacks two key elements that make a
book a book --- a cover and pages. And, the fact that it's apparently a
one-off weakens the argument of it being a "book."

In my opinion, it's a sculpture.

I'm very partial to Ed Hutchins' essay, "What is a Book". The Dream Spiral
could definitely be called a scroll - while the text is on copper plates its
layout could certainly be linked to the way text was laid out on scrolls
like the Torah.

To quote Ed's article, "Some people say that a scroll is a scroll and a book
is a codex. I think it is more accurate to say that a scroll is a scroll, a
codex is a codex, and they both have a lot of bookness to them".

You can read his article in its entirety at:

Is a curved assemblage that incorporates a few words a book or an
assemblage? It might be a scroll but in my opinion it is not a book.
Yet, the content of a scroll is a linear sequence structured to be "read" in
a single direction. Here intended direction is ambiguous. So, its a roll not
a scroll. I vote for it being pigeonholed as a rolled assemblage.
A book is a container. This isn't. No distinct cover. No discrete "pages."
Perhaps we are about to see any creative construction of similar scale
marketed as "artists books!"

When M. Vänçi Stirnemann originated Artist Trading Cards, regarding
thickness, he indicated that they should look like "cards."

As they might say in Texas, "Its a rolly-polly paper thang!"

I wouldn't say that a scroll is a book in the sense of the word,
but a predecessor of books.

But I would define the spiral book we are talking about as a book
object.

I want to weigh in on this subject. I don't think this is an inside or
outside of the box issue. The book is a very large and loosely defined medium.
There
are many kinds, sizes and shapes of books, a whole spectrum of things, from
what artists make to what Readers Digest condenses. I think the valuable
discussion is about what qualities of a book does a thing have, where on a
spectrum
of bookness does it fit: from the altered book to literary book, from
letterpress to writing to code, from a shaped leather binding to a metal box,
etc.,
does the thing fit. In pursuing this discussion we will create categories of
books and a scroll can be seen as a scroll book, a paperback novel as a mass
produced book, a book written and illustrated by one person as an artist's book,
etc. My categories need to be better defined and I will appreciate any help in
this regard.

In considering an "artist's" book, our expectation is likely to be that any
conventional use of the word "book" is (because it is "art") unconventional.
So, in this context, the word begins to describe a category of art and to a
lesser degree its function as a book. However, I think that it is reasonable
for the function of the object (book) to be considered even within an
"Artist's Books" genre or art.
A book of matches describes a collection of discrete items. Structurally,
one can even write on each match and push their utility to that of pages...
specifically because there are many of them.
Although it may not be a very good protector, the first "page" of a book can
function as its "cover." So, having a specialized covering is not essential
to book function. The structural characteristic of grouping content
sequentially (page function)... revealing of information over time seems
most essential to book function.
As others have implied, since a spiral form does not present the content in
"chunks," it does not have the feel of a book but does have the feel of a
scroll.
It also might be reasonable to ask why this art work is in a gallery of
"Artist's Books." I can easily envision the same work being included in an
exhibition of paper sculpture.

Interesting discussion.

The image is found here:

http://www.galleriamia.net/ArtBinding7a.htm

When I first saw the Dream Spiral, I didn't question whether it was a book,
because it was labeled as an artist's book. But now I've been thinking
about it some more.

One aspect of "bookness" is this, that a book is designed to be experienced
in the context of time. And further, the artee, so to speak, must interact
with the book by turning the pages or lifting the flap or rolling the
scroll, to see the next part of the book. (This might no hold if there was
a mechanized page-turner that did the work for the viewer.)

In order to see all of the Dream Spiral, the viewer must move around. But
that's true of sculptures too.

So I'm wondering what makes Dream Spiral a book and not a sculpture. Or is
it a sculpture?

The poems on the etched copper plates don't, of themselves, make it a book.
Consider the picture book which has no words. Consider the wall poster
which has words but is not a book.

I'm still considering.

Beth Lee

The Japanese Paper Place is definitely not to be missed if you are going to

they have regular exhibitions. It is heaven for paper people and so much of it
is perfect for miniature books.

Can anyone give us more specific information? Which bus to catch?

Greetings everybody, I have been a member for a while but not had a reason to
post until now. I make miniature books primarily for the dollshouse fraternity.
They are all one twelfth scale but are made as "Open Books". I realise that
this would horrify the purists among you, but never-the-less the books are all
properly sewn and bound and all have leather covers (the leather so fine you can
see through it if you hold it up to the light). Whilst I am here, I invite you

album may be of interest to some of you as is is not an "Open Book".

I'm George Varnyu from the town Ada, in province of Vojvodina. It is in the
former Yugoslavia now Serbia & Montenegro. The town is near the Hungarian
border.
By profession I'm printer and bookbinder, and works together with my wife
Valerie.
Through many years we are printed and bound a lot of miniature books, and after
we are build our miniature book collection. Now we will decide to sell the
collection. Some volumes are sold, but still we have more than a thousand
volumes in collection mostly from Hungary and the artist Mr. Andrusko who is
specialised in wood engravings. Many volumes of him are printed from the
original wood-blocks in letterset.
I found your web site of the miniature books on the internet, it seems that you
are interested in the field of miniature books.
Beside the books which are described and offered for sale in our catalogue, we
have more duplicates of some volumes.
The Catalogue we can send you in PDF-file as an attachment to the e-mail, of
course if you are interested in.
Thank you in advance for your eventually interest.

Sincerely,

going to be a Conclave at all, everything seemed to conspire against us. No we

average, but it will be a classy affair. Those who miss it, will regret it.
There are two weeks to go to the registration deadline and there can be

Registrations to Conclave XXI have been coming with an encouraging pace in the
last week. We'll have a great group of people and a nice mix of dealers,
publishers and collectors. We have several new people, lots of old friends, but
we are still missing a few conclave "regulars". Please remember that you only
have a week and a half left to the registration deadline. The unfortunate delay
of the all-important pre-conclave Newsletter hopefully didn't turn anybody off.
The editor did send out an interim bulletin, most of you probably received it,
although some did not. If you turn to the MBS website (www.mbs.org), on the
Conclave page you will find all the information that would have been in the July
Newsletter. Please communicate this to people you know who have no internet
access. Thanks.
