Dear Members -

This is a common HOAX virus. Please refer to the following web link
for further information:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html

Basically, the file referenced (Jdbgmgr.exe) is really only used by
Microsoft's J++ development language, and thus, if removed, would not
do any harm except for those programming in that language. This is a
HOAX virus message perpetuated by those that hate everything
Microsoft.

The virus alert posted by cabowie is a hoax, There are a lot of those going
around. Do nothing to your computer. The below info is from a virus hoax
site: http://www.snopes.com

Virus name: JDBGMGR.EXE.
Status: Hoax.

Origins: Like the SULFNBK.EXE hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as
the "Bear Virus") attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly
innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems.

In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, a Java Debug Manager program
used by the Microsoft Java runtime engine. This file is included as part of a
standard Windows installation and is not a "virus." The icon for this file is
a graphic of a bear.
If you deleted this file, don't sweat it -- JDBGMGR.EXE is only important to
programmers who use Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 to develop Java programs. Its
absence will not cause your PC to stop working or interfere with your
applications, so if you're not a Java developer, you don't have to worry
about restoring it. Consider the experience a lesson learned about the perils
of believing and acting upon unverified e-mail warnings.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2002]

I got this message about a virus that can produce lot of dammage [sic] to
your computer. If you follow the instructions which are very easy, you would
be able to "clean" your computer.
Apparently the virus spreads through the adresses book . I got it, then may
be I passed it to you too, sorry.

The name of the virus is jdbgmgr.exe and is transmitted automatically through
the Messanger and addresses book of the OUTLOOK.
The virus is neither detected by Norton nor by Mc Afee. It remains in
lethargy ("sleeping") for 14 days and even more, before it destroys the whole
system. It can be eliminated during this period.

The steps for the elimination of the virus are the following:
1. go to START and click FIND
2. in "FILES andFOLDERS" write: jdbgmgr.exe
3. be sure that it searches in "C"
4. click SEARCH NOW
5. if the virus appears (with icon of a small bear) and the name"jdbgmgr.exe"
. don't open it !!! in any case !!!
6. click the right button of the mouse and destroy it
7. emty the recyclage bin

If you find the virus in your computer please send this mail to all the
people in your addresses book thanks.

present
A Big Weekend with Small Books
Instructor: Gabrielle Fox
Binding miniature books is an intriguing challenge as traditional
materials
must be adapted to create pleasing books which open and shut
comfortably.
This two-day workshop will explore and answer your questions about
binding books that measure three inches and smaller. We will sew one
text
block with a rounded spine and cover it with a traditional case modified
to
work well on a miniature. Our second structure is non-adhesive, with
endless
variations, which we will cover in leather, although nearly any cover
material
can be used.
Gabrielle Fox is a bookbinder and conservator. Her work is in many
private and public collections. She is the
author of The Essential Guide to Making Handmade Books and recently
received an Everett Helm Visiting
Fellowship from the Lilly Library at Indiana University. She has been
teaching bookbinding for nearly twenty
years in both England and the US, most recently at Penland School of
Crafts.
Workshop Fee: $150 (GBW members); $165 (non-members)

Dear Neale,

Thank you for your kind email. We are a little sad too, but we now want to
devote all our time to the 'Bibliotheca Thurkowiana Minor'. The good news is
that 'The Catharijne Press' has been taken over by Mrs. Trijnie Duut & Mr.
Gerjan Heij. I persuaded them to join the MBS a.s.a.p. and so they did; they
have contacted Mark Palkovic and he confirmed they would appear in the
directory 2003. Their address is:

Catharijne Press Miniature Books, (slight change in name)
Evertsenlaan 5a,
6881 GA Velp,
The Netherlands.
tel: (+31) (0)26 - 3273125
fax: (+31) (0)26 - 3273126
e-mail: catharijnepress@...

Promising young people, trust they will make a success out of it.
No secrets at all, its all settled now.
Luce and I will of course stay members of the MBS, now only as collectors.

Whenever you want to, you are quite welcome to see our miniature library;
possibly you can combine this with the conclave in Bath next year.
Last saturday I have been into town to check with my colleages if they still
had a copy of the book on the Wittockiana library, but unfortunately I was
not successful. Maybe you should contact them directly and ask for
information. You have the addres. The book is titled 'Bibliotheca
Wittockiana' and is part of the Musea Nostra series (no.38). Year of
publication 1966.

So far the news from The Netherlands, best wishes from Luce and

                                                     Guus.

Susan does everything herself. Picks the text, prints, illustrates and binds.

At my urging, Susan has published a miniature book. It is amazing.

Its called Flowers From Shakespeare. It consists of 18 quotations from
Shakespeare about flowers and her illustrations of the flowers. The book is hand
printed by letterpress, intaglio, linocut and stencil. The edition is 28.The
price is $260.
If you are interested, her address is Susan Allix, 19 Almorah Road, London N1 3

I would like to introduce the first two Mystical Places Press Books of 2003.
I invite you to visit http://www.mysticalplaces.com, which has been newly
updated after much delay.

Yellowstone Autumn
Last October while on a major sales trip in the East and Midwest, I
stopped off at Yellowstone National Park to photograph images for the
Yellowstone book series, Yellowstone Autumn is the third book in this series.
Yellowstone Winter, the 1st book, sold out last year. I have a few left of
Yellowstone Spring, the 2nd book in the series. This series explores our
nations most dramatic and unique park through its wondrous seasonal changes.
With the same format as the Yellowstone Spring and Yellowstone Winter,
Yellowstone Autumn has little surprise images on the back and the front
images stand out from the text, it can be opened book-like or in accordion
fashion. Made from double strips of paper, the background paper has a quote
by John Muir, and the foreground sheet has brilliant images of Yellowstone
National Park in the Autumn. Comes with a ribbon tie with a wooden leaf
charm.

Meadow Rock
Because I was a printmaker before I caught the artist book passion, I
have a number of prints in storage under my bed. One I have one framed in my
bathroom titled ā€œMeadow Rockā€. One day I decided to make a book out of it. I
thought a flag book would be intriguing way to showcase the print. Due the
limited run of the original serigraph prints this is a small edition of 25. I
suggest the optional duo-tone matching clamshell case for a unique
presentation of a typically 2 dimensional media.
The meadow rock image is a hand pulled serigraph printed in 8 colors on
archival printmaking paper by Jill Timm. Meadow Rocks unusual ā€œflagā€ book
structure, was invented by well known book designer, Hedi Kyle.

Thanks to my collectors, last year was a very successful year for
Mystical Places Press. Many editions were sold out. Many more libraries and
collectors across the U.S. have added these books to their collections.
Thank you for your interest, I appreciate your support.

I'm sitting here on a Sunday trying to catalog some items that were donated to
our Rare Book Room, and I need some more information. If anyone can help me
out, I'd be most grateful.

First item is a print by James Yarnell, produced as a keepsake for Conclave V in
1987. Mr.Yarnell is not listed in the current yearbook, and I'm trying to
differentiate him from several other James Yarnell's. Can anyone tell me how to
contact him, or if he is no longer among us, can anyone supply his dates?

The other item is a piece by Ward Schori - a bookmark(?) 4 ½" high x 1 5/8"
wide, with a 4 stanza verse entitled "Plurality". Does anyone know when this
was produced? Was it a Conclave keepsake? Was Mr.Schori the author?

Thanks for any assistance

Edward

Rafina, March 3 2003

Dear M Albert.

Thank you for your letter of February 1 1 which gave me great pleasure and at
the same time a taste of sadness.
Pleasure because all my life I have been working binding books and this great
art offered me a pleasant way of gaining my life, finding the Joy of creation
and understanding the deepest meaning of life- For yes, fee! - a "happy man" and
this precious feeling allows me to work only for pleasure and not money. This is
my way to stay FREE.

On the other hand there is this taste of sadness I mentioned. Your proposal is
of great interest to me but has it come at the right time?
Do I have the right to think or art, creation or other goods of civilization
while the clouds of war, probably a disastrous one, surround my country?

To this dilemma my answer is yes. I accept your proposal. My "aliby" is that I
have not the right to refuse to a man who has the sensitivity to
love the art of bookbinding, an art that delivers things made of peace, beauty
and mind. So please do not hesitate to send me the book you prefer, no matter
what the content is. Each bookbinding is to me like a puzzle I have to deal with
and finally resolve. I touch the book for the first time and the endeavor
begins- My last attempt will drive me to the most preferred binding. What will
the book like exactly? Beautiful or not? I cannot tell. But I can tell that it
will be honest and true.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Truly yours,

Andreas Ganiaris
PS. Instead of some photos I am sending you my book, the workof aliletirne.
Please accept It as a gift.

Just got back from teaching miniature binding at Hollander's in Ann Arbor
where I stayed for three nights at Joan Knoertzer's Bed and Breakfast.

My room was full of miniature and pop-up books!

Each morning we were served a different "literary" breakfast.

Staying with Joan made a rather hectic weekend a delightful visit.

Is anyone interested in purchasing a Danish miniature book? It was offered to
me by a Danish bookbinder. It was pubished in 1942. The title is Rejse Mitt
Kammer. It has several illustrations. It is bound simply, in leather, and it is
housed in a slightly worn solander box. It is very nice, albeit expensive. About
$1,500.

I checked the membership list of this site last night. There are 115 members. I
can't tell for sure, but I think that less than half are members of the
Miniature Book Society.

Every lover of miniature books should belong to the mbs.

Its easy and inexpensive to join. It only costs $30 a year.

And its very rewarding. Members get quarterly Newsletters, the annual yearbook,
the annual catalog of the miniature book competition and an invitatiin to attend
the annual Conclave, iur convention. This year it will be held in Toronto and
next year in Bath, England.

And this year mbs is itself publishing a miniature book, for members only.

Becoming a member is incredibly easy. Just send me your name and address by
return email and ill send the membership application to you right away.

Neale M. Albert
