Hi! Everyone,

I finally got the hang of this list Neale. I ended up starting a new
list by accident. O well, I found you now. Hope to be able to
participate on regular basis. I have a new book in the works right now.
"It's a Small World." Hope people enjoy it as much as I am enjoying
working on it.

Hello everybody!

I was nam,ed in Don Sanford's mesage and I am replying.

Yes, I will be in Koblenz with my wife Milena. I am looking forward to
meet old minature book friends (I attended the first Conclave!) and make
new ones!

I will bring a good collection of minature books to swap/or sell. I am
sure we will have a great time.

I am preparing a bibliography of modern miniature books - about 3.000
items. I am interested in literasture on miniature books and in
catalogues/bibliographies of publishers, since there will be an
introductory essay on the history of miniature books.

Warmest regards to all from

Martin Znidersic

I just got a copy of the Sothebys July Preview.

On June 22 Sothebys will auction a miniature manuscript commissioned by the Holy
Roman Emperor Charles V (1519-56). The binding is original,, in gold and
enamel, set with rubies. It was sold at Sothebys in 1921 for $1,400. The
estimate this time is $170,000 to $250,000.

Dear Everyone:

It's good to be back in touch with MBS again! I've been out of the
miniature-book loop for almost a year now after having left my job at
Dawson's Book Shop to go to law school.

I live in the Minneapolis area and have finished my first year at the
University of Minnesota Law School. I was back out to visit Dawson's during
my winter break, and the shop is pretty much out of miniatures. They have a
tabletop case full of some pretty good little books, but sold off the bulk
of the stock en bloc.

Conclaves are really fun, and I miss being able to go to them. They
coincide with some of the first days of law school. I'll just have to wait
until I'm out to attend Conclave again (provided I can get away from my firm
for a few days!)

Not only did I move from L.A. to Minneapolis, but I moved once again within
the area, so anything in the directory about me is hopelessly out of date.
I can be reached at:

David Reichert
1600 Douglas Drive North, Apt. 302
Golden Valley, MN 55422

I'm curious. Are there any miniature law books out there?

Best wishes,

David Reichert

Dear Neale & Other MBS Members:

I'm pleased to join the group; as publisher of THE MICROBIBLIOPHILE, I'm
curious
about how much the Internet has influenced miniature book collecting.
The existence of huge on-line databases has certainly brought drastic
changes to traditional bookselling, and the ever-expanding group of
on-line auction houses is adding still another twist.

This message will appear as from Mary Lynn, but I'm at a borrowed
computer terminal
where I am running the bookshop this afternoon.

Greetings to All!

The last time I checked with our server, membrane.com, the MBS website got
9000 hits in January of this year. There have been MANY new members gained
from this connection too.

For my own part, I have 4 pages of my Pequeno Press books catalogued online
and links all over the place. The last time I did my taxes I figured out
that over 20% of my book-income is from Internet related sources. IT WORKS!

There are two new miniature books ive just learned about.

Gleniffer Press has just published Hansel and Gretel. There are only 210
copies and many go to the members of the standing list, so if you collect
Gleniffer books you should order one right away.

The second doesnt exist yet. I have the new catalogue of the Whittington
Press. Next Summer they will publish Wine from my Garden, which will include
14 hand-colored wood engravings. It will be co-published by Lorson's Books.

Hello from Greece,
Congratulations to Neale for bringing us closer with the MBS list.
This is my first meesage to the group.
Is anybody aware about miniature books in greek language, under 3 inches ?
All the known so far from Bondy, Spielmann, etc, slightly exceed the limit.
By the way, if any of you will be in Greece this summer, please do not
hesitate
to contact the only MBS member ih this country.
My regards to all.

Dear Greg:
This is my first use of MBS onelist.
I have a little four page leaflet Hickery Dickery Dock printed by William
Cheney in Greek. If you do not have it, I would be glad to mail it to you
as a gift. It measures 2 by 1 3/4 inches.
William Cheney wrote and printed Fleecestreet's Greek in a Nutshell. 57
pages, marbled boards and leather back strip, 2 3/8 by 1 3/4 inches, 1972.
I do not have an extra copy. It is an English language treatise on the
Greek language and has some Greek text.
Yesterday I celebrated my 87th birthday. I have been retired from Dawson's
Book Shop for nearly four years. Last year Mary Helen and i sold our home
of 57 years and moved into Villa Gardens a very pleasant Pasadena
retirement home. We sold or gave away or threw away many of our possesions
but Mary Helen brought with us her collection of miniature books.
I have been trying to help Bob Bradbury in his upcoming publication, a
bibliography of 20th century American miniature books. It will be and
interesting and useful reference tool.
We will not be able to attend the Conclave in Germany, much as we would
like to, but Msgr. Francis Weber is planning a mini-conclave at San
Fernando Mission over Labor Day and that is possible for us.
We once spent several days in Athens and enjoyed it very much.We would be
interested to hear of any miniature books printed in Greece.
We have Barbara Raheb to thank for telling us about MBS@onelist.

I just sent and received a response from our most recent member, "Greg from
Greece" who confirmed he was the individual made a requested to some of his
Greek friends here in the US obtain some of my books for his collection. As
these friends were leaving almost within the week for Greece, I did something
I normally do not do, and allowed them to come to the house for the books.
During the course of the conversation, they indicated Greg was also looking
for a Gocco printer which I just happened to have! This printer was
suggested to the class by my teacher, Carrie Imai, when I taking calligraphy
classes and while I never actually used the printer, and at from that point
in time more than likely never would, I offered to send it along for Greg. I
don't know if he's had a chance to try it.
The world certainly grows smaller and smaller and curioser and
curioser as Alice would say. It's a marvel to reach out and "touch" each
other spontaneously and speedily in this manner. Neale has done us all a
great service.
And now, once again, Glen's friendliness and helpfulness underlines
the generous and giving nature that exists within the membership of miniature
book people and the fact that small really is big in it's own way.
For those of us who are not sojourning to Koblenz, it sounds like
Ralf will keep you very busy with a grand schedule and all of here will be
with you in heart and thought.

Dear Glen,
I am very proud to be the first recipient (within the MBSlist) of message

I wish you HAPPY BIRTHDAY from my hart and may you have the strength

I take the liberty to mail this message to all our members (and not to your

I would also like to thank you for your generous offer to send me the greek
leaflet
printed by William Cheney. I will gladly accept it. By my turn, I will send
to you and
Mary Helen a greek children book written by a 13-years old girl, as a
sample of
the first attempts of the greek publishers in this field. You will notice
that technically
it is far from the quality of the books printed by your private presses (we
don't
have private presses in Greece), but still a good start. It will give an
'exotic fragrance'
to Mary Helen's collection.

Regarding William Cheney's Fleecestreet's Greek in a Nutshell, I feel lucky
to
posses it (thanks to Jon Mayo). It is one of my favourites books. I must
obtain
also its LATIN brother (perhaps Jon still has it available).

My regards to Mary Hellen.

Dear Greg:
I have located several books which belong to the Gocco printer:
	 1.) Gocco Design Encyclopedia
2.) Print Gocco Original Designs (a smal pad of designs, No. S-160)
	 3. A package labeled in Japanese, never opened, which appears to be
			 stencils you can use
4.) Another unopened package labeled Ink Blocking barrier for
stopping
		 the spreading of ink
5.) Booklet entitled Hints for Creating Enjoyable Greeting Cards
using 			 Multicolor Printer "Print Gocco"
6.) Large foldout sheets entitled Original Design for Enjoyment of
creating
		 your own greeting cards
7). Something which appears to be a blue filter sandwiched between a
folded
		 sheet of paper
8.) Print Gocco B6 Set, Owner's Guide (which is essentially what you
		 really need)
I see in a notation I'd made on some paper notes of my own that I purchased
the printer on March 24, 1986! The paperwork that I refer to above was in a
folder in my desk in the studio and I just happened to note it after the
printer was given to your friends. They were in something of a hurry that
day; as I recall they were flying out the following day which was why they
came to the house. There just wasn't enough time to mail them the books
before they left. Since I had done nothing with the printer, I didn't
realize until just recently that all the paperwork was not still in the box.
I will be sending this out to you sometime in the coming week but
because it is rather heavy, I will have to choose a manner of shipment which
is not too expensive. I will let you know about what kind of delivery time to
expect when I check with the post office at the time of mailing.I'm sorry for
this inconvenience. Time does dull the memory.
Jane Coneen does extraordinary things with her printer and I wish you
as well. She, like all the MBS members, is a generous and warm individual
and if you have any questions after receiving the material referred to above,
I'm sure would try to answer. For myself, I'm very happy that there was
someone who could get some use out of the printer inasmuch as I doubt that I
would have pursued it further. Your friends didn't buy the set. It was a
gift when I learned that you had requested that they try to locate such a
printer and it was good that they mentioned it at all since my time with them
was so limited!! I willl take your home address from the e-mail which you
sent to Glen Dawson as the mailing address for the printed material.
	 With kind regards, Barbara Raheb

Dear Barbara,

I am sending you this message through the MBSnet (and not to your personal
address), because I feel obliged to PUBLICLY thank you for the beautifull
present
you have sent me six months ago. For reasons that do not interest our
fellow
readers, I delayed this message by six months, delay for which I apologize.
For those who did not follow our previous correspondence, I wish to inform
them
that, although Barbara and I do not know each other, I received an
extraordinary
present from her (GOCCO printer), sent to me just because I am a miniature
book
hobbist. I apreciate the gesture, which confirms that MBS is something
special.
This was reconfirmed to me by Glen Dawson who, yesterday, instead of
receiving
presents for his 87th birthday, offered presents to others (myself). I
really do not
know how to thank you.
Barbara, I feel again embarassed, since this story forced you to make
expenses
which exceed a normal friendly gesture. But I promise do do my best to
present
you (hopefully soon) the results of your interest, in the form of the first
miniature
book published by a Greek private press.
Best regards.

(generalities that is!)
We all wish you good luck and much success as you proceed with your
first miniature book. We all had a beginning and we hope yours will be one
of lasting enjoyment and fulfillment. Have a great summer. Barbara

I just wanted to say how proud I am to be a member of such a generous group.
Reading the "story" of our Greek friend and his American counterparts just made
me want to cry. I hope he will be publishing soon so the rest of us can enjoy
his talents. Special thanks for the inspiration to Mr. Dawson and Ms. Rehab. I
personally have no talent, so I am dependant on the skills and creativity of you
folks. Truly, "thanks for sharing".

Hi everyone!
I am sure someone here must have the book Louis Bondy wrote about
miniature books. Could that somebody please contact me? I have a few
lines from the german translation and now I need the english original
words for an article.

And if anyone sees that Bondy book for sale, please inform me.

Thanks, Angelika Jaeck

Hello everybody!

In the moment we have only

			 32 registrations

From:

USA, England, Scotland, Czech Republic, Slowenia, Ukraine

For those who want to come and have not registered yet do so because I
think you don't get Hotel rooms after June 30th, because the
"Rhine-in-Flames" is THE event of the year in Koblenz and the Hotel will
give every room away after this date. I checked another Hotel for rooms
at that weekend, and thats what they said: Yes, you can get a room for
2001!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear all,
I had hoped to get this on the web page but haven't succeeded yet. In case
any one wondered, the nominees on the ballot for officers and board members
were elected. There were a couple of write in votes but nothing to change
the results. I will report this at the Conclave but thought everyone might
want to know. Thanks to all who voted.

This list is interesting and pretty useful.

Looking foward to meeting you all in Koblenz!

Best regards,
Angelika
