I am friendly with John Hodgson. He is an English maker of miniatures. I have
several of his pieces in my miniatures collection. He visited with me in NYC a
few weeks ago, and we got to talking about bookcases for miniature books. He is
interested in making these, if there is a market for them. He works in
mahogany. He could make a simple bookcase or a fancy bookcase. He has asked me
for advice. I kinow that i am always looking for really attractive bookcases
for my collection. Please gieve me your input. Are you interested in buying
bookcases? If you are, would you want them to be ssimple? What price range
would interest you?

John helped me with one of my designer bindings. He is also a painter and a
member of the Royal Portraitship Society. I wanted to create a miniature Cosway
binding, and John did two miniature miniature portraits which form part of my
binding.

Hi Neale & All:
It's lovely that John Hodgson helped you with what you needed. But his
furniture is quite expensive unless it's his
resin pieces. Even those are expensive to some people. Does he have a
price range in mind? I'm sure any miniaturist
could make a bookcase....even a very inexpensive one from Aztec. I have
a mini lawyers bookcase that I had made for
my mini books and I sell them as well. If anyone would like to see a
photo of that....let me know. But there are even
less expensive bookcases available. I am not trying to take away
business from Mr. Hodgson. I also know he doesn't really need our
business because he's well known in the mini industry. But I don't know
if that matters to the people
who collect miniatures books solely?
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=80569&a=776367&p=23909985&f=0
lawyers bookcase handcrafted $60.00 or

shows a variety of furniture in 'wrought iron' or inexpensive
woods...etc. No resin though...I don't carry resin furniture at this
time.

If I can be of some help please do let me know. If buying in a large
quantity the prices could possibly be lowered.

From Nov. 15 through Dec. 20 the Visionaire Gallery, an art gallery in Soho, is
going to be exhibiting several hundred of my miniature books. There will be an
opening, to which you will all be invited. But now i need help. They are
writing a press release. Theyre trying to pick a title for the exhibition. The
current title is " XS Libris." Do you understand that? Do you like it? Can
you think of a better title?

Dear Neale,

The title 'XS Libris' is likely a play on the Latin phrase 'Ex Libris,'
which means 'from the library of' While the 'XS' probably denotes the
extra small size of your books [as in the clothing size of XS or XL
(extra large)], it also sounds out the 'excess' of your collection
(several hundred books!). While 'XS Libris' is certainly a novel title,
I am slightly concerned that non-bibliophiles, -semioticians, and/or
-linguists might not 'get it.' That said, perhaps the title should tell
the collection like it is--something like 'Wee Books' or 'Tiny Tomes'
might work. Hmmmmm... What do *you* think the title should be?

In any case, I do wish you the very best with your miniature book show
to which I would prance if I lived in Soho!

Sincerely,

Tanya Adele Koehnke

Hi Neale

My 10-year old son says that it's a terrible title. I don't think so,
but it is a bit obscure. However, I can't think of anything better right
now.

I like the title. I would follow it with : Miniature books from the
collection of Neale...
Something like that. It's OK if everyone doesn't get it , they'll get it by
reading the whole title.

Having thought about it, XS Libris is rather clever, and it's sometimes
better to have a title that works on several levels. Donna's idea makes
sense, and will enlighten the ones who don't get it straight away.

Thank you for all the good comments. Its fun being able to communicate this
way. Visionaire Gallery decided to go ahead with this title. It will work fine
here. The announcement will include an image of a hand holding a miniature
book, with a magnifying glass. And the people who will receive the invitation
are largely fashion oriented people. Visionaire is an avant garde fashion
magazine. The people who visit the gallery are fashion designers, publishers,
graphic artists...models even.

Hi Everyone

I would like to mention that I've recently enjoyed making a new book
called Frosty. I loved the song when I was young and didn't realize that
the song was Frosty the Snowman's first introduction. My book is filled
with images from the original album cover, vintage cards and old photos
of snowmen. Frosty is a special offer on my site until Dec. 5.

I have also recently posted my miniature watercolours on my site. They
are for exhibit only, I do not sell them but I have used other
watercolours in my books.

Neale Your exhibit sounds interesting. If I didn't live on the other
side of the country I would enjoy going to it.

The exhibition is a big success. Several hundred people came to the
opening last night. Including MBS members Ed Hutchins and Alicia Bailey.

I was interviewed by a website team. The interview will be on their site
-- www.themode.tv -- in several weeks.

Most of the visitors to the exhibition were amazed at the diversity and the
creativity and the beauty of the books. Now if only some of them will join
MBS!

Easier crash mark: the Soho reception for XS Libris, and exhibit of
miniature books from the collection of Neale M. Albert, including a
4,000-year-old Babylonian clay tablet and the world's smallest book (0.9
millimeters). Mr. Albert, a mergers-and-acquisitions lawyer by day,
presides over a Miniature Book Society with about 400 members, including
his wife Margaret. She's not as crazy as I am," he said. Every year
they gather in a convention - or a "conclave," as it's known in
miniature-book circles - and talk about their curious hobby. It all
started when Mr. Albert (who is also, naturally, a dollhouse enthusiast)
was trying to fill the teeny-weeny shelves inside a replica of the
library at Cliveden House, the manor outside of London where the Profumo
political scandal took place. Asked to explain his obsession, he said
    simply, There's something about small."

If you get an email with the subject "HI" which mentions a screen saver, DO NOT
OPEN IT. Its a virus. It will take over your email system and send itself to
everyone on your address list. This has come to me in my office more than a
dozen times already today. Luckily it didnt get into my computer because we
cannot open files like this. Dont let it into yours.

Neale

The new exhibition catalogue is being mailed out now. Its great.

The exhibition of my miniature books at the Visionaire Gallery is getting a lot
of publicity. It was listed in this week's Time Out New York with a photograph
of two of the books. Last night Ed Hutchins and I spoke to a group of Students
from the Parsons School of Design. Im hoping that a student may be interested
enough to want to apply for a conclave scholarship.

I met this lady on eBay and she writes her own Tales and makes her
own books. One of her books has been reviewed. See below:
Hi Eileen,

Book magazine "The Bloomsbury Review", has published a review of my
mini book "A Perfect Irony" in their Nov/Dec issue. You can see a
scan of the review on my site at

We were very excited when it came out--it's my first review ever!

Only a year in MBS and the friends we have met there have become very
dear to Ray and I. Surely MBS members are the
most creative, kindest and brightest on earth! Those chat members
who have not yet joined MBS, make it your first New
Years resolution to do so. You will be joining ranks with an amazing
and welcoming crowd of real humans who love the
little.

Having lost loved ones this year in both the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon, I am ever more diligent to appreciate the
life I have and all the wonderful marvels in it - miniature books
especially, but more - YOU! Love especially to Neale Albert, Frank
Anderson, Marjorie Coffey, Eileen Cummings, Miriam Owen, Jim
Delancey, Paul and Mary Devenyi, Mark Palkovic, Kathy
Miller, Diane Weintraub, Donna Thomas, Pat Pisner and Donn Sanford.
Thank you for taking Ray and I into the fold.

In 2002, may you realize a special dream and may the year be
warmed by loved ones and rows and rows of tiny books.

Our address and email have changed. Excite@home went belly up so
email us temporarily at barbarawilliamson@.... If you email
me I will provide our new address.

P.S. The new catalogue should be mailed shortly to all MBSers. Hope
you all enjoy it. For mistakes, contact Jim Delancey... :).

Love to all,
Barbara Williamson
