How could Christies, one of the world's major auction houses, auction Bela's books (or any other major collection) and not notify every miniature book collector (especially MBS members) so as to assure maximum interest?  It's beyond me that they would overlook such an obvious source of potential bidders.  Do they perhaps prefer to sell principally to book-sellers?

Hi, folks,

have you heard about two upcoming miniature book auctions?

Both found on the Christies site (just type in miniature book in
lot search).
- On Nov. 8  the MINIATURE BOOK LIBRARY of Bela Blau, containing
approximately 1,100 volumes is auctioned in Los Angelos, estimate
is     30,000 - 50,000 U.S. dollars for the lot.

on Nov. 17, in London, South  Kensington a MINIATURE BOOK OF
HOURS, use of Rome, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum
[Bruges, circa 1470s]. 75 x 55mm is on auction for an estimate of
2,000 - 3,000 British pounds. There is a nice photo on Christies
web site.

Hi miniature book friends!

I wondered why no one on this list mentioned the auction. I only
stumbled on it by chance. Since the collection was not sold, the
wrong people must have been at the auction. 30,000 $ is a lot of
money for the lot, but then, about 27 $ per book isn't so bad.

The Book of Hours that was in the London auction was sold for 5
times the estimate bid (14.688 sterling pounds).
At the Winterstein auction another Book of Hours from the same
period was sold for 43.300,- sterling pounds. What a difference!

I was at a rare book fair in Berlin a few weeks ago. They had
only a few miniature books, most of them out of my price range.
Strangely enough, the most expensive ones (about 1,500 DM) were
the ones sold first.
I bought "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" published by Rosen,
Venice in 1906. It's a nice little book, but quite worn. Well,
what do you expect after nearly 100 years!
Can somebody tell me why Rubaiyat is so popular with miniature
book publishers? I counted at least 23 of them in Bradbury book.
And I think some others have been published in Europe, too.

There is some kind of virus coming from egroups.
If you get an email with [miniaturebooks]unknown as a subject,
with no text but an attachment, do not open the attachment.
Delete it.

Right after I sent a mail to the list I got one with an
attachment hanson.scr and my email address was written in the
"from" line. Right after it another mail with a warning that a
virus was detected in the attachment of the previous mail and
isolated. I deleted that one, too.

Jane Conneen also got one of these emails with subject unknown.
They are not coming from me!

Hi Angelika,

I too received the virus message, but being inexperienced didn't open
the attachment, as I didn't know it was one! They actually sent me 3 of
the same, but of course after I read your message, just deleted them
without opening them, so hope no harm done.

Re the Omar Khayyam, it was very popular around 1880-1900 in Britain,
and at that time, they also published quite a few books, eg. Scott's
novels, poetry etc in miniature format. I suppose that labour was still
relatively cheap at that time. You will probably have noticed that most
of the miniature Shakespeares were published then, and people had little
book cases for them. Many of them had limp suede bindings in bright
colours. Unfortunately the fashion died out by around 1915 - I suppose
it had something to do with the war, and very few miniatures are printed
by publishing houses these days in the U.K.

Re: the auction houses, we in U.K. were notified by the autioneers about
the Winterstein auction, but did not receive any information about the
others. Perhaps we should advise them of our existence, I'm not sure
which house auctioned the Winterstein collection, Bonhams and Philips
also do book auctions as well as Sothebys and Christies. There is also
one called Dominic Winter Book Auctions.

In response to the virus problem which Angelica identified, i have modified
the rules of our group. From now on, email attachments are not permitted.
If a hacker tries to send a virus attachment to the members of the list it

At Neale's suggestion I sent a fax to Mariana Blau asking if she is willing to
sell Bela's collection one by one or in lots. In any case, one would need a
catalog or a list. I asked her to respond on the e-mail address of our group.

Hi everybody,

I am terribly sorry for causing so much trouble here. I really
did have a virus, one that sneaks e-mails out of your own pc
right after you sent one. Why do people waste their time and
energy programming all the useless viruses?
I didn't know I had one, it is the first one I got in my 5 online
years. My virus protection was quite old and couldn't recognize
the virus because it is a newer one. So I bought another program,
updated it via internet and it repaired all my infected files.
Now my pc is clean and it's safe to send mails again. The virus
is not as dangerous as some are, just causes a lot of trouble but
you can easily get rid of it with out losing your files.
I know some of you have caught the virus, because some e-mail
programs automatically open every attachment! If yours does, try
to find out how you can change that. My sincere apologies to
anyone whos pc was infected.

If you want to be sure that you didn't catch the darn thing, then
send me an e-mail. If I get a sneaky mail right after yours, then
your pc is infected and I'll let you know.
My new virus protection (Norton Antivirus 2000) is wonderful,
easy to use and it works with email attachments, so it will block
out all new viruses that come from the internet!

Now, let's get back to miniature books. I would also be
interested in participating in any deal concerning the Bela Blau
collection!

Kind regards,
Angelika

Hello from a new voice--
It's been most enjoyable reading the ccomments and observations
from other MBS folks these past few months, but then when that dreaded
virus struck I was afraid to open anything for awhile. So Angelika's note
yesterday was most welcomed, and I'm back keeping tabs on all the comments
and currents. For anybody interested, I would appreciate some helpful
guidance or advice. I want to publish a miniature book on The Rosetta
Stone. (In my office I have an exact duplicate, a pressing, of the stone
which I bought at the British Museum years ago.) Does anybody know a
publisher of miniatures who might be interested in taking on this job? I
have the complete manuscript and have bound a sample copy. Any help or
suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dear Donn and all,

Just a brief comment about the Christie/Bela Blau auction.
I'm quite sure dealers were not given any special preference.
I only found out about the auction a couple of days before the event, and I
learned of it from a contact in Japan! Obviously Christie's didn't do a
good job of promoting the event at all.

Cheers to all!

This is just a progress report, in my capacity as the MBS Board's designated
conclave liaison.

Steve Cape and Paul Brown have a very exciting conclave planned for Indy over
Labor Day weekend 2001. Watch for the preliminary program in the January
Newsletter.

I would like to have some feedback about one item. Saturday will be a very busy
day, starting with an early morning annual meeting followed by a trip to
Bloomington to see the Adomeit collection and have some workshops there. The
swap hour would be squeezed in between the return from Bloomington to
Indianapolis and the auction in the evening. Do you think this is too much? Is
there enough interest in the swap meet? I thought in Rutland we got this off to
a reasonably successful start and several people indicated that they would take
part in the next one.Still, I would like to have a general feel about this, in
terms of scheduling.

Another preliminary information: in 2002 we will likely go to California,
perhaps in october, either to Sacramento or to the Asilomar conference center
near Monterey, depending where we can get the better deal. Your conclave host
will be Patty Marchal.

I have been to Sacramento (I used to live in Calif) and I have been to Asilomar.
Asilomar is a uniquely beautiful environment, and the food is great. Asilomar is
not just a place to stay, but a wonderful lasting experience. Set on right on
the beach among beautiful old trees, everything is lush and green, the air
smells salty fresh. Every window view is peaceful and perfect. Asilomar would
make the Conclave an outstanding experience to be remembered for years. I highly
recommend it.

Though Anna & I have not stayed at Asilomar and cannot comment on the
meeting facilities, when it comes to location, we wholeheartedly echo
Jill's poetic description. (And if ever there was a locale to inspire
poetry, the Carmel/Monterey area is it!) We have been to the area a
number of times over the last 30 years and in our opinion, it would
be a truly wonderful location for a Conclave. Asilomar is within a 15
min. drive of Monterey or Carmel. And for anyone wishing to expand
their west coast trip, it is only a short drive to San Francisco. The
weather along the ocean should be ideal at that time of year.
Asilomar would be an inspired choice, in our opinion. Phil & Anna

He has done 17 books. I have the last three, and they are very nice. I can

I just purchased a complete set of the books from Ed. Interestingly, he had
saved no. 1 of each of his books, for sale as a set, and thats what i bought.
I dont know of anyone else who did that.

Maryline was just here tonight. She was visiting her son and stopped by for

I have 110 miniature books that I am trying to get rid of. I have tried
ebay, dealers, and various helpful private individuals. I cannot seem to
find interested parties though. I am hoping that someone can either
direct me toward interested parties or at least help me figure out where
I'm going wrong.

I realize that I'm selling to a small, specialized group. I realize that
I will have to discount my goods because I want to sell them in bulk.
I've found the retail value of 70% of the books through ABE.com and
Bibliofind.com. Then, I averaged the rest and I estimate the books
retail for between $6K and $7K. Where I come from, antiques wholesale
for 50% of retail, so I tried to sell for less than 50%, then less than
40% with no luck. This is less than 2/3 of what they cost 20 years ago.
In fact, no one will make an offer and one dealer wants me to send the
books at my expense and then make an offer. I really don't understand
how a market industry could run like this. That's why I need help. I am
a very motivated seller with seemingly unmotivated buyers. I have no
idea what the specialized market value of these books are except for what
I found on Bibliofind and ABE, but a 60% discount still didn't help.
I'll discount them more if that's all the market will bear, but I'm
afraid of being taken in a market I know little about.

So, I'll send a list of the books to anyone who requests. Please give me
any ideas that you can about how to sell them, who to approach, and what
