A good while back I bought a bunch of the really, really thin covering
leather from a vendor who was selling off supplies to get out of the
business. No contact anymore.

I didn't get the color black, and now I need some. Can anybody please
tell me where I can find this type of leather and what it is called in
the trade? It is strong, but so thin it can be cut with a fingernail.

Thank you,

Randy

Hi Stephen,

Yes! That's where I got it from, at the Ann Arbor Conclave at
Kerrytown Bookfest. I don't know Mark Palkovic, but Mark, if you are
reading this, would you please contact me off list at Randy@...
?

I'm still working on the book. Its a monster and taking forever. Right
now I have a few more colors I am trying to obtain because I want to
experience making all of the significant colors used by medieval
manuscript artists. I also need to photograph the process of binding a
Romanesque book.

I am currently making a 2.9 inch Romanesque version of the Aberdeen
Bestiary from England which was originally made in the late 12th
century and then added to in the 13th. It will have a green leather
cover over 1/4 sawn oak boards with leather sewing supports weaving
through the boards. All 206 pages were massively reworked from the
original shots to make them presentable, and then I very carefully
went in and painted everything gold that is gold in the original book.
I'm using this fine leather on the cover so I can make a raised 3-
dimensional knotwork border. I want to have it done for the Kerrytown
Bookfest in Ann Arbor September 9. If there is time, I may carve a
bone or mammoth ivory plaque for the cover, and it will have tiny
medieval design metal clasps.

Hello,

I have some great news!

Jemma Lewis Marbling & Design are very pleased to announce the launch of 8
brand new marbled designs which we hope you will like.

These new patterns have been specially developed gradually over the past 12
months to compliment our existing range.

The more intricate and precise designs required the manufacture of new
marbling combs, which were all made by us in our workshop.

These designs have developed from our research into intricately combed
patterns like the ‘Fern Marble’ which was popular at the beginning of the 19
th century and the ‘Whirl Marble’, first created in the 20th century. The
technique involves combing in several directions to create these beautiful
geometric shapes.

As with all of our designs these additional 8 are marbled individually by
hand, in our workshop in Wiltshire, UK.

These new 8 patterns are now available to view on our website
www.jemmamarbling.com and are pattern numbers 56 – 63 so please do take a
look.

We continue to offer our many other services including matching papers and
creating bespoke papers to suit your specific requirements.

Current updates and news can always be seen on our Facebook page (find us
under Jemma Lewis Marbling) and our latest newsletter will be sent out in
Autumn 2012.

If you would like any further information about our products or services
please email us on jemmamarbling@... or call on 01225 790560.

We would be grateful if you could share this email or our new range of
designs with any friends or colleagues you think may be interested in our
papers.

We look forward to producing some of our new papers for you!

Kind regards

Jemma

Hi everybody!

I know a lot of you are on your way to the Conclave. I want to mention
a little book I have been making. I wanted it to be done by now, but
it takes as long as it takes, so the premier of it will be the
Kerrytown Bookfest in Ann Arbor, MI on September 9.

I was talking about making a medieval Bestiary. A Besiary is a book
about animals and mythological beasts described and then related to
Christian Theology. Almost every creature described has an
illustration. They were very popular books in the 12th and 13th
centuries. Mine is a near facsimile, and its almost done. It is an
entire authentic Bestiary shrunk down to under 3" high, 206 pages of
text printed at 1440 dpi. I spent over a week digitally working up all
of the pages. Then 3-1/2 more days painstakingly painting artificial
gold onto all of the placed that were gilt n the original (too tiny
for real gilding). The book is bound in a Romanesque fashion, but in
my own Romanesque design (hence not being an exact facsimile). The
binding uses quarter sawn oak boards with the leather sewing supports
laced through them and pegged. There are Romanesque end tabs of
chamois lined in yellow silk and 2 color silk wrapped double endbands
that are real and sewn into the book block and laced & pegged into the
boards. The brass Romanesque clasps are 100% handmade my me, and there
is a raised knotwork border band on the front cover that took over two
days to lace before affixing it to the boards. When finished it will
have a very fine green leather covering that will be tooled.

If that's not enough, I plan to make a medieval lectern for it to
display upon.

I may do more versions of the book (time or commissions permitting),
but the binding is a one of a kind art binding. I'll have pictures of
it when it is finished.

If you or someone you know might be interested in this piece, please
feel welcome to call or contact me at the address below. It was not
done on commission, and I wanted to offer it here to the lovers of
miniature books first before taking it to the broader market. Price is
not set yet, but will reflect a couple of weeks of work.

In the meantime, I hope all who are able to go have a great time at
the conclave!

Randy

Hi folks,

Well it took ages (I started in mid September) but I finally finished
making the miniature Bestiary. I promised you al a link when I had
finished loading it onto my web site. I have lots of pictures of how I
made it. And I have pictures of the display that I made to go with it.
The book is 2.75" tall, and the display is a medieval lectern 11.5"
tall which comes with a model of a waxed tablet and brass stylus.

This book was a TON of work. Leather inlays, gilding, integral double
sewn end-bands wrapped in silk colored threads, clasps hand fashioned
out of brass, and all of that was easy compared to the intricate
interlaced border on the front. That thing alone took 3 days of
fussing (I'll do it a different way if I ever try that again...)

Anyway, here is the set. I hope you enjoy seeing it. It will be on
display next Sunday at the Kerrytown Bookfest, which some of you may
remember from the Conclave being held alongside it a few years ago.

CALL FOR ART

  Reader's Art 13:New Beginnings
  March 8-April 26, 2013

A show of artists books with a focus on new beginnings…political or otherwise.

In this election year, it seemed reasonable to consider new beginnings.
Certainly the politicians are always declaring a "new vision" for America. What
new beginnings might you like to see?

While politically motivated work will have an advantage, all work that deals
with the wide open theme of New Beginnings will be considered.

This is show of ARTISTS BOOKS. All media and structures that can be construed as
a book or refer sufficiently to bookness will be considered. Artists should send

The Codex International Book Fair & Symposium takes place every 2 years and this
year runs from Sunday Feb 10 to Wednesday Feb 13, at the waterfront Craneway
pavilion, Richmond, 1414 Harbour Way South. North of Berkeley I'm told.

See the website for full details - http://codexfoundation.org/2013/2013.html

De Walden Press will be showing its new publication "Storming Shakespeare" (more
information coming in a few days to a website near you, www.dewaldenpress.com)

I believe Peter and Donna Thomas will also be showing their miniature books.

Hello - I'm new to the group.

I collect micro miniature books (I generally try to stay under 1/2") and have
been recently focused on rounding up the various "smallest books in the world"
from over the years. I've done okay but I'm looking for some help...

If anyone here has knowledge of where I can locate "Bilder-Abc" by Egon
Pruggmayer 1971 I would greatly appreciate the help.

Any other tips-offs to sellers with very small books would be great as well. I
do shy away from dollhouse books unless their other extremely well made, older
or have some special traits. I'm especially interested in technically
complicated micro miniatures (i.e. letter press). For instance I don't own
Gleniffer Press' "Old King Cole" but would love to. That seems like a long shot
to get with such a limited pressing.

Does anyone have a photo of Louis Bondy's shop on Little Russell Street? I've
searched all over the internet with no luck.

Thanks!
