There are descriptions of places in Princeton and, as the murder
takes place in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections
at the Princeton University, there is a lot about books and
collectors as well as about procedures and people in the Rare Books
department.

Ann Waldron has written 5 Princeton Mysteries, this is her forth and

Best wishes,

With sadness, I report the passing of long time member, Jim Lorson
(Lorson's Books and Prints), in Fullerton, CA.
Jim did attend the last Conclave (while Joan was "under the weather").
He will be sorely missed.

Everyone is welcome to place ads free, as well as see what we have to
offer.

I'm looking for individuals who knew Jim & Helen Dorsett, and would be
willing to share their experiences with them. I'm writing a biography

Bookbinding Made by Suenonius Mandelgreen. Middelburg, 1757. - 1793 F
106

Brown-carmine morocco, gold-tooled. The covers are filled with
decorations of interlacing ribbons with foliage and flowers in the
resulting compartments, made by many small tools. On both covers is a
circumscription: `A grateful reminder of the honour bestowed on the
5th of the autumn month 1757. On the occasion of the joyful dinner, on
the happy birth of Willem Zelandus van Borssele, whom the Lord will
appoint to the noble seat of his father, for the benefit of country
and church, is the respectful wish of A.L. Callenfels, S. Mandelgreen
and L. Taillefert. D.Z'. Signed at the bottom of the front cover `S.
Mandelgreen fecit'. This bookbinding is a perfect example of the
high quality of the most de luxe bindings in the Netherlands in the
middle of the eighteenth century. It may be considered one of the most
curious items of its time. The decoration on the covers reflects
earlier decorations of bindings in France around 1600. This pattern
was still popular in Germany and Scandinavia in the early eighteenth
century, and it is found on many a Swedish craftsman's `masterpiece',
sometimes with an elaborate circumscription. The maker of this
binding, Suenonius Mandelgreen, knew them very well: he was born in
Uppsala and undoubtedly received his training in that town. It is
exceptional to find the signature of the binder on the binding. No
other Dutch eighteenth-century de luxe binding bears the name of its
maker, except for two other bindings by Mandelgreen. Circumscriptions
of the covers are also rare; there are only a few Dutch bindings,
including a series of ten bindings by Mandelgreen, with such an
elaborate text on their covers. What makes this such a remarkable
binding is the fact that it contains a small bookcase with miniature
books, that can be turned upwards. No other example is known in the
Netherlands, and it can only be compared with some miniature
travelling libraries, notably from seventeenth-century England. But
these have bindings containing a few shelves with small books on the
inside of both covers. Another difference is that Mandelgreen's
binding was not commissioned by a learned traveller for his own use,
but a present from three prominent citizens of Middelburg on the
occasion of the birth of Willem van Borssele, the young scion of one
of the leading Zeeland families. The miniature books contain very
appropriate texts, like the Bible, a history of the Netherlands, and
other works with an educational bias. Mandelgreen worked in
Middelburg between 1736 and 1758. He was mentioned as a printer in
1756 and 1757 in the municipal accounts and was also an auctioneer.
Only a few editions printed by him are known. In 1758 he started
working together with the printers Callenfels and Taillefert for the
publication of the Middelburgse Courant.

miniature book
A book conceived on a very small scale, measuring no more than
three inches along its greatest dimension (height or width), usually
printed in 6-point type or smaller and illustrated on the same scale.
Not uncommon, miniature books include Bibles, almanacs, poetry,
classics, juvenile literature, tokens, etc. Click here to see a page
from a 20th-century miniature atlas (Kansas State University
Libraries). Very tiny books, such as those used in doll houses, are
usually produced photographically. Of interest to collectors,
miniature books have an enthusiastic following in the United States.

deluxe binding (Koninklijke Bibliotheek). An online exhibition of
Miniature Books is provided by the Cushing Memorial Library, Texas A&M
University. See also 4000 Years of Miniature Books (Lilly Library,
Indiana University). For more information, see the Web site maintained
by the Miniature Book Society. See also: miniature edition, miniature
library, and necklace book.

miniature edition
An edition of a book in which the copies are of very small size
(three inches or less in height and width), usually printed in 6-point
type or smaller and illustrated on the same scale. Synonymous with
lilliput edition and microscopic edition. See also: miniature book.

miniature library
In 1800, the English publisher John Marshall issued the first of
several series of miniature children's books in glazed paper bindings.
Each series included as many as 16 separate titles of diminutive size
encased in a small wooden box with a lid to which an engraved paper
label was pasted and an ornamental pediment added to give the
impression of a glass-fronted bookcase. The text in each volume,
usually didactic in intent, served to draw the reader's attention to
details of the illustration on the facing page. The concept was
imitated by other publishers of children's literature in the early
19th century. For examples, see the online exhibition Miniature
Libraries from the Children's Books Collections, courtesy of the
National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In
modern publishing, the term is sometimes applied to a set of
children's books sold as a single unit, often encased in a gift box,
slipcase, or other container (example: The Dr. Seuss Miniature Library
published by Collins in 2004).

necklace book
A small miniature book, usually containing blank leaves covered in
leather or metal, made to be worn about the neck as a pendant
suspended from a chain, ribbon, or thong, sometimes as a piece of
jewelry. To see examples, try a keywords search on the term "necklace
book" in Google Image Search.

Introduction

John Marshall (fl. 1783-1828) began publishing miniature libraries for
children in 1800. Confident, perhaps, that his innovation would
galvanise the children's book market, he produced his first three
libraries 'almost simultaneously'*. The Juvenile; or, Child's Library
was probably the first to appear. Two of its sixteen volumes
('Quadrupeds' and 'Birds') contain advertisements for another
miniature library, The Infant's Library. A third library, The Doll's
Library, also appeared in 1800. Marshall published a fourth library,
The Book-Case of Instruction and Delight (1802), as well as further
editions of The Infant's Library in Latin, German and French, and also
several variations on the theme of miniature libraries including The
Infant's Cabinet Series (1800-1801), The Infant's Letterbox (1803) and
The Doll's Casket (1815?). His remarkable success prompted imitations
from the most prominent names in children's publishing in the early
years of the nineteenth century.

'The children's printer'*

What little we know of Marshall's career suggests he was an astute and
venturesome businessman. Thus, in the early 1780s Marshall targeted
the existing market for Newbery-style stories, imitating John
Newbery's Goody Two-Shoes with such works as Primrose Prettyface and
Goody Goosecap. This type of story had remained popular in the
eighteenth century and was a 'safe' option for a publisher at the
outset of his career. In 1785, however, Marshall claimed to have
discarded these chapbook-style publications in favour of the less
frivolous (and highly profitable) stories of Lady Ellenor Fenn, Sarah
Trimmer, Mary Ann Kilner and Dorothy Kilner. His self-appointed role
as a protector of 'young minds' from 'prejudicial nonsense' impressed
the religious reformer, Hannah More. During the 1790s she engaged him
in publishing her Cheap Repository Tracts but dismissed him in 1798
for 'trying to winkle and wring out of her religious venture every
farthing he could for his own pocket'**. Marshall retaliated by
publishing his own, identical (and more successful) 'Cheap Repository
Tracts', though his dismissal by More no doubt prompted him to look
for an opening for a new venture. It is evident from his next major
publication, The Juvenile; or, Child's Library, that something had
inspired Marshall to adopt a new direction in his career. From 1800
onwards his showcase publications were no longer 'ordinary' books but
toy bookcases, sets of picture-cards and practical teaching kits.

*Marshall often referred to himself as 'The Children's Printer' and to
children as his 'young friends'. (See Display Case 2).

I just got the catalog of an auction PBA is having on december 11 and 12.

There is a very large selection of miniature books on offer there. The
estimated prices are quite a bit lower than I would have expected.

Many of the lots contain numerous books from a publisher or a region.

If these estimates hold this is a rare opportunity for someone to build a
large collection of miniature books.

Napoleon's Book of Fate
Napoleon's Book of Fate : In 1813 Napoleon was defeated at Leipzip.
However he left behind him a "Cabinet of Curiosities" among which a
Prussian officer discovered the following Oraculum. Originally this
Oraculum had been discovered in one of the Royal tombs of Egypt during
a French military expedition of 1801. The emperor ordered the
manuscript to be translated by a famous German scholar and
antiquarian. From that time onwards the Oraculum remained one of
Napoleon's most treasures possessions. He consulted it on many
occasions and it is said to have "formed a stimulus to his most

Horae. Greek. Horae in laudem beatissimæ Virginis ... Septem psalmi
poenitentiales cum Letaniis & orationibus. Adiectae sunt his preculae
aliquot, Johannis Damasceni ...

Hagenau, Johann Setzer, 1528. 1528 32mo. (92 x 69 mm.), ff. [128],
Greek text, printed in red and black throughout; some light staining
at beginning and end; later vellum. Aldus Manutius printed the first
Greek Book of Hours at Venice in 1497/8. He issued it in a miniature
16o. format, the smallest he employed, outside the normal run of
production. Some 16 years later the German printer Thomas Anselm
followed his example north of the Alps with a Greek Book of Hours
printed in similar format (Tübingen 1514). This is another, boldly
printed in red and black, with added prayers.
Aldus may have printed his Greek Book of Hours with half an eye to the
Eastern Mediterranean market but there is no doubt that he also had a
pedagogic purpose. "Politian himself said he had learned Greek by
studying a bilingual Bible, and the familiarity of the liturgical
content to Latin speakers lent itself to use in these books as simple
readers for beginners" (Martin Davies, Aldus Manutius, British Library
1995).
Contemporary signature at foot of title, a Hellenization of the Dutch
name Suiskens. We cannot place him but he was evidently a careful
reader and in a series of marginal notes, draws attention to an
extraordinary confusion in the printing house. The book is a 16mo. in
eights where two gatherings are printed on a single sheet of paper and
then cut apart for folding. Here the second forme to be printed of
gatherings I and K was placed on the press the wrong way around, so
that each leaf of gathering I carries text from gathering I on the
recto and gathering K on the verso, and vice versa. The text is, of
course, complete, but the reader has to jump from the recto of one
leaf in one gathering to the verso of another in the other. We have
not discovered whether other copies replicate this printer's error.

PSALMS.
The Whole Booke of Psalmes.
http://www.ilabdatabase.com/images843/675.jpg

London, for the Companie of Stationers 1621 32mo. ff. (ii) 171 (xix).
Tiny Roman letter, woodcut device on t-p of the Angel of the
Resurrection overcoming death and the Cross, typographical ornament on
verso. Very light age browning, a good clean copy in contemp. English
straight grained natural morocco, covers with double ruled and
dentelle borders gilt, same motif repeated five times across spine,
a.e.g. C18th printed bookplate of Robert Watson on pastedown. A
charming and very rare miniature Psalter in the metrical translation
of Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins and others: the pages are only 1
7/8" x 3 1/8". The Psalms were to 17th C England what the Book of
Hours had been before the Reformation, the principal aid to regular
private devotion and there is no reason to suppose that this edn. was
printed in particularly small numbers. Yet so slight are the chances
of survival of the very small vol. of a modest work (as opposed to the
grand and large) that this edn, is recorded in only other copy, now at
Harvard. It is unusual also to find such heavily read vols. in good
condition, in their original bindings. Robert Watson (1719-1756),
sometime fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Physician to
Westminster Hospital, was described in the Gentleman's Magazine as "a
real scholar, an excellent physician, an admirable philosopher and in
every consideration, a most worthy person". Watson's library labels
appear dated and undated; examples of both are in the Royal College of
Physicians. STC. 2574.5. (single copy) cf. Lee, Early Printed Book

I welcome comments from MBS members on an idea.

Should the annual Yearbook be available ionly online and not in print?

This would (a) save the cost of printing and distributing it and (b) enable
the information to be more up to date, as changes could be entered
instantly.

And it would save several trees.

Ut would even be possible to include photographs of members.

Hi everybody,
Whilst I fully agree with Neale that we would save costs, trees, and have a more
easily updateable yearbook etc.
I do think we need to think very carefully about open access and distribution of
the membership list which contains addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses
etc. Here in UK there are strict rules and regulations about such data being
available.
This information is open to abuse by unscrupulous villains, and we could find
ourselves inundated with even more spam mail if we do not use an effective
filter.

Of course the question arises as to what we do for the members who do not have
access to computers or the internet.

Jim does a sterling job on production of our yearbook, and I am sure that he has
it all set up as a database already. Perhaps when we register our membership for
the year, we should be able to request an e-version of the yearbook as
individuals, members only, and then supply other members with a decent
photocopied version.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of others to this suggestion.
Good wishes to all fellow MBS members

I agree with Stephen Byrnes' excellent comments.

1. We would need to establish a password access system for privacy.

2. We would need to provide for members who do not have, or want, computer
access. We could do this by providing 8 x10 (or smaller) printouts for those
members.

So far the responses I am getting to my email are mostly favorable to the
on-line concept.

Perhaps we could establish a "members only" section on the MBS website, with
password protection. The online directory could be in that section . And members
could use the private section to communicate with the membership.

Hello MB-collectors!

One question:
I found at the title page of
The Microbibliophile, Volume XIV, No.4, September 1990
a very nice picture of a book with a copper coin / medal:
DAWSON'S BOOK SHOP, Los Angeles, 1988
and the title: value vs. worth

Who knows something more about this book???

Thanks

This response is from Mark, who has finds difficulty posting on yahoogroups.
Does anyone else have the same problem?

Hello all,

Yes, Stephen is right. Having our yearbook online is problematic because of
privacy issues. Other professional groups that I'm a member of require login
and password. Of course MBS could do this, but I'm afraid that we'd have to
hire a full-time web master to keep everything up to date, including
password and login maintenance. It's just too much to ask of a volunteer.

Plus, from an archival point of view, it's good to have a written record of
the membership each year in the form of a printed yearbook.

I am going to compile data on the replies.

It would make the compilation more valuable if more mbs members would
reply.

Assume that (1) we could solve the privacy problem and (2) that we would
make printouts available to members who want them.

Would you like to have the yearbook available online ?
