In less than a month it will be Conclave time. I hope the latest
terrorist threat will not keep anyone from attending. So far our
overseas visitors have told me they are coming.

Joan and I are working hard to make this a successful and enjoyable
event. Granted Ann Arbor is not Bath or San Francisco or Toronto but
it does have some charms of its own which I think you will discover.

One change: The miniature book vendors will not be housed
in a separate tent as originally planned but will be housed together
in the regular area. Hopefully this will increase traffic even more.

Yesterday Joan and I put up a display of miniature books for children
at the Ann Arbor Public Library. The books are from Joan's, Susan
Dawson Smith's and my collections. It was getting lots of attention
as we worked. Tomorrow I should be setting up a display at Halle
Library, Eastern Michigan University.

We will have some members from the Detroit Book Club, the Clements
Library, the Bentley Historical Library, and the Kerrytown BookFest
Board at various Conclave events.

If you have not notified Joan of your intent to attend her open house
and plan to do so, please send me an e-mail: tracz@.... We would
hate not to have enough food!

The 2006 Miniature Book Competition Exhibition has been judged by our excellent
jurors.
Three Distinguished Winners have been selected and the catalog is ready for
distribution
at the Miniature Book Society Conclave next weekend, September 8 - 11 in Ann
Arbor,
Michigan. Everyone not attending will be notified as soon as we return from the
Conclave.
This years' winners are a real surprise! This is Ray, Shannon and my last
competition as a
committee and production team. Next year it will be handled by none other than
Neale
Albert and his world class professional team. You are so lucky to have a world
class
collector, photographer and designer handling the 2007 Competition. They will
surpass
what we have done but know that we have LOVED every minute serving today's
amazing
miniature book publishers. We probably made a multitude of mistakes but we made
them
trying so hard to represent your wonderful works of miniature art as best as we
knew how.
We have been so very honored to work for you all. Ray and I will be at the
Conclave in Ann
Arbor and hope to see our dear friends in person. If you haven't signed up yet
for the
Conclave, please contact Twyla Racz asap. The Miniature Book Society is a group
of the
most welcoming, warm and genuinely creative folks you will ever want to meet.
If you
can't come to the Conclave, then just simply join the Society. You will always
be glad you
did. I sure am.

Subject: MBS Grand Conclave and the Fairy Doors of Ann Arbor Michigan
barbarawilli...
Send Email Send Email

Dear Miniature Book Enthusiasts,

First, you folks know me in MBS - Barbara Williamson. I am usually not a nut,
trust this.
This weekend September 8 – 11th, the Miniature Book Society will meet in Ann
Arbor,
Michigan for our Annual Conclave Get-together. I was in a bookstore today in
Maryland
and told the bookseller about the Conclave in Ann Arbor. Her eyes widened
hugely and
she asked me if I had ever been to Ann Arbor before? I answered, "No, this will
be my first
visit".

Leaning over her cash register, she whispered to me (and I am not fooling) that
in Ann
Arbor a mysterious activity has been occurring over the last year. FAIRY DOORS
are
appearing without explanation all over this town. This was confirmed by recent
articles by
NPR and the Washington Post sited below (again, no foolin'). Please, please
take a look at
the links I've included. This is REAL.There are news stories, posters, fairy
door maps and
any number of tiny sightings at:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/21/
AR2006042100588.html

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5393277

http://www.urban-fairies.com/

Needless to say, today I have written via email to the Ann Arbor fairies and to
Mr. Jonathan
B. Wright, inviting them to the Miniature Book Society booths and in particular,
to the MBS
Competition booth. There will be something magically special for the fairies
specifically in
Booth # 90. Just their size… you know what I mean. They have already responded
and
here's what the fairies answered (no foolin'),

"aye books iz grate. yer a chattee one... Im a thinkin' yoo mighta hav a wee
bito trubble
fittin' all tha' in a miniature booksee, eh? mebbee I com an hav a peek-about."

How perfect is this? The news media is bound to catch on… teeny tiny books for
the Ann
Arbor fairy community! Why this was meant to be! My teeny-loving heart is
pounding!

If you live anywhere near Ann Arbor Michigan, you better jump in your car and
drive on
Sunday, September 10, 2006 to the Farmer's Market in Ann Arbor – Kerrytown Book
Fest
from 11 am to 5 pm! Come to the booths sized for fairies, Booths #71 - 92. You
won't be
sorry and neither will they! Children are specially invited! Everyone is about
to experience
the TRUE MAGIC of BOOKS!

days ago ever appeared. I thought in my case it was due to a

Well Thursday is the beginning of the Conclave for those of us
attending Joan's open house. If you are going please do not use the
MapQuest directions because they don't consider the one-way streets.
I have directions Joan has given me if you want to e-mail me for them.
Since parking is limited it might be better if you could double up or

Barbara...Those Fairy Doors while intriguing, are not the primary
reason I'm looking forward to Conclave:

If the quarter I flipped in 1946 had landed the other way, I just
might be calling the University of Michigan
my Alma Mater...
Just discharged from the Navy in late July that year, my best buddy
and I decided to contact a number
of colleges for admission. Why wait, we thought. Two Universities did
accept us. And we finally decided to attend LSU
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Instead of going to Ann Arbor. (Later,
graduated from U.C. , Berkeley.)
Now 60 years later, I finally get to visit the University I didn't
attend...and ponder the question:
Did we make the right decision?

This is a lively 6-page discussion of miniature books, the people who
collect them, and the gathering of collectors (20th Grand Conclave).
Asks, and answers, the question "What's the appeal of a volume too
small to read?" The author notes "the propensity of miniature book
collectors to get photographed flashing Brobdingnagian grins as they
cup whole libraries in their hands." I plead guilty to the
propensity. See "Small Wonders" in the the Sept. issue of Traditional
Home Magazine.

I wonder if anyone can advise me where I may be able to take a couple of
Mini books in order to have them valued?

The books are...
1 David Bryce & Son. Tartan Case and covered miniature 1 inch book of
"English, Scotch and Irish songs" (picture attached) which I understand is
a much sought after book.

2 A 1792 Red and Gold leather bound Miniature London Almanack which is
approx 6cms x 3.5 cms and has the clasp on the front (although the actual
lock is missing)

3 A little 7.5cm x 6cm William Darton 1822 book which is entitled " A
Picture book of Beasts- British and Foreign or An Introduction to Natural
History.

They are all in lovely condition for their ages but I have no idea where to
turn to gain any further insight into them or their value.

by introducing myself.

I make medieval books and individual book style pages using authentic
pre-16th century materials and techniques. You can see some of this on
my web site at www.RandyAsplund.com

I had the pleasure of meeting many of you at the 2006 Miniature Book
Society Conclave in Ann Arbor, Michigan this past September. I am the
one who did the presentation Saturday on how medieval books were made,
and created the Jeanne d'Arc book for Joan Knoertzer. The J d'A book
is featured on my web site with many pictures showing how I made it.

I look forward to the conversations on the list,

Randy
