First off, the Sew-to-be-Seen event tonight is now going to be at THE SWINGIN' DOOR! (For location click here: Swingin' Door)
Breakaway's only heater's out so the inside temperature's the same temperature as outside--not a great environment for a sewing & movie night.

With that, join us at the Swingin' Door TONIGHT (Friday, Dec 11th) from 6:30 - 8:30 to sew reflective material onto your winter gear like your coat, mittens and bag.

A reminder that Saturday's the infamous SANTA CYCLE RAMPAGE RIDE!
We'll be meeting up at Cafe Hollander on Downer Ave at 10am and then riding through the city dressed as Santa & his helpers spreading holiday cheer. The ride will end at Centrall in Bayview around 3:30 where they'll be a raffle and delicious Fat Tire beer. Stops along the way include Lakefront Brewery, Great Lakes Distillery & Kochanski's Concertina Bar.

Yay bike winter!

This morning in a vote of 4 - 1 the Public Works Committee passes to reconstruct Milwaukee's South 2nd Street. This project costs the same as just resurfacing the street would have but will instead narrow the street adding 6 feet of additional sidewalk space on either side of the street, maintain the same amount of parking but add bike lanes and eliminate one travel lane in each direction. With the project there will also be trees and grass planted as well and new pedestrian-scale lighting.

Now the project will go before the Common Council for full Common Council approval. I anticipate that it will pass with ease and the project has the support of the PW Committee, the district Alderman, the Department of Public Works, the Department of City Development, MMSD and countless business owners along 2nd Street.

Tomorrow morning the proposed update to the City's Bicycle Ordinance is going before the Public Safety Committee at 9am in Room 301-B of City Hall. Updating the Bicycle Ordinance will update the definition of a bicycle to allow trikes, recumbents, etc as well as change Milwaukee's mandatory bike licensing to a voluntary program. I'm not anticipating much resistance to this ordinance passing, yet if anyone's available to give a statement, each statement greatly influences the decisions that are made at the meeting.

Once again, horray for today's success for 2nd street!

I vary the PSI based on amount of snow, so that on dry pavement I am riding at 60 psi with the Mount & Grounds, and 80 psi with the A10 (well over the recommended).
And then let air out for better snow traction.  And I'm on my third year with the M&Gs, without any noticeable wear.  Should make 5 years easily.

Last winter was my first winter bike commuting, and like many newbies I bought
the cheapest studded tires available, Innova, which wore down to their nubs by
March, despite the fact I had them on only 50% of the time from January to
March. I switched the studs out with my regular street tires every 3 or 4 days
or so, then would put the studs back on after a fresh snowfall. So my Innovas
didn't see too much action on dry pavement. They still wore down.

I now have the more expensive Nokian mount and grounds. I notice that Peter's
website says that I can leave these tires on all winter long without wearing
them down, that rolling on dry pavement will not wear the tips. Is this true?
Really?!

I also appreciate the typo on the sidewalls of the tires - they left the "N" off
the name so it looks like the tires were manufactured by Nokia, the phone
company. Classic.

Ben's on Lincoln carries some of the Nokians.

The Nokians are the best.  I have the Mount and Grounds on a MTB (now 3 years) and just broke in a pair of the A10s on a Fixie.  The A10 have the same feel as the 37mm  Continental Top Touring 2000s - a heavy tire, but not alot of rolling resistance.  Perfect for black ice days.

I had a pair of Innovas that lasted less than 4 months of winter before the studs were gone.  Make sure you buy tires with Carbide Steel studs.

Yes, Peter's site is the place to go for info on studded tires and generator lights.  I have Nokian 26in W160 mount and ground tires and Schwalbe 700c A10.  Both are like magic when the ground gets icey and both work exactly as described on his website.

I don't think that studded tires offer much advantage in snow, but there is nothing better on ice.  The downside is they are super heavy and very expensive.  But don't waste money on cheaper tires without carbide studs.  I am on my third season with mine and they look like new.  The cheaper studs wear out in a season.

I saw this on a blog

http://commutebybike.com/2009/12/04/how-to-get-everyday-people-to-use-a-bike/

I would have to say that gas at $4 to $5 bucks a gallon would do wonders for
mass transit, walking and biking.

I also find it odd that government gives me tax incentives to drive. Why can I
put aside pre-tax dollars from my paycheck to pay for surface parking in
downtown Milwaukee?

Either get rid of this OR give me a flexible spending account for commuting
related costs. I would prefer the former.

Attention Bike Riders!

2nd street is under consideration for becoming a Complete Street, meaning that with the scheduled resurfacing from the City, they'd stripe bike lanes or improve the bikeability in some other way. Yet, there's very recently been some opposition to this proposal and we need your support to help show support for improving the biking conditions on 2nd.

There are two meetings next week: The first is on Monday night and is a formal DPW hearing held at Bradley Tech High School, 700 S 4th St at 6pm. The second is on Wednesday morning in City Hall Rm 301-B at 9am and is a Public Works Committee meeting.

If you cannot attend these meetings, please consider contacting Alderman Witkowiak of the 12th District: jwitko@... or (414) 286-2221

Here are a couple articles to help bring you up to speed on the issue as well: http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/75351582.html

The city's proposal to rebuild S. 2nd St. by narrowing the roadway and adding bike lanes along with trees, plants and grass to make it more pedestrian friendly has run into opposition from some property owners.
The plan had been pushed and heartily endorsed by the Walker's Point Association (the Fifth Ward Association and Historic Walker's Point have merged).
"It's important that S. 2nd St. in our view be seen as a neighborhood street and not as a thoroughfare, " said Ursula Twombly, president of the association. She favors a "holistic" view of the street that makes rooms for cars, but also one where pedestrians and bicyclists feel comfortable.
"This will visibly change the feeling of S. 2nd St. from a sea of concrete to a place that will be more attractive to anyone looking to invest in the area," she said of the area.
But Mike Sanfelippo, the owner of two businesses on the street - Walker's Point Mobil and the American United Taxi Cab Co. - considers S. 2nd St. a main thoroughfare that takes traffic to and from downtown.
Narrowing the road from four to two lanes will create a traffic bottleneck and detour traffic to other streets, he said, and that will not be good for business. He added that he's "a pioneer on the street" who opened his businesses in the early 1990s.
"I've been here long enough to know what's good for the neighborhood and what's not," he said. "We do not need bike lanes. That's ridiculous. I am totally against this. I will sue to stop it if I have to."
Both sides will get a chance to give their views on the project. Ald. James Witkowiak will hold a community informational session at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Bradley Technology and Trade High School, 700 S. 4th St.
The Common Council's Public Works Committee will hold a hearing on the project at 9 a.m. Dec. 9 at Room 301B of City Hall.
The initial project called for resurfacing the existing roadway from south of St. Paul Ave. to National Ave., a distance of about two-thirds of a mile, said Clark Wantoch, transportation design manager for the city's Department of Public Works. But through informational sessions, some property owners complained about vibration problems, he said.
After some checking, it was found that the vibration problems are attributed to poor pavement and the closeness of vehicles to the property lines, he said.
The city also discovered that tracks from old trolleys were in the roadway, and that a new base would have to be built, Wantoch said. That changed the project from resurfacing to reconstruction. And from a design standpoint, the state now requires that bicycles be accommodated, he said.
The redesign still allows for projected traffic volumes to the year 2030, he said.
"The level of traffic service would be acceptable and provide bike accommodations that would make it safer for pedestrians, allow for a greening initiative to put in grass, trees, plants and a nice canopy on the roadway and still provide parking, a bike lane and thorough way," he said.
From an engineering standpoint, the project is economically feasible and works for all modes of transportation, including pedestrian, bicycle and traffic, he said.
To resurface the exiting 58-foot-wide roadway and replace the base would cost $2,255,000, he said. The cost to reconstruct the roadway to 50 feet wide, which is what's proposed, comes in at $2.2 million, he said.

And his the only business in the area that requires his workers to drive in and out of his place, coming back THERE!!!! for their gas. if he'd let them buy gasoline wherever, he wouldn't have such a traffic "jam" that he is whining about  Most of the other businesses there, bars, restaurants, would welcome walking humans beings, a slower more pleasant street, a street that is very close to a highway and a freeway.

This street is a wreck and needs repaving. First Street is the four lane heavy traffic street that SanFelippo also seems to want Second Street to be, and no bikes - that would be eight lanes servicing his tiny taxi business. That's some ego. Fortunately we bicyclists have state law on our side. I'd say "it's about time...
