I've talkd about Killer B's before, so here's the brief: double
features each night, Friday-Sunday at The EXIT. We'll be hitting the
Sat. 10pm Blob show, if'n you wanna get a posse on, eh? More info
here... http://laughingsquid.com/killer-b-movies-attack-san-francisco/
And then there was BEOWULF! Last chance to see it is Thursday to
Sunday, and then you'll have to wait for the show in NYC next spring.
I finally got out to see Banana Bag & Bodice's "Beowulf" last weekend,
and it did not disappoint. With their biggest budget, their fullest
production, their largest cast, and their longest show, they have
utilized all of those tools, rather than squandered them. And you end
up with a high fidelity, sustained example of a BBB show that's not
quite like any that have come before.
With fantastic performances of acting skills and physical work (both
fight choreography and that very intense quasi-dance highly-studied
movement stuff that BBB actually keep from being pretentious somehow,
so I still love them), beautiful and big live music thanks to maestro
Dave Malloy, and a script that as usual swerves and plays dumb and
disarms without being the bad kind of clever. Everything about this
show really rings true, vital and--it's really my favorite word to
describe them: unpretentious.
Granted, there's no Tecate live onstage this time, but there is the
kind of conversation with an artwork that we are more likely to
associate with a Radiohead song or a Gilliam film or an episode of
West Wing than with "theater" whether of the 'experimental' or
'musical' variety. Well-executed, smart, but with respect for its
audience not just its genre or paycheck.
There's not really time or point in this space to continue into
particulars, there needs to be a sense of urgency because there are
only 4 shows left (Thursday to Sunday) and there's likely a body of
water between you and their east bay stage.
SO go if you can. All the shows are selling out, you may still be
able to get a ticket. But not for long. If you don't you can get
there early (like 7ish) to sign up for the no-show list, which can
actually work. But better to buy before this post is over--

Go straight here for a positive but not the most rave review, but it's
seriously taken, longer and mentions the most people's names....

and see that thing if you can!!
Next up for BBB will be re-staging Beowulf in a 350 seat theater in
NYC. But not til spring of 2009. So see it while you have bragging
rights about yr in-the-know-ed-ness.
