#16) Political Leadership Program at MSU
www.ippsr.msu.edu/mplp
MSU OFFERS FULL SCHOLARSHIP FOR WEEKEND LEADERSHIP
PROGRAM 7/17/2001
EAST LANSING, MI - Michigan State University's (MSU) Michigan
Political Leadership Program (MPLP) is accepting applications for 24
paid leadership training fellowships. MPLP is distinguished as one of
only a handful of multi-partisan programs in the nation. Individuals who
are committed to community service are brought together from across
the state to engage in a public policy and leadership education
curriculum.
The ten month curriculum incorporates practical politics, public policy
analysis and process, personal leadership development, and effective
governance. Since 1992, MPLP has graduated over 280 Fellows who
have used the skills and relationships acquired through the program to
benefit their communities. Graduates take with them the necessary
skills to make sound public policy decisions and be effective leaders
as candidates for political office, as government officials, or as citizen
activists.
Becoming an MPLP Fellow represents a substantial commitment.
Selected participants meet once a month from February to November,
the third weekend of each month. Generally sessions run from Friday
evening through Saturday afternoon. However on occasion, weekend
sessions may begin as early as 1 p.m. on Friday. Five of the sessions
are held in East Lansing and the other five are held in various areas
around the state, including Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Higgins Lake
area and Midland. The Fellowship covers meals, lodging, and program
materials. Participants are responsible for their own transportation.
The innovative program is directed by Lynn Jondahl and Colleen Pero.
Mr. Jondahl, a twenty-two year veteran of the Michigan House of
Representatives, currently serves as Executive Director of Michigan
Prospect for Renewed Citizenship. Ms. Pero is an attorney and serves
as Vice Chair of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority
(MSHDA). Her recent government experience includes serving as
Governor John Engler's Special Counsel and Director of State Affairs.
MPLP is administered and supported by MSU's Institute for Public
Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) within the College of Social
Science. Additional funding for the fellowship program is provided by
Michigan businesses, associations, labor organizations, foundations,
MSU Office of the Provost and College of Social Science, MPLP
alumni, and individual contributions.
Applications are encouraged from any Michigan resident who has
demonstrated a commitment to effective, responsible public policy and
is planning to further that commitment. There are no educational
requirements. The deadline for submitting applications is September
14, 2001.
Select applicants will be interviewed based on their written application
and letters of recommendation. Fellowship recipients will be
announced in mid-November. More information and the 2002
Fellowship Application are available online at www.ippsr.msu.edu/mplp
under upcoming events. Contact the MPLP office for questions or to
receive an application by mail at 517/355-6740. ###

GPMI State Quarterly Meeting: Wyandotte, August 11th & 12th
===================================================
#17) SQM Announcement
from Razy Ziarno, Meeting Manager (
razar@...)
The summer State Quarterly Meeting (SQM) of the Green Party of
Michigan will be held.......
WHERE: Oak Club/Hall....822 Oak St. just east of downtown
Wyandotte, MI. Sponsored by the Downriver Greens chapter.
DATE(S): Sat & Sun. August 11th & 12th
(NOT Aug. 4th & 5th...a change)
LOCATION: South of Detroit, between I-75 and the Detroit River. Oak
Hall is @ 8th & Oak, midway between Northline & Eureka, east of I-75.
Quite a ways east of Fort St., west of Jefferson/Biddle.....
about 8 blocks east of the waterfront park.
(Look at the se Mich. insert on the Mich. Highway map.....
Wyandotte....... the tracks and Biddle shown.). Lots of high-
way construction in the area. Recently, I took Southfield Freeway/M-
39 south to Fort St. (M-85), then a short distance south to Oak St.
Turned left....drove east........... short drive to hit tracks on Oak.
Club/Hall.. left/north side of Oak just east of tracks.
Northbound Southfield/M-39 closed...... also use I-94 or I-75 to
access/exit area.
Best everyone checks with Mich.Dept. of Transportation for
construction zones in area before driving down...lots of
detours in the area.
WHAT: Two-day event.. with breakfast and lunch buffets..and....a
probable pizza party/ and get-together on Saturday evening @
the Oak Hall, with entertainment/DJ & re-freshments. Dancing.
Preliminary starting time..... 9:30 am to maybe 6 pm on Saturday.
Opening time Sunday, probably the same. Closing.... around 4 pm
Sunday.
COST: Still keeping to the $ 10 registration for the entire weekend.
Food, buffets, pizza will be a bit more...BUT...we're getting a $ 2/
per person deal for ALL refreshments...including soda and beer, for
both days! Offhand, you should be able to "do" the entire weekend,
including meeting, food, refreshments, party, dancing, etc. for around $
20/pp. Possibly, the best "deal" around! Lunch & pizza will
feature veggie AND meat items. (No money required until you check
in, on Saturday.).
ACCOMMODATIONS: Motels available in/near I-75 in the area, but
none real close to venue......unfortunately. We're surveying such for a
weekend "deal" price....will forward motel contact information in the
near future. Again, venue location can easily be reached by freeway
from a relatively large area; meeting attendees could feasibly overnight
a good distance from meeting locale, and still access in a reasonable
time. Check with your local motel chains to determine availablity near
Wyandotte.
(Those Greens living in se Michigan may want to generously offer a
place to "crash" for visitors....... we'll make such available when known)
We'll also schedule beginning times for meetings a bit later to serve
those driving in any distances. Carpoolers are encouraged, of course.
AGENDA: At least 2/3 or more of the overall meeting time will be
reserved for speakers, open discussions, networking, outreach, and
"breakout"/group sessions similar to last SQM in Old Mission
Peninsula. Some timely speakers (grassroots organizing, alternative
voting systems, state/local "offices" etc.) and a general focus toward
"what/ where" the Green Party will be in latter 2001 and 2002. AND......
growing the party and being a relevant "player" in upcoming election(s).
Important "stuff."
We'll try to get the business items over the first part of Saturday....then
focus on the "more interesting" items.
VENUE DETAILS: The Oak Club/Hall is spacious, holds a lot more
people than previous SQM venue, has air-conditioning, large parking
lot, and lots of tables and chairs, including large round tables...
ideal for group meetings. Nice place....a well-known wedding and
"party" place in Wyandotte...noted for serving excellent food. The
Club/Hall staff will be serving us!
Downtown Wyandotte close by....waterfront park maybe 1/2 mile
away.
All members welcomed, of course, along with others interested in
becoming "Green." We're hoping that local chapters are all represented
at this meeting.... especially the lower Michigan ones. As usual,
wives, husbands, mates, friends, are welcome....not only the meeting
but, especially, for the Saturday night party. (Dogs? Doubtful, but I'm
still checking!)
And...we have lots of wall space.....(and masking tape)....can use
such for putting up Green-related banners, signs, flyers, etc.
Advertise your local chapter, and anything happening in your area.
BUSINESS ITEMS: In an effort to reform our business segment(s) in
the meeting....we're asking that Green Party members forward their
bylaw(s) proposals, resolution proposals, and any general business
items in advance of the meeting.
PLEASE SEND A HARD COPY OF SUCH..TO ME...
(along with an E-mail....from those having E-mail availability) no later
than July 23rd, 2001. After running such through our Bylaws and
Platform Committees.....relevant proposals will be included in a printed
packet, to be mailed to "probable" attendees at least a week prior to
the SQM. In other words, if you let me know you WILL attend above
meeting.......send your regular mailing address with the "yes...I will
attend" notice and you'll get a meeting packet.....business items and
agenda...prior to the meeting. In that way, with attendees having
advance information, we hope to conduct our business a bit more
efficiently and maximize available time.
Now, individual members will still be able to submit "new business"
items AT the meeting proper, but only the "advance" items will be
printed in the packet, and will receive priority consideration at the
meeting.
WARNING: With the recent concealed weapons legislation now
effective...July 1..... an alert, I guess, is necessary. The Oak Club/Hall
has a food & liquor license, and a public facility serving such.......
illegal to carry any concealed weapons inside the building.....ILLEGAL!
So....IF YOU'RE ATTENDING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
(Not to soon to commit!). If you're not attending, please consider
donating a few $$ to the cause... the Green Party of Michigan needs it!
And, give us some idea if you'll be signing up for lunch buffet, and for
the Saturday night party... (pizza & beer & soda & dancing/ music
....numbers needed for food orders.)
And, of course, any volunteer help will be welcomed greatly! If you
want to bring any pro-progressive, pro-Green literature, from a favorite
group you support, we should have table space for such. But, let me
know in advance. Ditto any ideas for "special" events that'll add some
mix to the SQM.
One last thing...I promise. Time for Green Party re- newals for a lot
of our members. You'll be getting notices from Dawn McClain in the
mail....please consider "re-upping" and get one or more of your
friends to join.
Thanks much.... hope to hear from all of you...... feel free to E-mail
or call anytime.....especially with ideas and suggestions......

#18) A Note on Breakout Groups at the SQM
from Rick Stalhut (
stahlhut@...)
Hello MI Greens!
At the next State Quarterly Meeting, the plan is to have several hours
for small group "breakout" sessions. The idea is to give you an
opportunity to caucus around issues you care most strongly about.
We will be using the "Open Space" process--whomever has a topic
they care about, and is willing to convene a group, puts the subject of
the group on a piece of paper and announces it to the group. Once all
the ideas are up, everyone will have a chance to choose which group, if
any, they wish to attend. Groups may choose to split or combine as
seems appropriate.
The groups that formed at the last meeting were Media, Process
(meetings, consensus, etc), Living Wage, Energy Conservation,
National Green Involvement, and Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). [Note: if
any of these groups continued to work between SQM's, please let me
know what's up.] These may or may not appear again, depending
upon interest.
Each group will conduct business as they see fit, except that they will
provide a brief report back to the main group. There is no requirement
that this group continue to work between SQM's, although we hope
that the process will help identify important issues where there is
enough energy for this to happen.
Be thinking about your issues. This is a great chance to find
like-minds from around the state.

#20) 8/9-8/12/01 Chicago: Campus Greens National Convention
www.campusgreens.org
CAMPUS GREENS TO HOLD NATIONAL FOUNDING CONVENTION
AT UNVERSITY OF ILLINOIS-CHICAGO
Student Activists and Campus Organizers Coming To Chicago From
Around The Country To Participate
MADISON, WI—Capping a successful first seven months of
organizing, Campus Greens will hold its founding convention at The
University of Illinois at Chicago, August 9-12. An estimated 500
students from 150 schools are expected to attend.
The convention will consist of issue, identity, and skill-building
workshops, panel discussions on the future of the Green Party and
progressive politics, a plenary session that will determine national
organizing strategy, a major rally open to the public, and a direct
action for affordable housing organized in coordination with the Rodgers
Park Action Network and other progressive Chicago-based
organizations. Ralph Nader, Winona LaDuke, Medea Benjamin, Jello
Biafra, Mike Feinstein, Patti Smith and countless other Green Party
and progressive activists will participate in the convention.
“We plan on using this convention to help young Green Party activists
build the skills they need to help build the Green Party, and to directly
address questions of how the Green Party can position itself as the
party of the progressive left, particularly on issues of poverty and racial
justice,” Development Coordinator Lauren Schwartz (Columbia, '04)
said today.
Campus Greens was founded in the wake of last November’s election
by students involved with the historic Students for Nader/LaDuke effort.
Its mission is to engage members of campus communities in Green
and progressive third-party politics—as activists, campaign workers,
and candidates. The Campus Greens national office is currently
located in Madison, WI, where twelve college students are working as
staff or full-time volunteers to organize the founding convention and lay
the groundwork for a sustainable national organization.
“Students made up the bulk of support for the Green Party in last
year’s campaign,” Field Organizer Brian Sandberg (UMass, ’01) said
today. “Our emergence, together with the likely formation of the Green
Party of the United States later this month, gives the Green Party the
institutional structure it needs to grow and grow fast.”
For information about student groups coming to the convention from
your area of the country, contact Brian Sandberg of the Campus
Greens Field Team at 608.251.3529.
