No. I was in contact with Ira about 6 weeks ago. Everything seemed OK. I
wonder if someone started selling CD's of the contents of his web site, and
he got kind of pi&&ed about it, and shut down his site. This is my guess.

Its a shame that a useful resource like Ira's is not on line because
of something like what you describe.

Perhaps people who put things like that on line should require those
who download material to
jump through the "I accept the terms" hoops so provide some sort of
legal agreement as to who owns
what, and what can be done with the material. Some freeware authors,
even though they give away
the software, nevertheless have it protected under copyright, so no
one can legally do other things with
the software without permission.

I posted the announcement on the Phila. Area Computer Society web
page.

http://www.pacswinsig.org/forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=921

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to make the festival
this year.

Please note that I included lots of good KIM-1 literature with the
KIM-1 I donated. You guys may want to display it for the show.

Good luck.

MARCH frequently asked questions -- last updated 3/30/2006

1. What is MARCH?

MARCH is a user group for people who enjoy using antique/vintage computers. Our
name is an acronym for Mid-Atlantic Retro Computing Hobbyists. Our club's legal
name has an "Inc." on the end because we're incorporated as a non-profit group.

2. I'm a nerd and live somewhere between Connecticut and Virginia, yet I never
heard of you before.

That's because we are relatively new. We began in early 2005 as a Yahoo
discussion group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/midatlanticretro/), became an
informal club in the springtime, and didn't become a legal entity until late in
the year. Now it's 2006 and our ship is moving at full-steam! We also have a
web site which is VERY under contruction. It's at both www.midatlanticretro.org
and www.marchclub.org.

3. So I have to live in the Mid-Atlantic part of the U.S. to join?

Nope. That description just conveys where our members and activities are
concentrated. In fact, we have members from around the country. We have a few
more in the extremes of New Hampshire, Pittsburgh, and the Carolinas. But as I
said, we're mostly in a triangle between Connecticut, eastern Pennsylvania, and
Washington, D.C. ... our physical home is on the New Jersey shore.

4. Physical home? Huh?

That's right, we have a home of sorts. Our home is the InfoAge Learning Center
(www.infoage.org) which is a non-profit science museum currently under
construction. MARCH is one of several groups residing there, and our job is to
run a computer museum on the premises. We are making slow but steady progress
on that.

5. What else does MARCH do?

Lots of fun stuff. The most visible thing we do is maintain our Yahoo
discussion group. Activity-wise, our flagship event will be the Vintage
Computer Festival East. Our first edition of that hobbyist convention (and the
third VCF East event overall) will be held Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the InfoAge
facility. We also participate in the Trenton Computer Festival every April.
Once we make it through the VCF event, we'll start planning other events such as
a swap meet, regional gatherings, and perhaps a road trip. We also offer an
online inventory database to help you (and us) keep track of our collections.

6. Okay, this all sounds interesting. So by "antique/vintage" do you mean my
old Pentium II?

No, we mean your old Altair, Apple II, Commodore, DEC PDP-8, Epson HX-20,
HP-1000, IBM PC, KIM-1... we could go through the alphabet a couple times but we
think you get the idea by now. We're interested in truly antique computers, not
merely "used" computers.

7. I still don't get it. Where can I learn more about what's antique/vintage?

Many places. Pick up a copy of the book "Collectible Microcomputers" by Michael
Nadeau. Or for non-micro aspects, go online. Heck, go online anyway. Check
out the classiccmp.org mailing lists; the Vintage Computer Festival
(vintage.org); vintage-computer.com/vcforum, vintagecomputermarketplace.com,
old-computers.com; technologyrewind.com, and many, many, many others. (If
you're interested in specific machines, just post your question to our
discussion list and we can refer you to the best sites.)

8. What's behind the scenes of this wacky endeavor?

We have some de facto officers; an official set of bylaws and all that boring
stuff is being worked on... we're just so busy having fun that we keep
procrastinating. The officers (i.e., those who were suckered into the gig) are
Evan Koblentz (prez), Bill Degnan and Andy Meyer (VPs), Jim Scheef (treasurer),
and John Allain (web/museum helper-outer). The five of us take care of
logistical crap so the members can have fun with everything else.

9. Members, hmm, is it like just you and two buddies?

We're much bigger than that! As of spring 2006, we have three or four dozen
paid members, and 100+ on our discussion list.

10. Uh-oh, you said 'paid'... is that the catch?

Sort of. We realized early on that running a real club takes some money. To
help raise money, we ask members for a $20 donation or a board-approved
alternative. For now, alternatives include giving us good-quality folding
tables, doing some kind of work for our club which we'd otherwise have to pay
for, or being a minor. Anyway, this $20 situation is supposed to be a one-time
deal, but in real life, it may become an annual deal. But fear not: nobody *
has to * contribute anything. We offer some perks from time to time for the
paid members, but anyone can still participate in our group. Basically we're a
lot like shareware -- if you like what we do, then please help us pay our bills.
Of course, donations larger than $20 are always welcome, as are donations of
antique computers and various supplies for our museum.

11. So the club is entirely member-supported?

We raise money in other ways as well. For example, in the past we've rented
some antique computers to film companies as props, and we hope to make a few
dollars from hosting the Vintage Computer Festival and other events. In our
museum, we'll also sell t-shirts and such.

12. I have some other question not on this FAQ.

Okay. Tell us what it is. Do so again by posting to our message boards or
pinging me (evan@...) ... ask us anything, we're not shy! (And moreover,
unlike some computer clubs, we're not cliquey. All are welcome here!)

13. What else should I know before diving in to MARCH?

If you're a nerd who thinks really old computers and their related technologies
were cool, then give MARCH a chance. You'll be glad you did. Also, if you were
wondering, we're NOT a bunch of old farts who sit around and whine about how
much better things used to be. Quite the contrary: we're a lot of young and
mid-life farts who ... ooooh maybe we said too much. :)

A nice thought, but doesn't Radio Shack own this stuff?

I can understand Ira's frustration at having someone profit from what
he's collected, but shutting off downloads is the wrong thing to do,
because it effectively
makes those DVDs more valuable. If potential customers are made aware
that the same
material is available for free, they might not buy the DVD, especially
if they're only
looking for a couple of files.

In any event, this sort of thing makes me sad.

A bad problem, and, the best solution I've yet heard.
Just change the "owns" to "can have".
Next problem: what to do with the people who sign in and
still sell the copies. The 'hoops' will filter out a fair number
of potential violators right away though.

Saying you can have it but you can't own it on your terms
will not sit well with large numbers of people,
like me with a EULA insisting on transferring computers without software.

Is anyone driving from or through Ottawa on the way to VCF East next
weekend?

I have an 8/A to pick up in Ottawa and will be at VCF.

If you can provide help moving the (not small) system from Ottawa to New
Jersey, I will be happy to pay $200 toward your gas expenses.

An alternative might be someone traveling through Ottawa who could move
it to Toronto or London (Canada!)in the near future, but the machine
must be picked up in the next week or so.

I'm on the digest version of classiccmp, so please feel free to contact
me directly or call.

Subject: New pcb design for S-100 prototype board available

I've been working on a pcb design for a S-100 prototype board. I noticed
a few people on the forums asking about this. I decided to make this
since this is a big hobby of mine too. I based this design on a old
prototype board I kept back from the S-100 days. It's made by Electronic
Control Technology.

Here's a link to the picture
http://pghvintage.home.comcast.net/pics/S-100/s-100_prototypeboard.jpg

There were several different styles made before--each with their own
advantages. This prototype board(in pic) has the rows in a vertical
pattern to allow 300mil and 600mil DIP packages. It also accommodates 2
voltage regulators. Then there were some which only had a grid of solder
pads to allow any arrangement of 300mil and 600mil DIP packages.

I like to ask everyone what their preference might be in the arrangement
of the solder pads, eg: vertical rows, horizontal rows, grid, etc. If I
get enough feedback, I can include 2 different styles. It's not much
work to alter the design. I have a panel setup to include 2 pcb designs
at the moment, and it can be any 2 kinds of S-100 designs. In the
future, I like to setup a bigger panel to include several more S-100
designs.

Since this is mainly a hobby for me, I thought I might help out and
offer this service. I'm designing this from my home workshop and intend
to make this an affordable hobby. In case anyone is interested, with
enough orders(minimum 30) then I can offer these for only $15 each.

please send any feedback.

It's a nice, straightforward protoboard design you've photographed.
Can you really offer these at $15, with *plated edge connectors*, all
drilled out - and still cover your costs? Maybe you can make some
boards (of my design) for ME on those terms! We can talk privately
about stuff like that (after the upcoming VCF show).

The only downside to your vertical runs of chips is that it limits
chip count. Some protos are horizontal runs, some are perforated at .1
centers on the whole board. I'd prefer the whole-board perforated
design, and run my own grounds and power, for maximum flexibility. But
for a simple design using a dozen to 20 small chips, or a few large
chips, your board will do the job.

So good luck on your project! Keep me posted.

Claude Kagan permitted me to post this. He'd like a ride to and from
the VCF-E show, if someone is coming through the Trenton area. He
lives north of Pennington NJ, which is north of Trenton NJ. Contact me
and I'll exchange emails and phones. I may be able to provide some
transport but not on Saturday morning (I'm a dealer and speaker at the
show). He has limited vision so he can't drive.

Claude is known for his work on "Sam 76", a fairly early programming
language which ran as an interpreter on very small machines, like
PDP-8's and the earliest 8080 machines. He's also a collector of early
telecommunications equipment, a retired Western Electric engineer, and
occasional contributor to MARCH. He actually did some work at Camp
Evans, the InfoAge site when it was a military base! His recent
presentation at the Trenton ComputerFest was on the Devorak keyboard;
he previously spoke on Sam 76.

So, this would be an opportunity to hang out with somone even older
than ME, who was in the thick of telecom and old computers. Even I
don't have a mainframe in my garage!

Herb,

The cost is based on getting a batch order of 30 boards. I'm not
keeping an inventory here. I'm just designing this and looking for
people to join in. That way we can get it at a reasonable cost. This
design includes all the accouterments.

The vertical rows do seem to have a bigger limitation. Maybe it's better
to go with the grid pattern. I was thinking about adding the decode
logic too. But I haven't decide on whether to use discrete TTL logic or
a common PLD to save space.

Since this my hobby, I'm doing this mostly for fun and whatever bonus
there is at the end is alright by me :)

I'll be glad to help out on any design you might have. Send me email
offline and we can talk some more.

Hex,

Your site does not come up from the URL in your message. I suspect that your dynamic DNS is not being updated automatically as needed. If you are as serious as you say, eventually you will need to get a static IP address.

Erm, that is not a http server. It is a kdx server, for more information on kdx including download links for the kdx client go here: http://www.haxial.com/products/kdx/. Also note that the dns is being updated automatically properly as there are currently numerous people on my server now as I type this, the problem is that you are trying to access my server with the wrong protocol, http instead of kdx.

I'd also like to make a note about the dynamic ip bit. I'm a student, I don't have the money to pay the $100 a month my ISP wants for a static IP (they require a business account in order to get a static IP) as such I have no choice but to use a dynamic IP for my server. In all honesty I don't care if a server I like uses a dynamic IP or not as long as it stays up and I am using this principle with my server. I have gotten a nice subdomain for the server which is automatically updated as my server's IP changes for everyones convenience so that in the event that my server's IP does change all one will have to do is reconnect to the subdomain. But that should not be a issue because my ISP does not appear to change dynamic IP's until the modem is restarted and even then they tend to reissue the same IP address. So since power outages are rare in my location IP changes should happen very rarely. In addition I am a strong believer in 24/7 uptime (or 99.9% uptime), the only time when my server will be down is: 1) A security patch is released for my server's OS 2) Acts of god (e.g. a power outage) 3) In the rare event that my ISP experiences trouble with one of its backbones that affects your connection.

So all in all I feel that the situation my server is in now is a stable one and one that everyone can trust as a place to mirror this archive without concern. Check out my server and you will see that there already are people who actively trust me as a mirror of their files, let me mirror this archive and you will most definitely not regret it.

Check my kdx server at kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws (for more information on kdx including download links for the client go here: http://www.haxial.com/products/kdx/ ), it should have what you're looking for :). (When you're in the file browser use command+s to search the files on a mac or control+s to search the files on a pc)

Hi,

Trying to pin down final plans. Will there be exhibitor setup
time Friday afternoon/evening? If so, what are the times? If
not, when can we start Saturday morning? Thanks!

Is the doohicky one that uses an RP-TNC connector for its antennas? If
so, I wouldn't mind bringing down a couple of higher-dBi antennas to
increase the signal, if you think that might be a good idea,

No, but I'll let Bryan chime in. He knows the setup best.
