   Wow. Just, wow.

I don't know anything about the circumstances, but even in light of
that, I feel I can safely say that this was a really, really stupid move
on Valve's part.

It seems other people will let go. So far rumor says 25 people.
So it has less to do with her and more with what Valve is doing..
Wishing her luck..

Part of 25 firings. The Steam Box project may be in jeopardy.

Yeah I saw that. Jeri said "fired" but it sounds more like "laid off". Still
feels crappy to the victims (I've been there!), but it's not like she,
specifically, was "fired" in the traditional sense.

Well I know people here care about Jeri and would want to know.  I know it's OT,
but I felt it was worth posting.

How she finds a new job soon

All computer programs are games. Some are more interesting than others.
The game "payroll" is decidedly boring.

All less 2 - and I hope more.

I do not think it is appropriate to talk about someone's personal
misfortune on a public list - someone quite a few of us have met
and/or know. Yes, she let her followers know she was let go somehow,
but it is still a personal problem that is *hers*. This is not
something like a death or other tragedy, where it is appropriate to
spread the word. This is one of those stresses (and yes, losing a job
rates high on the H&R stress scale) that is best dealt with in a
private manner.

Want to send her some support? Make it private. The last thing she
probably needs is everyone in the world talking about the situation,
and worse, coming up with all sorts of speculations.

Learn some manners.

I agree; only responded to clarify the fact. Today the web is full of blogs,
etc. commenting that she was "fired" but it sounds like that isn't quite
accurate.

Nobody, here or elsewhere, is criticizing her for it. In fact she Tweeted a
thank-you message just now, re: all the support.

Keep in mind that she is absolutely a "public figure" in the tech world.

All less 1 perhaps.

But she does *not* make games.   She makes hardware!  *sigh*
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeri_Ellsworth

She has also made *semiconductors*.  Is there anybody here that does not like semiconductors?!

Only the geeks here who don't have a real woman in their lives! :)

She's somewhat of an enigma being she's a female in a generally male field.
Applaud her achievements but don't dwell on her misfortunes. I do suspect
that she will land safely on her feet somewhere else in short order.

There's still no power at InfoAge. Been six weeks. :(

Princeton U. offered to give InfoAge one of its extra transformers, but the
transformer they offered has the opposite problem -- it's so big that it would
cost a fortune to run it.

The town, which owns InfoAge's campus, asked Fred to get estimates for
independently wiring every building. Fred did that. Not surprising, it would
cost far more than just replacing the old transformer with a new one.

Fred hopes the town will see that and buy us a new appropriately-sized
transformer.

Meanwhile, he and others continue to seek other sources of transformer funding.

I'm sure Fred is working diligently in securing the funding for the repair at InfoAge. But why can't we start our own fundraising campaign. Everyone of the groups hosted there at InfoAge should already participating in some kind of fundraising campaign. What's stopping anyone from starting one ? I'm sure there is already enough exposure surrounding this predicament in order to solicit donations if places such as Princeton Univ. is already offering their own equipment. Just keep spreading the word around.
I'll drop $20 right now in the bucket if somebody there starts one, something such as Paypal can streamline the process, and only if donations are used towards the repair and not for any other expenditures. Each day just waiting is less donations you'll have.

Or maybe set it up as a Kickstarter project with an "I brought the power to InfoAge" t-shirt reward or something.
