I just found another MARCH in NJ: Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the
Humanities

just in case google didn't confuse us enough already.
I guess we can differentiate ourselves by emphasizing how we ain't human :-)

Since VCF included electronic music, this pertains to the group:

Rutgers Camden center for the arts
http://rcca.camden.rutgers.edu/

includes electronic music from REAL: Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab

http://rcca.camden.rutgers.edu/events
More recently, RCCA presents Electric Café in the Stedman gallery—a series of
performances organized by the Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab (REAL) under the
direction of Dr. Mark Zaki, assistant professor of music. Past season performers
have included Theremin performer and violinist Darryl Kubian, and electronic
music composer Joo Won Park who demonstrated the Super-Collider.

Real electronic music. ;) And, somewhat vintage too!

Before everyone starts tearing me apart about Kraftwerk being Electronic Music
or not.

Electric Café is the ninth studio album by the electronic group Kraftwerk,
originally released in 1986.

Well, if you want some "computer music", you could do
worse than Tomita's "The Bermuda Triangle". As well
as synthesized music, it actually contains Tarbell
format ASCII data incorporated into some tracks. Some
day, I'll do a VCF exhibit where I decode those live
as the vinyl plays.

Maybe because they're not that good? Minimalistic and the repetition of

I would never consider Isao Tomita to be "Counterculture." The Bermuda
Triange is Prokofiev (a la "Lt. Kije" -- if you don't know this music,
watch Woody Allen's parody on Tolstoy's "War and Peace" called "Love and
Death". Woody Allen goes dancing off with the grime reaper at the end
of the film to the Suite from Lt. Kije) laden with Tomita's synthesizer
"insensibilities."

That should work.

I was checking out the terminal program I often use, TELIX v3.20, it only goes
down to 300b. But a programming trick I use in BASIC to go higher than 9600b is
to access the UART Baud Divider directly. Why not try it here??? I tested it
on TELIX, first by shelling out to DOS from within TELIX. The baud does drop to
110b but only while you're shelled out, the moment you come back to TELIX,
either TELIX or COMMAND.COM reverts to the 300b. So, I tried a different method
to shell out. Using the "EDITOR" program in TELIX it works.

Here's what I did. Go into TELIX SETUP <Alt-o>, Choose "Filenames and paths",
Choose H for EDITOR, Enter "DEBUG" for your editor. Save and now from within
TELIX, press <Alt-A> to activate DEBUG.

In DEBUG, you can access the UART directly.
Assuming COM1 with a base address of 0x3F8
-i 3fb
XX <-Note this value (Expect to see 03 = state of DTR,RTS,Etc)
-o 3fb 83 <-the 83 is the XX value with the msb set
-o 3f8 10 <-New divider for 110b = 0x410
-o 3f9 4
-o 3fb 3 <-Revert to previous value of XX
-q <-Quit, return to TELIX and you're talking at 110b

You can enter all these commands into a text file and pipe them into DEBUG, so
all you'll have to do is press <Alt-A> to get your 110b.

Cheers,
Josh

If by "counterculture" you mean "long hair", that's been the norm in
the high-tech world since pretty much day one. Even the scientists on
the Manhattan Project were called "longhairs", because, well, many of
them were. It's the culture...SHORThairs are the "counterculture" here.

All,

I've been going through and cleaning up/testing some of my spare S100 boards.
Looks like I've got more than enough I/O boards to suit my needs, so I'm going
to be selling a few off. Here's the first:

http://www.glitchwrks.com/temp/jadeio.jpg

It's a Jade 1P2S board, which supports one parallel and two serial I/O channels.
This board was a little hacked up when I got it, and as you can see in the
regulator area, was not treated so well by a previous owner. I've cleaned it up
and done a little testing on it...the parallel port is fully functional, and the
two UARTS at least send TTL level data in loopback or to one another. No further
testing has been done as I didn't plan on keeping it.

It's sort of a weird board...in addition to doing the usual serial stuff, it
supports three serial signaling standards: TTL, RS-232 and Kansis City 1200 bps
tape. There's a built-in KC compatible tape modem right on board. Schematics and
manual are available online. UARTs are standard 40-pin LSI variety (these are
TR1602s) and the parallel port is latched output via 74LS174s/unlatched input
via 81LS97.

Open to money offers or trades!

Thanks,
Jonathan

Send Email Send Email

A few weeks ago, a man named Bob Kirn visited InfoAge, and told Jeff B. / Steve
that he was stationed nearby at Ft. Monmouth and trained people on how to use
MOBIDIC. Yesterday I interviewed him by phone.

I learned a lot. I've interviewed several people who helped design MOBIDIC but
I've only read about the operators and trainers.

Highlights:

- Bob worked on the Sealand company's IBM 305 Ramac. When he joined the Army, he
was accepted into the MOBIDIC program "...because I could spell 'computer'."

- Ft. Monmouth used a simulator to teach MOBIDIC programming, because the real
computer (they had one of six) was needed for daily use.

- His students (in the early/mid-1960s) were taught COBOL to see if that would
work out. Makes sense: I previously read that by the later 1960s there was a
COBOL compiler for this machine.

- The students were a mix of enlisted personnel and officers, and sometimes
included foreign officers. Countries represented included the U.K., India,
Pakistan, and the Philippines. Kirn said a Pakistani general was there.

Hi Folks,

I just heard that the Spare Time Gizmos SBC6120 partial kit is being offered as a Kickstarter project:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sparetimegizmos/classic-pdp8-replica

There are just 12-days left until the project expires. It currently has 11 of 30 slots filled.

Only 30-slots are available and all must be filled for the project to be funded. No more will be available due to limited availability of the HD6120 chip.

I have signed up for one, so I'm hoping that it goes forward!

I'm hoping to get a bit of time in the next few weeks to work on my 11/750. It's
been a long term project to say the least but the last time I worked on it, I
was about to boot into VMS for the first time when I got a console hang.
Restarting the machine resulted in a stuck run light, all of which I'd had

So I'm looking for sources for either of those boards. Any pointers/MARCHins
