Good day now that InfoAge is back open. We had a couple of families visit with
very bright children.

Nick L. visited, and Jeff B./Jeff J. both came by too. Jeff B. returned our PET
2001 after fixing it at Degnan's recent tech weekend. Then he and Jeff J. and I
cleared some space in our storage area.

Doesn't sound like much, but we had a full day.

I'm trying to track down some of these GE Solid State Lamp series LEDs that GE produced in the early 1970s. I have a couple of burned out and flaky ones in my Intellec and would like to replace them with genuine parts. The SSL-22 is the one listed in my schematic/part list.

Any ideas would be certainly appreciated!

I have something that I would like to show. It wasn't a movie, but a TV show
that lasted 10 episodes. We don't have to watch all episodes, just a few.
Can I use that instead ?

Great ! I call dibs on "Fat Guy Stuck in Internet" It is 10 episodes lasting
about 12 minutes each. Totaling 2 hours.

*AND* it fits Bill Degnan's suggestion that it be technology related.

Yes, that information would be useful, now wouldn't it! They are shorter than the standard 5mm height, though still 5mm in diameter. They are still rounded on top, though maybe a half to three-fourths as tall. I was silly and failed to get a picture when the computer was taken apart. The best picture I have of the LEDs is this one: http://i.imgur.com/6lew1.jpg

I am not 100% sure they are the SSL-22s as listed in the schematic/parts list I have for the 4 MOD 40, though I would assume they are.

Subject: Re: Kaypro II retrace/blanking problem

Hi,

Video can be either +ve or -ve depending on the system, I have no
knowledge of the Kaypro (is there a circuit somewhere ?), but the
following info from my basic video knowledge.

In a basic Black/white video signal (usually 1V p-p) 0% is the sync
pulse level, 33% is black, 100% is white. The Black level is usually
"clamped" in some way and the sync pulses both line and field are
imposed on on black as a pulse to 0%, the actual video is then left to
fill the remainder between 33% to 100%.

It would appear that your 100% "white" level is ok, but that the 33%
"black" level is changing so the flyback is seen on screen. Some systems
generate a "flyback blanking" signal from the video to turn the CRT beam
off during this period, if the Kaypro does it may have failed. Others
rely on the video to block the beam during flyback purely by the video
being below the 33% level.

As The Kaypro seems to get worse with time I suspect a component/s in
the video chain is drifting so that the 33% level drifts towards the
100% level, it could be either in the video generation or the display.

The basic structure of the video signal is good as the text is displayed
in the correct place and time, so the sync signals are correctly placed,
just that the "black" background level appears to drift up from black.

Basic video structure here - http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3020/en -
there are many examples on the web.

A circuit of the Kaypro video system would help, anybody ?.

Regards,
Mike

I found a datasheet with a Google search. I sent it to you by private email.
They very, very, VERY much look like red LED's to me, maybe shorter in height
than some. If you measure the dimensions of yours, I can check my junk box to
see if I have some of similar dimensions. Others of course can do likewise.

Thanks for checking on that, Dave! I'm on vacation right now, and thus can't access the front panel to the Intellec. However, when I get back, I'll let you know for sure. I think the top one may be it, especially if it's shorter than the "standard" 5mm LEDs of today. It's important that they are shorter, as the top of the LEDs rest right up against the front panel. I do recall it having a lip at the base, so I'd think we can rule the other two out.

I too have some vintage/uncommon LEDs (namely other GE parts in the TO-18 package, but also some 3-leaded ones in plastic), as well as 2000 infrared LEDs. I'm not sure what I'll do with those yet, but I'm thinking a large infrared illuminator for nighttime vision will be in the works one of these days. A local company that made remotes and other stuff for in-home audio systems was liquidating, and hence, I got a bunch of new stuff at very good prices.

Sounds good. I have a bunch of others that we can go through until
we find the right one.

Neat! I love LEDs in general, but I especially like metal-encased
LEDs. I have some nice old Russian ones, red and green, that look very
much like TO-18 packages but aren't quite the same size. They look
great. I'm looking for the "right" project for a bunch of those.

You don't say where you are. OS/2 software from the 1.x days has really
gotten pricey. I have stopped buying stuff on eBay since I won't pay
$100's for stuff that is just to sit on a shelf. We used to give a lot of
this old stuff away at Warpstock events in the US and Europe, but the
sources have dried up. Have you tried local computer clubs for anyone
that has this stuff they are looking to get rid off?

Bill --

Other than the smoke test, no. I'm waiting for 50-conductor ribbon cable that I ordered to arrive. I have the 50-pin IDC connectors already. I'm hoping for sometime this weekend if the cable shows-up.

Are NEC uPD416D 16kx1 RAM chips of interest to anyone?

*whew* there's no way I could have retyped that long one into
the browser address field. The short one was hard enough.
What's that blue underline mean?

I may be interested in some. How many do you have?

These are dynamic RAMs by the way, unless my own RAM is experiencing serious
errors.

I'm sure you all will be bitterly disappointed to hear that
the updates have been postponed till January 2013.
Yes, I clicked through their awful link to their "blog".

I'll be interested in hearing if you guys think their claim of oldest is true.
I did enjoy the video, love seeing old pixie tubes in action.
It would be really cool to do a video tour around the machine
what's in it, any interesting/unusual theory of op, etc.
Ditto goes for other old machines.
Maybe such presentations are available on DVD from somewhere?

It's the oldest digital large-scale computer. But there are probably some people
with Simon computers from the 1950s. Those are digital, just not large-scale.
