Hello Everyone,

The Sec. of Interior signed the designation today. Camp Evans is a
National Landmark for the home-front service and the major roll radar
played in the WWII allied victory. Congressman Smith will be holding a
press conference at 2:30PM in the Marconi Hotel Lobby. If you can make
it, please do.

This is very good news. It honors the thousands of home front warriors
who worked at Camp Evans to defeat the Axis powers. As a subpost of Fort
Monmouth, this honor also includes main post in Eatontown, Squire Labs.,
Camp Coles, Fort Handcock, the Long Branch Signal Lab. and the many
temporary sites like the Shark River Hotel, the former Grossman Hotel in
Bradley Beach, the Asbury Park Yards, the Avon storage facility and
Jimmy ByrnesÂ’ Sea Girt Inn. It also honors all the men and mostly ladies
who worked in factories all over NJ manufacturing the radar and radio
components designed by the Labs that help win the "Battle of the
Laboratories" as President Truman called it.

Saying ‘thank you’ to the thousands of home front warriors who labored
in the laboratories and factories to win WWII is long overdue.

Thanks to the efforts of the many Camp Evans volunteers like you, Camp
Evans has not faded away as predicted in 1993. Camp Evans is now a
science community center. It holds the potential of many more years of
excellent community service as the WWII Living Memorial and as a
National Landmark.

We can inspire kids to learn science...where history was made.

Please mark Saturday, November 17th as our day to celebrate this happy
event. Details to follow.

Well, I got my PDP-11/03 chassis up and going, so I probably won't bring that.
Sounds like there's some S-100 interest, so I may just bring stuff to help other
people out. So if you are interested in S-100 project type stuff, let me know so
I can decide what to bring down!

Amy and I will *most likely* be coming down, as long as nothing major interrupts
our plans. Depending on room, I might bring down a bit of extra stuff for
sale/trade (Herb, I've got STD Bus stuff for you!).

Thanks,
Jonathan

I too get lots of satisfaction mastering and seeing these old beasts run. Part
of it comes from trying to do the job while keeping it as original as possible.
When I had to fix some broken keys on my OSI Superboard, I wouldn't know where
to get replacement switches, so I had to open them up to the point where I could
fix it. I made a nice write up on that with lots of pictures and posted on one
of the OSI web sites for the next guy.

Long live the Eureka Moment! When everything just starts to work again.

I bought one of Andrew's S100 8088 CPU boards, should make for a fun project
some day. I also bought Andrew's S100 Prototyping board, great board for making
stuff. I'm sadly underusing it as a RAM/ROM board at the moment.

I'm very happy to hear this. I like reading and learning about WWII and all its
battles. It's such a complicated war and we were very close to extermination.

Ok, so there's a good reason why we have the worlds largest undefended border...
no one wants to come here!

Of course I know Bryan, he's the Prime Ministers other neighbor!

But seriously, where's Bryan from?

Here's a transistor with 430 on it. Would that make it 1964, week 30?
Transistor part number is 2N1218. Or does the 430 refer to the factory the
transistor was made? or other?

Photo of transistor posted in the photos/Josh Bensadon folder of this group.

I've seen some IC's with only a 3 digit code on them (not part of this analog
computer). Case in point is the following:

CD4023BE
RCA H 650

Is that to mean 1976 week 50?
H being the factory where it was made?

Cheers,
Josh

Yes, In my opinion you are correct.
In the early years of semiconductors most parts have three digit date codes.
You have to know the approximate decade the part was first produced to get the
correct date.

Sometimes you have trouble telling the part number apart from the date code.
In the 1970s a lot of the 7400 series ic's had date codes like 7414 and a part
number like 7404.
I was always having trouble with those.

A good history of early transitor marking can be found here.

Because of the National Historic Landmark designation, last night InfoAge was on
News12 New Jersey, and today it's in the Asbury Park Press. Hopefully there will
be coverage by larger news organizations.

The APP site is full of popups, etc., so here's there story (pasted for this
list only):

-------------------------

WASHINGTON — Camp Evans in Wall was named Wednesday as a National Historic
Landmark for its role in the military’s development of radar.

The designation announced by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar was among 27
sites chosen nationwide, including New York City’s iconic Rainbow Room at
Rockefeller Center.

“Each of these landmarks represents another thread in the great tapestry that
tells the story of our beautiful land, our diverse culture and our nation’s rich
heritage,” Salazar said.

Camp Evans was a World War II-era U.S. Army Signal Corps facility that played a
lead role in the military’s development, testing and production of top-secret
electronics such as radar. Radar teams at Camp Evans coordinated the development
of the new technology with labs across the country, eventually producing
equipment that was used in all World War II theaters.

Most significantly, a unit designed by Camp Evans engineers was able to detect
enemy airplanes about 50 minutes before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The use of
radar developed at Camp Evans has been cited as a major factor in the U.S.
victory in World War II.

Following the war, Camp Evans was a Cold War technology and nuclear weapons
research site. It was also the birthplace of satellite-based hurricane tracking
and a pre-NASA space research site.

The landmark designation means each site will get a designation letter, a
plaque, and technical preservation advice. Camp Evans is already listed on the
National Register of Historic Places and is a Save America’s Treasures official
project.

A group of nonprofit organizations are working to restore and preserve the
shuttered facility and create the Infoage Science/History Learning Center.

So, InfoAge was already on the National Register of Historic Places, and
now we're a National Historic Landmark -- but what's the difference in
criteria? I didn't know the answer -- and I'm still confused about it.
But here is something interesting from Wikipedia: "Out of more than
85,000 places on the National Register of Historic Places only about
2,430 are NHLs."

Thanks for reminding me about that STDbus stuff. Contact me privately to remind
me of our "deal".

There's some good chance I'll bring an unpowered PDP-8/F, the one I brought to
MARCH's Fix-it months ago. I have to decide if I can pre-test and "reform" the
caps in the switching supply this week. It's a pretty big box to lug around, and
watching capacitors form is not exactly group-fun activity. Since Bill has an 8,
it's nice to bring a "sibling".

I'll likely bring an Ithaca Intersystems S-100 machine. I fired it up and it
looks pretty functional. I want to be able to bring up a floppy drive and serial
and test memory. That's a fair amount of pokin' type work.

I may likely bring a Polymorphic 88 system, the one I had at VCF-E in 2010. It's
not been powered up but I don't sweat that, the power supply is dirt simple. I
have boxes of cards I can plug into it including of course the "originals".

That's all the stuff I can handle. If the 8/F is no-go, I could bring a Teletype
ASR 33. NOt the ones I got from MARCH, this one is otherwise clean and needs
some informed attention, to figure out what else it needs. I need some
"training" on this.

Otherwise I bring tools and a scope, a cot and probably a tent. I cover a lot of
contingencies.

These are items that either I know a lot about, or that Bill has locally and has
more recent repair knowledge than I have. To the extent I find out what others
are bringing, I can bring other items or change my priorities. It's a little
late to do that however.....

Also: I don't enjoy winter driving. If the weather is awful I may bail out.
There's no obvious storm next weekend appearing so far.

Alise and I volunteered at the InfoAge Halloween event last night. It
was very busy, and many people said it was better than last year's
event. Next weekend (10/26-27) is the last one, from 7-11pm both nights.
I recommend going and bringing kids.

Today I met a non-MARCHin at 11:30. He purchased our two remaining 028
teletypes. It was good deal all around -- a reasonable price, cleared
some space in our storage area, and a happy customer.

Corey delivered the new case for the Mimeo 1. It looks great, and it's
made from a single piece of (acrylic? plexiglass?) so there are no
pieces to break apart, which was a problem on the previous case. This
one is also easier to carry, requires one less cooling fan, and is
therefore quieter. Here is a big picture: http://snarc.net/mimeo_new.jpg.

We had visitors on and off during the afternoon -- a good mixture of
ages, backgrounds, and knowledge bases. Alise vacuumed our exhibit rooms
and I put some additional holders for historic magazines in the homebrew
room.

Just a friendly reminder that our holiday party, a.k.a. "Vintage
Computer Festivus" is the weekend of Dec. 8-9 at the museum. $10/person
as a donation to InfoAge, which is separate from whatever food/drink we
cumulatively decide to buy. MARCH will probably supply some basics;
details when it gets closer.

Well it was time to retire the old Lexan case. It was glued together and was
fragile enough to keep cracking at the glue points since it's now part of the
MARCH traveling exhibit for shows.

So a new case was in order, and I wanted to try a new single piece design, so I
grabbed some 1/4" plexi from home depot and a blowtorch, then I went to task....

So without further delay....

Jeff,
It will be helpful to a point, but you have to first determine what
motherboard you have, test the voltages coming from the power supply, etc.
The basic stuff. Look closely, you'll find where the motherboard part
number(s) are printed on the board. All motherboards of any vintage have
some sort of identifying part number

Hi Gang:

So, last night I was watching an episode of "Into the Universe with
Stephen Hawking" on Science Channel. The episode focused on
possibilities for alien life forms and where they might exist. As a
part of that, it was mentioned that scientists have been monitoring
radio waves to try to detect any possible radio signals of artificial
origin. SETI@Home is a part of that effort.

Anyway, the episode showed a "recreation" of the famous "Wow!" signal
that was received on August 15, 1977. As part of that recreation, the
desk of the researcher involved had a PET at one side. Well, the PET
was shown at the June 1977 CES, but units apparently did not ship
until October. So, I guess this is an official anachronism. But, I
suppose we have to be glad they at least got the year correct, in the
attempt to have a "period" computer as part of the set dressing.

Of course, the PET had absolutely nothing to do with the receiving or
decoding of the Wow signal itself. But it was nice to see a piece of
vintage hardware on TV. :)

They were demo'ing PETS all year in 1977, from January on. Probably they
started trickling out before the fall.

That's a good look. The sides are pretty open though, I would worry about
people's fingers wandering in.
