Well,

It will use either USB 1.1 or FireWire 400, or if u have another mac you can just get a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable boot the eMac in FireWire target disc mode and copy over what you want to keep.

As for drives you can get something that is guaranteed Mac compatable at other world computing www.macsales.com or look on ePay for something by LaCie

What version of the MacOS are you running?

Hope this helps,

Matt

I am not sure of the OS, I will check when I get home, but it is Tiger, plus. I have an iomega and airport extreme backing up the MacBooks but I cannot partition it to included the emac so I was going to just get another one. Thanks for the website info.

This isn't as big a deal as many people make it out to be. Anything
that implements the standard USB mass storage profile will work; the
protocols have been fully standardized for many years now. Even more
relevant is the fact that there are only three or four different USB
device-end chipsets used in mass storage devices nowadays, and they all
work on pretty much anything.

I find the best thing to do is buy an enterprise class drive. These usually come with a 5 year warranty. These drives cost a little more but the components passed higher level tests then the drive lacie will sell you.
As Matt mentioned I buy my drives at other world computing  they have build your own kits to choose the interfaces firewire/usb and choose enterprise class drives.

Her...and I'm right there with you on that. USB isn't a particularly
good storage interface.

Indeed! I picked up one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/MiniPro-2-5-inch-FireWire-External-Enclosure/dp/B003EMR0WW\
/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1338417302&sr=8-4

USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 for a 2.5" SATA drive. I've been very
happy with the unit (had it about 2 years). Mostly I use it for moving files
around between my machines and my parents' machines, largely to exchange backup
data. Works fine as a FireWire 400 drive under MacOS 9.2 as well as modern OSes.

Thanks,
Jonathan

It is running OS X10.4.7.
I have not looked but I am sure I have all of the original disks somewhere.
I appreciate your suggestions.

I was looking at the

1.0TB HGST Ultrastar A7K2000 7200RPM SATA Enterprise Class HD with 32MB Cache.
Energy Efficient, Enterprise Reliability 3.5" Serial ATA 3Gb/1.5Gb Hard Drive
with 5yr HGST Factory Warranty. (0A39289)
Just $119, but it does not specify that it will work with my emac

or

FireWire 800/400, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, eSATA interfaces
Mac and PC compatible - $99

Both of which appear to be a deal compared to my original idea of buying a
second Air Port Express, and reprogram the iomega.

I also think the suggestion to find a vintage mac forum is a good idea. Please
let me know if you know of one. MARCH was the first user friendly forum I
stumbled into.
I have never used a chat room style forum before but I plan on suggesting the
format to my son's school booster club and our Sunday School for virtual
meetings.

Thank you.

This sounds to me like an "internal" drive, meaning a drive without a
chassis. (due to cluelessness, the industry makes the distinction
between "internal" and "external" drives, which is nuts because ALL
drives are "internal"...some of them, however, get put into chassis!)

Anyway, I thought you were looking for what is generally referred to
as an "external" drive...

...like this one. What's the capacity of this one?

I'm unfamiliar with the eMac hardware; I kinda doubt it has FireWire,
but it's sure to have USB at least. It certainly doesn't have eSATA.

Well I do have 2 mac books but nothing I can share a back up drive with.

The LeCie designs are sweet! At the risk of sounding really stupid would you
suggest 1TB or 2TBs. I have mostly family photos that need saving.

I will call the company to make sure that it will be emac compatible before I
order.

Just look at which interfaces the eMac has. I'm guessing (without
looking it up) that has USB, but no FireWire or eSATA.

The eMac has USB 1.0 and FireWire 400. Internally it uses PATA.

Well there you have it, thanks to Matt and Ray.

This being the case, I'd recommend an "external" (grumble) drive with
both USB and FireWire interfaces. USB really sucks as a mass-storage
interface (despite its near-ubiquitous use as such...but remember,
popularity is the hallmark of mediocrity!), so you'll want to use
FireWire whenever possible, and fall back to USB on systems lacking
FireWire.

True, and we * gradually * account for that. For example we allowed an SGI
exhibit at VCF East this year. But the eMac launched in 2002. Maybe someday the
whole iMac transition will be considered historic (which is why we have one in
the museum collection -- we'd like to have a museum exhibit one day of "modern
history") but for now it's just a used computer.

I'm sure there are many forums where good help is available for modern Macs.

But as I said, it's not totally banned here (at least once we get to know the
poster, as we have with you.)

It would be different if someone posted about a modern computer with their very
first post, or all the time -- then we'd probably restrict their membership.

Agreed, when we have the extra space. Right now InfoAge needs * money * to
renovate the larger buildings next door, so they can get a certificate of
occupancy for those buildings, so we can move into them, so we can display more
stuff, so we'll have more visitors....

So ... It'll be a while. Possibly less than a year, but more likely longer.

Here's a directory with something similar to what we did for HOPE in 2010

I am guessing you are referring to the PACS Evolution? Is there an audio
narration to go with that file? I just really liked how you guys did the HOPE
lecture. It had a theme, it put you in touch with the perception at the time
and it was chocked full of great bits of historical facts. As a matter of fact,
there were so many bits that you could count them in bytes! :)

Someone posted a video/torrent of our 2010 talk. I forget where. It's probably
in the list archive from that timeframe.

There is official audio at http://www.thenexthope.org/talks-list/

I'm curious, how many of you installed a switch to override the need to put a
black tab on the write protect notch?

Have done! Also, I use a Shugart 800 out of an old Tektronix terminal with my
Ohio Scientific Challenger III -- it came with a hardware write protect switch
wired onto the standard Shugart drive board.

Thanks,
Jonathan
