Don't mean to interject here, but one other thing that makes a festival is having something where you can sell pictures of something, such as, ASCII Art.

With just a PC , printer and internet connection to access the ascii artwork online(or download beforehand) you can sell them for a couple of bucks each. There's even a website that will convert gif's, jpg's into ascii pictures.

This is always nostalgic

What's even better is ascii artwork t-shirts :)

Science fiction groups tend to have a lot of members that were early adapters
to computing.  You have groups in NYC, Long Island and Philadelphia.  They
have conventions, Lunacon, ICON and Philcon which is currently held in New
Jersey and not Philadelphia.  At one point, Lunacon was held a stone's throw
from Jimmy Hoffa's burial site in Giant's Field.

Is CP-301 still being used?  It was a dinosaur when I used it and then I saw them

Of course I will mention this event to my class and send an announcement to
the CISC/CPEG people at the University of Delaware...first day is today.

I have a full class this year, there is enough buzz about the class to keep
it going. I have a new classroom too.

This year I am going to start off the semester by demoing a little BBS I
wrote for the Commodore 64, and the associated background about how people
used computers to communciate before the Internet as we know it today.
We're going to go over Ward Christensen's article from Byte magazine in
1978 - the CBBS, and so on.

And being in teacher mode I am wearing khaki pants.

Wait! Are you considered a computer science teacher,
math teacher or history teacher? Please consult the
following chart:

Math - Dark blue polyester pants.
Computer science - Blue jeans.
History - Either cut off jeans or corduroy slacks,
depending on age. If corduroy slacks,
must be worn with _badly_ mismatched
                    suit jacket.

This was the (apparently anyway) official dress code at
the University of Maryland in the 1980's and 1990's. I'm
not kidding. I had a good friend who was a comp sci prof
and switched over to math. He switched from jeans to poly.
He said he "had" to.

Follow the thread: it’s the underlying “H Plus” site that made this claim.  They were firmly corrected by several folks.  :-)

It was interesting just how hard some of them were still working to cast Microsoft as a ‘bad guy’ in the story, but in fact Microsoft purchased QDOS from Seattle Computer Products, dotted some I’s and crossed some t’s, and sold it to IBM for their new PC (IBM promptly rebranding it, although the v2.0 manual’s cover sheet prominently states, “By Microsoft Corporation”).  When other vendors got into the game, Microsoft had retained the right to sell MS-DOS to them, too.  -- Ian

Gleaned from PC Magazine "DOS Power Tools" Paul Somerson 1988.
The PC was always an 8088.  Gates even wondered why, in 1980 when it
was introduced, IBM did not use the 8086 with its sixteen bit bus versus
the eight bit bus of the 8088.
It was in late 1980 that IBM approached Bill Gates to write the operating
system which would be MSDOS1.0.
As the 8088 and 8086 were introduced in 1978, seems that what was more
probable is that the IBM engineers started by breadboarding 8080's and may
have reversed engineered an IMSAI 8080 and the real reason they ran with
the 8088 is that they were not ready to deal with the greater bus capability
of the 8086 in a meaningful way.
Bill Gates had bought for $50,000 rights to Tim Patterson's 86-DOS and
that was what would be reverse engineered to become the operating system
in the PC.  As the name says, the operating system was designed for an 8086,
not an 8088.
On a different note, what are the specifics on cassette player and cassette needed
to run with the cassette basic program on the ROM of the PC?  I've got the
item in my closet, it worked when I last played with it but I've always been
curious about that function that wasn't carried on to later machines.

The seeming inconsistencies between my post and Ian's can be resolved as
follows.  Tim Patterson worked for Seattle Computer Products and QDOS
became 86-DOS after some tweaks.

Don't keep your hopes up. Ten days is a long time for an accurate weather forecast

Bad news / good news.

Bad - the slide show from Network World fell through. :(

Good - I got a call from the Philadelphia City Paper today (alternative
weekly). Reporter said she's writing an article for their Sept. 10
issue. Somehow her editor found our web site.

Awesome list. Thanks Dan.

My list is own computer clubs, but the email addresses tend to flake out
over time. That's why me and Jeff F. are busy with an (ahem) data
mining (not spam!!) project. :)

If anyone here is a member on byoac.com (build your own arcade controls) forums, post there. I'll advertize on some sci-fi forums

Good idea. It would be great to contact every CS department at every
college/university from Hartford to Pittsburgh to D.C. .......

..... But I'm massively bogged down .... what I desperately need is
HELP. :)

I've got a template email. Can someone get the email addresses for me?
Let's collect the email addresses of every prof and admin assistant of
every CS department of every college/university in Mass., Conn., NY, NJ,
PA, De., MD, DC.

I'm serious. If everyone mines the CS web sites from a few different
schools then it won't be too hard. Key is to get ALL the schools, not
just the biggies.

Then send me the emails in comma-separate format i.e. joe@...,
jim@..., etc. and I'll plug them into a template email and send away.

Science fiction groups tend to have a lot of members that were early adapters
to computing.  You have groups in NYC, Long Island and Philadelphia.  They
have conventions, Lunacon, ICON and Philcon which is currently held in New
Jersey and not Philadelphia.  At one point, Lunacon was held a stone's throw
from Jimmy Hoffa's burial site in Giant's Field.
bs
Yet another good idea!  And the same answer I'm telling everyone, on- and off-list ...... please HELP, don't just tell me, "You should" .....    ;)

Get me the email addresses.  Please.

Here's the message I am sending to as many groups / forums as possible.
Please post the MARCH list everytime ya'll put this someplace, so we
don't do redundant work.

It's also cool to customize the template in * your own words * .....

All please limit your posts to just online forums and blogs for now.
I'll send out all the messages to regular computer clubs (with the
assistance of everyone else, as explained in my previous couple of
messages....)

Hello, fellow (fill in topic) fans!

This year's Vintage Computer Festival East will be held September 12-13
at the InfoAge Science Center located in Wall, New Jersey.

VCF is a public event celebrating the history of computers from the
1940s - 1980s. The morning schedule is for lectures and workshops; the
afternoons are an open exhibit hall where everything is turned on and
working.

Among this year's highlights are the keynote address about RCA computers
in the 1950s, an 8-bit musical concert, BASIC programming challenge, and
the build-your-own terminal workshop.

Details are posted at http://www.vintage.org/2009/east/ where you'll
also find the latest VCF news and a 2-minute video montage of last
year's show. Or refer to the simple event brochure at
http://www.vintage.org/2009/east/vcfe6.pdf .... tickets are $10 for one
day or $15 for both days; 17 and younger get in free.

The event benefits the InfoAge Science Center, which is a 501c3 non-profit.

Thank you,
- Evan Koblentz
