Jon...on 1st Feb you said you went to France to see the eclipse. I had my
flexwing rigged, at Croydon, the night before, ready for an dawn dash across the
Channel.

With low threatening clouds, cowardise eclipsed enthusiasm and I spent a morose
day at work. The view was good there, but I'm sure would have been better from
the green fields of France.

I was heading for Montdidier fly-in. Where were you? & was ther a break in the
clouds?

Hi...1st contribution Q flying from near Croydon, with playground between
Gatwick & Heathrow

My cherished extras are from ski shops... finest silk under, undergloves and a
50cm long velvet neck tube. Probably both are also available from quality sex
shops.

I do miss the thrill of flying with an unravelling scarf flapping in front of
the tracter prop. (Sadly I would never appreciate the usual dry humour in the
BMAA accident report. Perfect glide landing 240 miles from helmeted head
crater)

Hi Jon
I've went over to Caunton on my first attempt at a cross country, turned out
to be the best evenings flying I've had so far, some nice machines at
Caunton, not a place to go if you get jealous :)

Hi, just joined today and the site looks very promising.
I fly out of Caunton, Notts and have flown into Watnall a couple of times
Leigh.
I started flying microlights in Witbank, South Africa in 95.
It was very thermic during the day so most flying was done before 10 am or
after 5 pm.
I passed my GFT in in the UK in 96 and have done a couple of trips over to
France since then (last year to see the eclipse).
To keep toes warm, Adrian, moon boots are quite popular (£20 in C&A)or
hiking boots and two pairs of socks.
Hands are either in thick gloves under neoprene bar mitts -
or electric bar heat with thin leather gloves under the same bar mitts.
Oh for the tee shirt and shorts flying in the Transvaal!
Cheers

Hi,
Yes there are a few of us out here but nowhere near
enough. We should really think of some better ways of
promoting the list as I'm sure there are more than 20
microlight pilots in the UK! I'm sure the list will
get far busier when more people start to sign up, it's
all about numbers...
Anyway, while I'm on, does anyone out there have any
experience of the X-air 3 axis microlight? I'm
considering building one but would like some other
oppinions first.

Cheers,
Chris

Hello from Lexington, Kentucky USA

I fly an Air Creation 503 Clipper trike with a LaMouette Ghost 14
wing. I live on a farm about 15 kilometers west
of Lexington. My first experience that I had with microlights was in
Costar Rica, South America about four years ago.
A commercial pilot from Germany owned a vacation home there, he flew a
Cosmos Phase II trike. As he would fly
up and down the beach he would pick up people for a quick flight. After
flying with him a few times I got hooked on
trikes. At the time that I purchased my Air Creation three years ago
there were only 2 other trikes in the whole
state of Kentucky today there are 12 trikes in the state, as you can see
this form of microlighting is very new to the US.
I have a grass strip here on my farm that I fly from so it is very
convenient when I get the urge to take off. I have been a
member of BMAA for the past three years now as your magazine has quite
a bit more trike related articles in it.
Thanks for the opportunity to listen and learn from you folks over
there.

Some time ago (summer 98) there was mention in the BMAA magazine about a
Handheld transponder. Next issue had a follow up that it was due on the
market "in October"(98), this is to the best of my recollection, I made the
mistake of lending some of my back issues to a friend, who lent them to a
friend, who....

Since then I have seen nothing more about it. Has anyone heard of such a
thing, was it fantasy, if it does exist is it Mode-C?

I am looking for such a beast, or a compact transponder because where I am
(Dubai) we cannot go above 2,000ft without one (at least not with
permission, we know that Radar can't see us 'cos they want us to have
Mode-C).

Handheld would be best, as I have 2 aircraft (Fox Ikarus C22 and Minimax),
and I don't want to have 2 installations, I would rather move one unit
between aircraft like my Garmin-II and Icom-A22.

Cheers for now,
Nige.

Leigh,

It sounds like you may have been a bit unlucky with your trip to Spain. I did
most of my training last April
in a 10 day period in southern Spain. I managed to average 2 hours a day in the
air and have enough time
to do the exams, sample the local cuisine and do a bit of touristing.

All of the flying was first thing in the morning or late evening when the air
was still. Conditions in the middle of the
day were bumpy to say the least and not suitable for student flying (esp. in an
XL!). It did however leave time
during the middle of the day to visit the local tourist spots or head to the
beach to study for the next exam.

Finding good weather weekends back in the UK to complete the course has been a
struggle - it took a further
6 months after I returned. I have great admiration for anyone who gets their
license while only flying weekends
in the UK! I would recommend a stint in Spain to anyone who is struggling to
find the air time in the UK.

Having recently passed my test, I'm probably keener than most to brave the
winter cold (flexwing) and enjoy those
still winter days. Does anyone have suggestions on how to keep warm? I have
tried various layers etc, but toes and fingers
are still a problem. What to other people wear?

Hi Folks,
As a student pilot who has not been able to find as much weather & time off
in the same period over the last few months I thought I would go over to
Spain with my instructor (Brian) to try to catch up. I'll share the
experience with you.

Brian works for himself at Phoenix Microlights at Watnall, I persuaded him
to join his friend (Mick) from the Litchfield school at a site near
Figueres, on the Costa Brava for a week with me, Wedneday, on arrival, and
after building the two XLs that Mick had carried over we had a good
afternoon, the site was brilliant as was the scenery, That evening Mick went
down with a touch of the Montezumas and so Brian had to look after me and
the students that Mick had, that seriously reduced the time I spent
airbourne over the next two days.

Friday night saw a very heavy rainfall, wet enough to coat the xl wheels
with enough mud to prevent any flights over the weekend. We started to see
that the site was not as good as first impressions had suggested. Once the
mud eased off we had two damaged props from small stones thrown up.

Monday was pretty bumpy, the wind was drifting down over the Pyrennees but I
did manage to fly out and over to the coast. It was a wonderful place to
fly, almost every field looks like it would allow a reasonable landing, if
it had to!

Tuesday, (Last day). an AFI of Micks tested the air and proclaimed it smooth
to 500ft and a bit bumpy above. I wanted to do a few circuits, Brian wanted
so photos, we went for it. The take off roll was longer than normal but
eventually we made a slow ascent into what, above 50ft, was an absolute
nightmare. We were being thrown all over the place, (something the locals
called the three mountains wind) time to take it straight back down, lo and
behold a road roller had moved onto the strip behind us, we had to wait a
few minutes. All we could do was hold on tight and grab what photos we
could, ten minutes later we were back on the ground, total airtime for me
for the week 4.25 hours. It was not as much as I had hoped to get in, but
what I did do had been useful, plus I'd had a bit of a holiday. I can't ask
much more than that.

You are receiving this message as a member of the BMAA Microlight
on-line community.

There are 22 members of the community now, which isn't bad in just a
month - I guess most people have found us through the BMAA web site.
Sadly, we still don't have a lot of discussion going - some of you
must have questions to ask or microlight oriented storys to tell.

Have any of you had chance to read the History section on the BMAA
site - it must evoke memories for those that have been microlighting
since the early days. What type of microlight did you first fly?
What was it like?

Anyway, on with the update. This week most of the changes have
centred on getting the listing of schools and clubs updated. Many
schools now have their own web sites and E Mail links and these can
be accessed from the BMAA site.

There are new technical resources on-line as well. Guy Gratton, the
BMAA's Chief Technical Officer, produces a wide range of Technical
Information Leaflets which can be downloaded directly from the site
in PDF format ready to print out. There are also forms for all the
standard BMAA procedures such as the annual permit to fly etc. A
third section includes data sheets for those building their own
aircraft.

Have you entered the competition yet? There is still time to get
your entry in, by E Mail, to the BMAA. All the answers are on the
site and there is a prize for the best entry.

Finally, a request to anyone that has been impressed by a microlight
oriented web site. We have a list of links from the BMAA site, but
I am sure that there are many other interesting sites we should know
about and include. Rather than just have a list of URLs, it would be
nice to include a brief review of what the site contains and why it
is worth visiting. A couple of paragraphs would suffice.

If you know of any site that should be included, or would like to
review one of those already listed, please E Mail me details.
Obviously, please do not send me reviews of sites in which you have a
personal interest - eg. you developed the site, or it belongs to your
best friend. A little bit of objectivity would be good....

I look forward to getting mail from some of you

Best wishes

Lynn Benson

Hi,
I agree that flying is definately a sickness. Why else
would supposedly intelligent, mature adults strap
themselves into a flimsy kite with a 2-stroke engine
and launch themselves a few thousand feet into the
air?

Hi Fergus, Hi Brian,

It's good to hear talk about aeromodelling! - Although I am not currently
flying a UL, my model antics have always provided good continuity during
those awful times when my pocket is empty and I can't get my backside
into the air! There's a big problem though; once one starts to fly the `big'
models, the `little' models just don't quite give the same satisfaction :-)
I'd be interested to hear what others feel about this? I'm currently enjoying

Hello Fergus,
It's good to see this list coming to life! Sounds like you do a lot of
flying. I've never been to Scotland but from the pics I've seen, it's
really beautiful country. I don't remember if I said where I live???
I'm in Missouri, USA. If I said this before, Sorry I repeated it :-)
I'm interested in all aspects of flying. It's true, I'm mostly into
the Radio Control portion at this time. I hope to be back in an UL / ML
soon as possible but for now it will have to wait. :-(
I have 20 hours logged in a Cessna 182 that belonged to a friend of
mine. We flew a lot and he would let me fly some every time we went
somewhere. I never soloed the 182 but I done several take-off's and
landing's. That was back in 1991 and 1992; before I started RC flying. I
still flew some with him in the 182 until I started flying the UL in
1997. Then, i lost interest in flying the 182 and getting my private
pilot license. I may do that sometime in the future but for now, all I
want is to get another UL to just fly for pure pleasure.

I subscribe to three lists including this one. The Microlight list does seem
to struggle. I guess this is due to it being new and members being a bit
reluctant to 'test the water' as to what might be of interest and what is
going to bore everyone out of their minds. As an aeromodeller it comes as no
surprise that a couple of subscribers to this list are aeromodellers also and
microlighters. The reason is straight forward. There is a group of people who
are interested in aviation in all its aspects, of which aeromodelling and
Microlight flying are but two. It would not surprise me to learn that these
people are also interested in other aspects of flying and aviation generally.
It is my experience that Microlighters and aeromodellers, spotters,
historians, photographers, aviation artists and various others, contribute
greatly, usually on fairly limited budgets, to the advance of popular
aviation.
As well as flying radio control models, I operate a Shadow Microlight,
usually out of Cumbernauld, though at other times I have operated from
Strathaven and Prestwick.
The Shadow Microlight is ideal for this part of the word (Scotland - Central
Belt) for most places are within range. I have visited Dundee, Oban (Connel),
Perth, Eshot, Kirkbride, Braco, Strathaven, Prestwick, Glenrothes, Portmoak,
Errol, and various other 'private' strips which I am not allowed to mention.
My ambition is to fly to the PFA Rally at Cranfield. The weather (only an
excuse), when trying to get away from Scotland can be iffy, the bigger
problem is knowing if you are going to be able to get back. While I ponder
these problems, frequently I meet participants of the 'Round Britain Rally'
who cover these distances-plus — no problem within the same day. I know it is
all down to an attitude of mind and being positive - If anyone in considering
a trip to Scotland and want to make some enquiries then do not hesitate to
e-mail me.

Hi Chris,
I too started the RC flying and then moved into the UL flying. Theres
nothing quite like actually flying in a machine that resembles a lawn
chair with wings.
I'm in the process of building another RC plane now. Hopefully I'll
have it flying this spring. It's a simple trainer type. I'm going to use
it to teach my wife and a couple of friends to fly the RC planes.
I've not flown an ultralite in about a year. I moved halfway across the
country and had to leave the UL with my partner ( the original owner). I
hope to buy another one here in a year or two. I shure do miss flying!

Hi Brian, Welcome to the list.
Many of the UL pilots I know have progressed from
flying RC planes to flying UL / ML aircraft (including
myself). Admittedly my dedication to RC planes has
suffered recently now I have the bigger toys to play
with ;o) I'm still convinced that it's easier to fly
the real thing than to fly a model as you have a
proper sense of perspective when sitting in the
cockpit. That said, I'd still rather suffer an engine
failure in a model!

  Hi list
I've joined this list to "talk" with people who have similar interests
as I. I'll start by telling you a little about myself...
My name is Brian and I'm originally from Tn. and now reside in Mo.
(USA). I'm into flying ultralite aircraft (Quicksilver MX) and radio
control airplanes. I have been flying UL's since 1997 and building and
flying RC's since 1993.
I hope I'm not boring you too much so far....

Hi all,
It certainly has been very quiet on this list so
either there are not many subscribers yet or everyone
is still in 'lurk' mode waiting for someone else to
make the first move.
Anyway, I'm a 3-axis pilot and gained my license in
December '99 so more experience is definately needed.
I fly from Ince Blundell airfield (north of Liverpool)
and would like to hear from any other 3-axis pilots
with stories to tell.
Let's get a bit of chit-chat going here!

Cheers,
Chris.

You are receiving this mail because you have joined the BMAA's
Microlights E Mail community.

My name is Lynn Benson and I established this community in order to
enable everyone interested in microlights to take part in discussion
on the topic. While quite a number of people have now joined the
community, there hasn't been much to discuss yet!

I thought I would write both to introduce myself, and to tell you
about recent updates to the BMAA web site located at

www.bmaa.org

Firstly, have you entered the competition yet? The closing date has
been extended until the end of the month. All you have to do is
answer a few questions on microlights, and all the answers can be
found on the site. Why not have a go - there is a great prize from
the BMAA for the winner!!

If you visit the Technical pages on the web site you will find lots
of forms and TILs ready for you to download and print off using Adobe
Acrobat. New files are added to this section on a regular basis, so
it is worth checking out at least once a month.

There is also a BMAA screensaver for you to download. This includes
images of some very early microlights - it might also help you to
answer some of the competition questions....

Each week the What's New page (linked from the entry page) is
updated, to let you know what has been added. If you make this your
first port of call you will find links included to most new content.

I will write to the group if major changes are made. Extracts from
the latest magazine will be added this weekend.

Best wishes and happy new year,

Lynn Benson

Mick,

From memory each written exam is valid for a 9 month period. You will need to
have obtained your licence to stop the clock on any written exam.

You also can't go solo without having passed the aviation law so that's probably
the best one to start with. If, as in my case, the weather did not allow me to
complete the minimum number of hours to obtain an unrestricted licence I applied
instead for the restricted to prevent my written exam passes expiring. When the
weather improved I completed the necessary training to upgrade the licence to an
unristricteded licence.

For more info see the bmaa web site at:

http://www.avnet.co.uk/bmaa/

Hope this helps

Regards

Matt

Can any one explain the order of written exams for the license?
IE: Can I take any of them in any order and can I take any of them before I
start my flying training. I intend to start flying in March.
I have studied Aircraft aerodynamics and the theory of flight whilst in
the RAF I am an ex Aircraft Electrician with 8 years of work behind me on
Aircraft.

AFIK
You can take them in any order and at any time. My Instructor used the
revision, and the actual exams as a way of filling the time when the weather
was un-flyable, and as there were 3 of us all at about the same stage of
'readiness' he gave each of us a different paper each time.
I seem to remember that they were valid for some time after they were taken
i.e. you had to complete the rest of your training (pass GFT) within a
specific maximum period of time.

Cheers,
Nige.

hi to all newcomers to this latest service via Europage for the BMAA.

we have had lots of interest from people wishing to advertise on the bmaa web
site and i feel that if the members want it, we should provide it. tell me your
views by replying to this message.

I close this with a thank you to all those who re-elected me to council, be
assured that I will continue (subject to the next council meeting) to look after
your interests with special attention to my personal responsibilities for
publications i.e. the mag and the web site. In saying that I have to admit that
all the real hard work is provided by Dave Bremner and Lynn Benson respectively,
thanks to you both for making my job that much easier.

Best Regards to you and yours and all the best for continued safe flying and all
the very best that the new century has to offer.
