A Question About Aeroplane Testing (If it's not out of place!)   Topic List   < Prev Topic  |  Next Topic >
Reply < Prev Message  |
I've seen wings on test rigs in pics (Whittaker I think) all loaded
up with concrete blocks, on trestles. I have a couple of questions
if the techies are in the mood:

The positioning of the trestles surely affects the test? (If you put
the test load above the trestles only, you won't prove much) If so,
should support only be at the very tip of the wing?

How is the load distributed?

How much deflection is allowed?

Do testers stop at the +6g (if the correct figure), or are they
compelled to test ultimate strength?

Are wings tested attached to the fuselage, or individually?

Do other bits get tested this way? Tail, fuselage etc?

Finally, can the clever clogs doe all this with really hard sums?

Clearly I'm not busy enough on a Sunday night!

Cheers,

Colin

To be honest, no I didn't - although there's clearly a certain designer and authority who have had a bit of a recent argument on the subject. I've been on the...

Not always. For instance the rudder pedal loads are in my opinion too low. No clever mathematical principle involved - just practical experience that al...

You can if you're only considering the wing, but you also need to consider the loads upon the fuselage *because* of the wing loads. G² ... 4g ... simulating ...
