Nels it sounds like you are talking about a tabernacle that passes through the deck or cabin top. If so, you make it so the deck passes between the two

I doubt this could ever be made strong enough to hold an unstayed mast.

I did notice it was in the news letter, It made my day! I was thinking of making them relatively small and easy to plug but perhaps thats not a good plan.
