The Miami Wreck Exploration Project was founded by Don Scholen in 1990, with the objective of exploring all the wrecks in Dade county that lie below 130ft.
In 2002, Joel Svendsen ("Jody") took on the task of recruiting, and became project director in 2003. Jody made the use of DIR equipment and procedures mandatory, and strongly encouraged GUE training for all of its members. The first project under his leadership was to visit all of the wrecks in Miami lying between 130 and 170FT.
Divers must provide their own gas, equipment, and training, but boat trips are free.
We are currently looking for divers which hold Tri-Mix certification good to at least 170FT. While GUE certification is preferred, any agency certification is permitted so long as the divers agree to dive to GUE standards, which mandate the use of DIR equipment and procedures. Go to www.gue.com for details.
If you are interested in joining us and fall into one of the above three categories, please email svendsenjoel@yahoo.com with a summary of your dive certification and boat driving experience (if any) and we will discuss how we can work together.
