I have a new website dedicated to the DIY speaker builder. I am limited on how much information I can give you here at Yahoo about my builds, trials and errors, and etc. My new site will give better details, resources for parts, tips, distributors, and much more. Please vist my new site at www.SpeakerHobby.com.
I first built the mains and center speaker in '95 using Radio Shack drivers with a shelf-stock 3-way crossover. Later, I wanted to improve them, so I bought several books, and spent hundreds of hours on the web learning more about the high-end speaker systems and their drivers!
I learned about the hand built Lambda woofers, and bought four of the 12" TDS models, and started there. My other drivers come from Denmark, France, China, and Israel, all working well together with very extensive crossover building, testing, and re-building.
After the 2 mains and center speaker were finished I started on a great subwoofer. After 4 rebuilds with different drivers and configurations, I ended up with a 2-15" active and 4-15" passive radiator subwoofer, driven by a QSC 1450 amplifier. I've finished building a second one for dual co-located sub setup with each sub being driven with their own amp. Music DVD's are my favorite.
I have added a description with each photo on this site, and I will answer all emails.
If you may be on a budget or time constraint, I would advise the first time DIY speaker builder to buy a kit or set of plans that have been tested and proven. There is a lot of labor, materials, and money involved when you have to rebuild several times, for a newly designed speaker.
