Hi Andy

Its a while since I posted here – and I was pleased to see Steve's mildly
provocative post of 12th December was received in the constructive manner that
he surely intended it.

you write:

<<There doesn't seem to be a message counter as there is on the Everycountry
site, but it's my impression that we are often in single digits monthly with
many of those offering some kind of junk for sale>>

Yes – across all the coin groups I am signed into there seems to me to have been
a very marked drop in volume, and general standard of mails coming in, for many
months now.

I do not contribute to groups which have an open archive policy – in part
because I do not like to see google taking my comments out of context and
plastering them all over the internet. I mentioned this before (under a
previous moderator I suspect), but if there is now a will here to follow the
lead of ICG etc, and close to archive of MCG (making it members only), I would
be pleased to take part again.

best wishes to all

To publish in an European numismatic journal is a very good idea.
I can arrange this in the next issue of the Bulletin du Cercle d'Etudes
Numismatiques (Brussels).
They are collecting the papers right now for the December issue. I think that
there is no problem to publish in English.

If you are ok, just send me a mail to my own email, I will call at night (in few
hours here) to see what can be done.

Best

Georges

Dear Steve,

I am another who doesn't receive the Celator, but this isn't exceptional for
medievalists. I did view the article briefly in a friend's copy, however, and
would request an ecopy from you so that I can actually study it and send in a

I am also glad to see that the Medievalcoins message traffic has picked up a

Tony Merson is correct, and I did consider submitting the article to one of the
scholarly journals but wanted to get it in print sooner partly because a number
of the Rouen deniers of the type were currently on the market but attributed
according to Dumas's queried suggestion. Since submitting my article, William
Hyder kindly scanned some pertinent pages and plates from the hoard report. I
had a brief panic attack when I saw that Dumas had illustrated the St.Philbert
denier that displayed the Lothaire insignia and legend. In her text, the legend
on that coin was defectively given. The letter "G" was omitted from a key part
of the legend recording INSINE instead of INSIGNE that is actually on the coin.
If that was only a typographical error, I don't understand how she overlooked
what was to me an obvious conclusion. If the fault was a transcription error
then an opportunity was missed.

Another factor in my decision is my age. Although I am able to work 5 days a
week in a somewhat high pressure office, I am 70 years old, and who knows....? I
have taken the precaution of emailing scans of the article to a number of
people. One of them, Pierre Crinon, has offered to find a copy of the hoard
report for me.

For those that haven't seen the article the deniers given by Dumas to Archbishop
Hugues were actually recording an alliance between Duke Richard I and the
Carolingian King Lothaire.

Hi all,

I think Celator has very limited circulation here. I don't see it and I don't
know any UK recipient except possibly British Museum. Don't think the joint
library of the British and Royal Numismatic Societies receive it.

Any serious contribution should perhaps be published in a French version in the

My Ebay seller profile is at:

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZpetronius_ii

For tonight, ending in less than four hours, I've relisted my bargain threepence
of Elizabeth I. By all rights, this medium-grade specimen should have sold first
time out, but for some reason it didn't. Despite extensive wear, this one is
well-preserved enough to be deeply evocative of its time and place. As before,
this coin is getting some attention, but no bids yet, so I do hope you'll take a
look at this one. I'd really HATE to see the hammer come down on this one a
second time without a sale.
