Well said Krishnan Kandasamy, you are right on the dot. Unless the
common people take charge of the country, nothing can/should be
expected.
The campaign "India can be different, if we are not indifferent" by
Humanist Movement (http://humanistmovement.org) was done precisely for
this point to reach home to people.
The response from hundreds of organisations and thousands of people
across the country has shown that people are actually interested.
Initially, they seem to be looking-out for some 'leader' to arise form
somewhere and deliver the positive results. But, when we work a little
with people (explaining the issues and understanding their concerns and
showing them an organisation with 'their' very own participation can be
formed and developed and they can take charge), we find them to be very
much interested and they begin participating with immense enthusiasm and
positiveness.
As a result of this campaign, we have started our activities in more
then 250 villages, towns, cities including the metros and a grass-root
level organization with "actual day-to-day" participation of thousands
of people is taking shape.
The process, when seen against the urgency of solution required, does
look slow, but there seems to be no other way out. It should have
geometric effects and the coming months will show the results that will
then begin to demonstrate themselves on various issues.
Hundreds of people participating in their local places with a small
looking issue of a self-help saving scheme have shown that in a couple
of year's time, they are able to free themselves from the clutches of
money-lenders - a task that could not be done even by the reaching of
banks to the villages.
Similarily, many other small-looking campaigns have shown to people that
if they begin participating in the issues that concern their life and of
those who are around them, they can not only solve many issues, but also
build an environment, where violence has no existence and there are no
discriminations have no place (Because the activities of the Humanist
Movement are based on two main points : Non-violence and
Non-discrimination).
Whether in UP, Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra,
Orissa, Kerala or Karnataka or elsewhere) the problems that people face
are very much similar (violence, discriminations, unemployment, poverty,
illiteracy, lack of health facilities, etc.) and their response to the
proposal of Humanization (by taking charge of their life, of their
society) is also very much similar.
The understanding & response of people whether thet are
formally-illiterate tribals is no different from that of the
formally-educated people of metros's universities - only the language
and expression is different.
We have absolutely no doubt that "India can be different, if we are not
indifferent"
With more and more people participating together (based on non-vioelnce
and non-discrimination as the guiding principals), things will surely be
able to take a direction a new direction that the human being needs to
take.

No only in India, the issues (it may be strange for some people) are not
very different in most of the countries around the world. A similar
effort around the world by the members of Humanist Movement
(http://hmonline.org) shows a similar response from countries of 5
continents, as different as Ivory-coast and Iceland, Russia and
Australia.
